Whispers of History in Meknes

Today, Jan and I immersed ourselves in the vibrant heart of Meknes, a city that whispers tales of sultans and ancient empires. It was a day of sensory delights, from the bustling energy of a historic square to the solemn grandeur of ancient granaries. Each corner we turned revealed a new facet of Morocco's rich tapestry, leaving us with memories to cherish.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Roman City. It's always a delight to start the day with traditional Moroccan fare. The fresh bread, accompanied by olives, cheese, and a steaming pot of mint tea, set the perfect tone for our explorations. I find that these simple, authentic meals often provide the most profound connection to the local culture. It reminded me of the breakfasts back home in Ha'il, where family gatherings always revolved around sharing food and stories.

Our first stop was Lahdim Square. The square was alive with activity, a vibrant tapestry of sights, sounds, and smells. Snake charmers played their mesmerizing tunes, drawing curious onlookers. Vendors hawked their wares, their voices adding to the symphony of the marketplace. We wandered through the stalls, admiring the colorful displays of spices, textiles, and handicrafts. The energy of the square was infectious, pulling us into the rhythm of daily life in Meknes.

In the heart of Meknes, history isn't just something you read about; it's something you feel, taste, and breathe.

As we strolled through Lahdim Square, I couldn't help but notice the echoes of Marrakech's Jemaa el-Fnaa, though Meknes offered a more intimate, less overwhelming experience. The square was framed by grand gates and arches, remnants of a glorious past. Jan, with his keen eye for detail, pointed out the intricate tilework and the impressive architecture, remnants of a bygone era. He was in his element, drawing parallels to historical engineering feats he discusses with his students at Delft University of Technology. The square was undergoing some renovations, but even the scaffolding couldn't diminish its charm. It was fascinating to observe the blend of old and new, as modern construction techniques were used to preserve the ancient structures.

After soaking in the lively atmosphere of Lahdim Square, we ventured to Heri es-Souani, a site that once served as a royal granary and stables. The sheer scale of the structure was awe-inspiring. Built in the 18th century by Sultan Moulay Ismail, it was designed to store vast quantities of grain and house thousands of horses. As we walked through the massive arched halls, I tried to imagine the bustling activity that once filled these spaces. The granaries were ingeniously designed with thick walls and a network of underground water channels to keep the interior cool and preserve the grain.

Jan was particularly impressed by the engineering of the site. He marveled at the way the Sultan's architects had used the available resources to create such a functional and impressive structure. As we explored further, we came across the ruins of the stables, where it was said that 12,000 horses were once housed. It was hard to believe that such a vast number of animals could be accommodated in one place. The scale of Moulay Ismail's ambition was truly staggering. It reminded me of the stories of ancient caravans crossing the Arabian Desert, their camels laden with precious goods. Just as those caravans sustained life and trade, Heri es-Souani was designed to sustain an entire empire.

For lunch, we found ourselves at Volubilis, a restaurant conveniently located near the historical site of the same name. Though the name evoked images of Roman ruins, the restaurant offered a delightful array of Moroccan dishes. We shared a tagine, savoring the rich flavors of slow-cooked meat, vegetables, and aromatic spices. It was the perfect way to refuel after our morning of exploration. The restaurant was bustling with tourists and locals alike, creating a lively and convivial atmosphere. I always enjoy these moments of cultural exchange, where people from different backgrounds come together to share a meal and a common experience.

In the late afternoon, we sought refuge from the heat at LA TERRASSE, a charming bar that offered stunning views of the city. Sipping on refreshing mint tea, we watched as the sun began its descent, casting a golden glow over the landscape. It was a moment of tranquility, a chance to reflect on the day's adventures. The bar was a popular spot for both locals and tourists, and we struck up a conversation with a friendly couple from France. We exchanged travel stories and recommendations, bonding over our shared love of exploration. It's moments like these that make traveling so rewarding, the unexpected connections that transcend borders and cultures.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Cafe restaurant ain zwawk for dinner. The restaurant was tucked away in a quiet corner of the city, offering a more intimate and authentic dining experience. We feasted on a delicious array of Moroccan specialties, from flavorful couscous to succulent grilled meats. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the staff treated us like family. It felt like we were dining in someone's home, sharing a meal with loved ones. These are the experiences I cherish most, the moments that allow me to connect with the local culture on a deeper level.
