Finding Peace in Moulay Idriss
Today was a day of simple pleasures and profound beauty in the Moulay Idriss region. Jan and I embraced the serene atmosphere, exploring natural parks, enjoying local cuisine, and capturing breathtaking views. It's these moments of quiet discovery that truly enrich the soul.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Haytam. The aroma of freshly baked bread and mint tea filled the air as we settled into our seats. I opted for a traditional tagine, while Jan chose the couscous. The flavors were rich and authentic, a perfect start to our day.
The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning you didn't even think to ask.
After breakfast, we set out to explore the Bab Rmila Natural Park. The drive itself was scenic, with rolling hills and olive groves stretching as far as the eye could see. As we approached the park, the air grew fresher, carrying the scent of pine and eucalyptus.

Bab Rmila Natural Park was a haven of tranquility. The well-marked trails invited us to wander deeper into its embrace. We strolled hand in hand, marveling at the lush greenery and diverse flora. Jan, ever the nature enthusiast, pointed out various bird species, his eyes sparkling with excitement. I made a mental note to buy him a better pair of binoculars; he’d forgotten his at home, and I really should have reminded him. We even spotted a few playful monkeys swinging through the trees, their antics bringing a smile to our faces. The park truly felt like a world away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
We packed a picnic, as suggested, and found a secluded spot beneath a sprawling oak tree. The sunlight dappled through the leaves, creating a magical ambiance. We savored our lunch of local cheeses, olives, and fresh bread, accompanied by the gentle symphony of birdsong. It was a moment of pure bliss, a reminder of the simple joys in life.
Leaving the park, we decided to immerse ourselves further in the local culture with a visit to زيارة باب مولاي إدريس, a local shop. The shop was a treasure trove of traditional Moroccan crafts, from handwoven textiles to intricate pottery. I was particularly drawn to a beautiful ceramic tagine, its vibrant colors reflecting the warmth of the Moroccan sun. Jan, on the other hand, admired a collection of intricately carved wooden boxes. We ended up buying a few souvenirs, tokens of our time in this enchanting region.
For lunch, we chose the Roman City restaurant. The name intrigued us, and we were eager to experience its culinary offerings. The restaurant was charming, with a cozy ambiance and friendly staff. Jan and I shared a vegetable tagine and a refreshing salad. The flavors were exquisite, a testament to the chef's skill and passion. As we savored our meal, we couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience such authentic Moroccan cuisine.
In the late afternoon, we made our way to the Small Terasse, seeking a panoramic view of the mosque and the surrounding landscape. The terrace was indeed small, but the view was anything but. The mosque stood majestically against the backdrop of rolling hills, its intricate architecture a testament to the region's rich cultural heritage. The setting sun cast a golden glow over the scene, creating a breathtaking spectacle. I snapped a few photos, hoping to capture the magic of the moment.

As the day drew to a close, we indulged in a delightful dinner at Grillade Albanna. The restaurant was known for its grilled meats, and we were eager to sample its offerings. We ordered a mixed grill, savoring the succulent flavors of lamb, chicken, and beef. The meat was perfectly seasoned and grilled to perfection, a true culinary delight. The atmosphere was lively, with locals and tourists alike sharing stories and laughter. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day.
Reflecting on our experiences, I am struck by the beauty and serenity of the Moulay Idriss region. The Bab Rmila Natural Park offered a tranquil escape into nature, while the local shops provided a glimpse into the region's rich cultural heritage. The restaurants we visited tantalized our taste buds with authentic Moroccan cuisine, and the Small Terasse offered a breathtaking panoramic view. It was a day of simple pleasures and profound discoveries, a reminder of the beauty that lies in the heart of Morocco.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Mausoleum of al-Hadi ben Issa and Kasabah Senhaji, further immersing ourselves in the history and culture of this fascinating region. We'll also try out some new restaurants – SCORPION HOUSE for breakfast, La Baraka for lunch, and Al Andaloussiya Diyafa for dinner. I am particularly excited about visiting Cafe machhour, a local bar, to experience the nightlife here. I am eager to see what new adventures await us. Jan is already looking forward to photographing the Mausoleum; he's read about its stunning architecture.
As I sit here, penning down my thoughts, I am filled with gratitude for this incredible journey. Morocco has a way of captivating the soul, of leaving an indelible mark on the heart. I am eager to continue exploring its hidden gems, to uncover its secrets, and to share its beauty with the world. And I am so happy to be doing it with Jan, my partner in life and adventure.
Travel is more than seeing the sights; it is about experiencing the soul of a place and connecting with its people.
The warmth of the Moroccan people, the beauty of the landscape, and the richness of the culture have all combined to create an unforgettable experience. As we prepare for our next adventure, I am filled with anticipation, eager to see what wonders await us in this magical land. I am also glad I packed my headscarf; I find myself using it more and more, not just for practical reasons but as a sign of respect for the local culture. I think Layla would be proud of me.
Before drifting off to sleep, I realize that I need to buy a local SIM card tomorrow. It would make keeping in touch with Layla and the rest of our family so much easier. And I should definitely remember my sunglasses; the Moroccan sun can be quite intense. These little things can make a big difference in our travel experience, ensuring that we are comfortable, connected, and fully able to appreciate the beauty around us. I'll make sure to add them to my list for tomorrow. Good night from Moulay Idriss!
