Exploring the Historic Charms of Moulay Idriss, Morocco
Day 4: Spiritual Echoes and Culinary Delights in Moulay Idriss
Exploring the sacred sites and savoring the flavors of Moulay Idriss, a day filled with cultural immersion and delightful discoveries.
A Day of Devotion and Discovery
Today in Moulay Idriss felt like stepping back in time, a journey into the heart of Moroccan spirituality and culture. From the serene Mausoleum to the bustling local cafe, every moment was a rich tapestry of experiences. It’s days like these that remind me why Jan and I love to travel together, sharing in the beauty and history of places unknown.
Our day began with a traditional Moroccan breakfast at SCORPION HOUSE. Perched high on a hill, the views were breathtaking, stretching across the holy town. I remember Mike Richardson, the owner, telling us the story behind the name – something about scorpions warding off evil. It was a delightful start, with an array of pastries, mint tea, and the warm morning sun kissing our faces. It was a climb up those narrow medina streets, more staircases than walkways, but the views made the effort worthwhile.

After breakfast, we ventured to the Mausoleum of al-Hadi ben Issa, a place of profound spiritual significance. As a cultural liaison, I found myself deeply moved by the reverence and respect that permeated the air. The mausoleum is not just a tomb; it's a complex that includes a zawiya, a mosque, and the final resting place of Mohammed al-Hadi ben Issa, the founder of the Issawiyya Sufi order. The intricate details of the architecture spoke volumes of the rich history and devotion of the people. Jan, ever the engineer, was fascinated by the structural elements and the way the building has been maintained over the centuries.

I recall reading about Mohammed al-Hadi ben Issa, a descendant of Idris I of Morocco, spending his childhood as an orphan after his father and brothers were killed fighting the Portuguese. His journey to becoming a Sufi scholar and eventually founding his own order is truly inspiring. It's a reminder that even in the face of adversity, one can rise to become a beacon of hope and spirituality for others.
The beauty of a culture lies not just in its monuments, but in the spirit of its people.
Next on our itinerary was a visit to Kasabah Senhaji. This kasbah offered a glimpse into the traditional Moroccan way of life. The architecture was stunning, and the peaceful atmosphere was a welcome respite from the bustling streets. We wandered through the courtyards, admiring the intricate tile work and the lush gardens. I imagined families gathering here, sharing stories and meals, their lives intertwined with the history of this ancient place. Kasabah Senhaji is set 3.7 km from Volubilis. I found myself appreciating the simple yet elegant design, a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the local artisans.

For lunch, we decided to try La Baraka, a restaurant known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. The aroma of spices filled the air as we stepped inside, and the menu was a delightful array of traditional dishes. We opted for the tagine, a slow-cooked stew with tender meat and vegetables, and couscous, fluffy and flavorful. It was a true culinary delight, a symphony of tastes that danced on my palate. Jan, always the adventurous eater, tried a local specialty, and declared it a resounding success.

As we savored our meal, we observed the locals around us, families and friends sharing laughter and stories. It struck me how food is such an integral part of Moroccan culture, a way to connect and celebrate life. It reminded me of the many intercultural dinners I've hosted in Delft, where food becomes a bridge between different cultures and traditions.
In the late afternoon, we sought refuge from the heat at Cafe machhour, a local bar where we sipped on refreshing mint tea. The atmosphere was lively, with locals engaged in animated conversations and the sounds of traditional music filling the air. It was a perfect opportunity to soak in the local culture and observe the rhythms of daily life. I found myself chatting with a local artisan, learning about his craft and the challenges he faces in preserving traditional techniques in a modern world.

For our final meal of the day, we dined at Al Andaloussiya Diyafa, a restaurant that promised panoramic views of Volubilis and the surrounding areas. As the sun began to set, the sky was painted with hues of orange and purple, casting a magical glow over the landscape. The food was delicious, a mix of traditional Moroccan dishes with a modern twist. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day, a moment to reflect on the beauty and richness of Moulay Idriss.

As we prepare for tomorrow, our itinerary includes visits to Le portail de Moulay Ismaïl and Dar El-Makhzen in Meknes. I am excited to explore these historical sites and delve deeper into the history and culture of this fascinating region. We plan to start our day with breakfast at Volubilis, followed by lunch at Restaurant Moulay Idriss, and dinner at Cafe restaurant ain zwawk. And of course, we'll be sure to visit LA TERRASSE for a refreshing drink in the evening.
Reflecting on our experiences today, I am reminded of the importance of cultural exchange and understanding. As a cultural liaison, I believe that travel is one of the most powerful tools we have to bridge divides and foster empathy. By immersing ourselves in different cultures, we gain a deeper appreciation for the richness and diversity of the human experience. It is through these experiences that we can build a more connected and compassionate world.
I am grateful for the opportunity to share these moments with Jan, my partner in life and travel. His curiosity and open-mindedness inspire me to see the world with fresh eyes, and his love and support make every journey even more special. As we continue our exploration of Morocco, I am filled with anticipation for the adventures that lie ahead, and the lessons we will learn along the way.
As the day comes to a close, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences we've had and the people we've met. Moulay Idriss has touched my heart in a profound way, and I will carry its beauty and spirit with me always.
