Whispers of Wisdom and Wonder

Today, I embarked on a journey through Kyoto that felt like stepping into a living painting. The city unfolded with each step, revealing layers of history, spirituality, and natural beauty that resonated deeply within me. It was a day of quiet contemplation, a solo exploration that allowed me to fully immerse myself in the serene atmosphere of Kyoto.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at MUGHAL Indian Restaurant & Bar. It might seem odd to start a day of Japanese cultural immersion with Indian cuisine, but after several days of traditional fare, the familiar spices were a welcome change. The Mughal restaurant is tucked away near the Kamo River, and I found the prawn pakora quite pleasant, the prawns nicely cooked. It was a very pleasant meal, and the staff was very attentive. It reminded me of some of the Indian restaurants in Delft, where Jan and I sometimes go for a quick bite after a long day at the university. It was a delightful start to the day, fueling me for the explorations ahead.

With a satisfied stomach, I set out for the famed Philosopher's Path. The air was crisp, carrying the promise of spring, though the cherry blossoms were still holding back their grand display. Despite the lack of full bloom, the path exuded a tranquil charm, with the gentle stream whispering stories of centuries past. Walking along the canal, I understood why this route was favored by the philosopher Nishida Kitaro for his meditations. The quietude was profound, broken only by the occasional rustling of leaves and the soft murmur of fellow travelers.

The Philosopher's Path, they say, is best visited when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. But even without the pink canopy, the walk was incredibly peaceful. I took my time, observing the small details – the moss-covered stones, the intricate patterns in the water, the quaint little shops and cafes that lined the way. It was a meditative experience, allowing me to clear my mind and appreciate the simple beauty of nature.

As I strolled, I pondered the words of Nishida Kitaro, a philosopher who sought to bridge Eastern and Western thought. His walks along this very path must have been filled with profound reflections, much like my own today. It's fascinating to think that such a simple, natural setting could inspire such deep contemplation. I found myself considering the parallels between his search for understanding and my own journey through life, seeking to reconcile my Saudi Arabian heritage with my life in the Netherlands. It’s a constant balancing act, a dance between tradition and modernity, much like the city of Kyoto itself.

The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart.

From the Philosopher's Path, I made my way to Heian Shrine, a striking contrast to the natural serenity I had just experienced. The shrine's vibrant vermilion architecture was a feast for the eyes, a bold statement of Kyoto's imperial history. Built to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of Kyoto's founding, the shrine pays homage to Emperor Kanmu and Emperor Komei, the first and last emperors to rule from Kyoto's original palace. The massive torii gate at the entrance was simply awe-inspiring, a testament to the grandeur of the past.

The shrine was built in 1895 to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of Kyoto's establishment as the capital. It's dedicated to Emperor Kanmu, who moved the capital to Kyoto, and Emperor Komei, the last emperor to rule from Kyoto before the capital moved to Tokyo. The main buildings are a scaled-down replica of the original Imperial Palace, giving visitors a sense of the city's former glory.

I wandered through the spacious courtyard, admiring the intricate details of the buildings and the meticulous craftsmanship that went into their construction. The Heian Shrine gardens are especially beautiful and I was enveloped in a canopy of cherry blossoms.. The gardens, designed between 1895 and 1981, feature ponds, bridges, and meticulously manicured landscapes. I spent a good hour simply wandering through the gardens, taking in the beauty and tranquility of the surroundings. It was a perfect spot for reflection, a place to appreciate the artistry and dedication that went into creating such a serene and harmonious space.

As I explored, I couldn't help but think of the cultural significance of this place. It's not just a beautiful shrine; it's a symbol of Kyoto's rich history and its enduring spirit. It's a reminder of the city's imperial past and its commitment to preserving its cultural heritage. I felt a deep sense of connection to the past, a sense of being part of something larger than myself. It's moments like these that make travel so rewarding, that allow me to understand and appreciate the world in a deeper, more meaningful way.

My final stop for the day was Nanzen-ji Temple, a Zen Buddhist temple of immense historical and spiritual importance. The temple complex was vast, encompassing numerous sub-temples, gardens, and even a European-style aqueduct. The Sanmon Gate, a towering structure built in 1628, offered panoramic views of the city, a breathtaking vista that stretched as far as the eye could see. The temple was originally Emperor Kameyama's retirement villa and it includes a temple hall and garden centered around a pond. Nanzen-ji is home to a sanmon (a great gate that holds importance within Japanese Buddhist temples), an exquisite European style canal, and multiple sub-temples, each with its own charm.

Nanzen-ji Temple, founded in the late 13th century, is one of the most important Zen temples in Japan. It's known for its beautiful gardens, its impressive Sanmon Gate, and its unique blend of Japanese and Western architecture. The temple complex is vast, encompassing numerous sub-temples, each with its own distinct character and charm. I spent several hours exploring the grounds, marveling at the intricate details of the buildings and the serene beauty of the gardens.

One of the most striking features of Nanzen-ji is the aqueduct, a brick structure built during the Meiji era to carry water from Lake Biwa to Kyoto. It's a surprising sight in a traditional Japanese temple complex, a testament to the city's embrace of modernity while still honoring its past. I walked along the aqueduct, listening to the sound of the water flowing beneath me, and reflecting on the ingenuity and vision of those who built it.

The gardens at Nanzen-ji are particularly beautiful. They're designed in the traditional Zen style, with meticulously raked gravel, carefully placed stones, and lush greenery. The gardens are meant to inspire contemplation and meditation, and I found myself drawn into their peaceful atmosphere. I sat on a bench, closed my eyes, and simply listened to the sounds of nature – the rustling of leaves, the chirping of birds, the gentle breeze. It was a moment of pure serenity, a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and connect with something deeper and more profound.

As evening approached, I treated myself to a delightful dinner at French Dining Top of Kyoto, located atop the Rihga Royal Hotel. The revolving restaurant offered stunning panoramic views of the city, a perfect backdrop for a sophisticated French meal. It was fascinating to see the city slowly transform from day to night, the lights twinkling like stars against the darkening sky. The food was exquisite, a testament to the chef's skill and creativity. It was a perfect way to end a day of cultural immersion and spiritual exploration.

The restaurant is known for its innovative cuisine, which blends traditional French techniques with local Japanese ingredients. The view from the restaurant is simply breathtaking, offering a 360-degree panorama of the city. It was a perfect way to end a day of cultural immersion and spiritual exploration.

Before heading back to the hotel, I decided to explore Kyoto Porta, the underground shopping area at Kyoto Station. I was hoping to find an adapter, as I had forgotten mine at home, but I also enjoyed browsing the various shops and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere. I also stopped by the Kyoto Star Bar for a nightcap. The bar is known for its skilled bartenders and its extensive selection of cocktails. I ordered a classic gin and tonic and savored the moment, reflecting on the day's experiences. It was a perfect way to end a day of cultural immersion and spiritual exploration.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Nijō Castle, Nishiki Market, and the Kyoto International Manga Museum, a blend of history, culture, and modern art that perfectly encapsulates the spirit of Kyoto. I am particularly looking forward to Nishiki Market and sampling some of the local delicacies. I’ve heard it’s a feast for the senses, and I can’t wait to experience it firsthand.

Kyoto continues to captivate me with its seamless blend of tradition and modernity, its ability to offer both serene reflection and vibrant cultural experiences. It's a city that nourishes the soul and stimulates the mind, a place where I feel both grounded and inspired. As I prepare for my final days here, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this remarkable city and to share my experiences with you. Perhaps Jan and I will return together one day.

I am excited for what tomorrow holds!
