Kyoto's Gentle Embrace: A Farewell to Remember
As my final day in Kyoto unfolded, I found myself drawn to the city's spiritual heart and vibrant culinary scene. It was a day of reflection, exploration, and savoring the last moments of this immersive cultural journey. The crisp March air, still hinting at winter's chill, carried the promise of spring as I set out to embrace the day's adventures.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Hafuu. The restaurant was near Heian Jingu Shrine and offered a fabulous Wagyu beef steak. I opted for their daily lunch special, a delightful Japanese-style Western meal that included a juicy hamburger steak. The restaurant was located in a quiet residential area, which allowed me to enjoy my meal in peace. It was a perfect start to a day filled with exploration and reflection.
The journey of a lifetime is not about the destination, but the experiences and memories created along the way.
Next on my itinerary was the iconic Fushimi Inari Taisha. As I approached the shrine, the seemingly endless path of vibrant orange torii gates winding up Mt. Inari created an awe-inspiring spectacle. Dedicated to Inari, the deity of good harvest and business success, the shrine is a testament to Japan's deep-rooted spiritual traditions. I joined the throngs of visitors, both local and international, as we began our ascent through the tunnel of torii gates. The vermilion color, believed to ward off evil, enveloped me in a sense of protection and reverence.
Explore the stunning Fushimi Inari Taisha, Kyoto's iconic Shinto shrine famous for its thousands of picturesque torii gates and breathtaking mountain views.
The hike to the summit took me through serene forests and past numerous stone altars, each dedicated to various deities. About halfway up, I paused at a small tea stall to savor some inari sushi and kitsune udon, both traditional foods associated with the fox messengers of Inari. Refueled and invigorated, I continued my journey, marveling at the dedication and artistry that went into creating this sacred space. It was fascinating to learn that the shrine was founded in 711 AD, even before Kyoto became Japan's capital, and that emperors often made donations here in ancient times.
After descending from Mt. Inari, I made my way to Higashiyama Jisho-ji, also known as the Silver Pavilion. This Zen temple, officially named Jisho-ji, represents the Higashiyama Culture of the Muromachi period. Originally built as a retirement villa for the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa in the 15th century, it later became a Zen temple after his death. As I wandered through the meticulously designed gardens, I couldn't help but admire the wabi-sabi aesthetic of beauty in imperfection that the Silver Pavilion embodies. The Sea of Silver Sand, a meticulously raked sand garden, and the Kogetsudai, a lunar viewing platform, were particularly captivating. It was a place of tranquility and contemplation, a perfect contrast to the vibrant energy of Fushimi Inari.

From the Silver Pavilion, I strolled to Kodaiji Temple, another gem in Kyoto's Higashiyama district. Established in 1606 by Nene, the widow of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, one of Japan's greatest historical figures, Kodaiji is a testament to the enduring power of love and remembrance. The temple belongs to the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism and features lavishly decorated interiors and stunning gardens. As I explored the main hall, I learned that it was originally covered in lacquer and gold but was rebuilt in a more modest style after a fire. The rock garden, with its vast field of raked gravel representing the ocean, and the tsukiyama-style garden, with its pond, man-made hills, and decorative rocks, were breathtaking.

I discovered that Nene would pray for Hideyoshi in the Kaizando (memorial hall) which now enshrines wooden images of both of them. The Kodaiji Makie lacquerwork, featuring designs of powdered gold and silver set in lacquer, was particularly impressive. It was interesting to learn that Kodaiji Temple showcases exquisite artwork and houses several tea houses designed by the renowned Tea Master Sen no Rikyu. I continued to the hillside behind the temple to visit a mausoleum for Hideyoshi and Nene.
With my spiritual and cultural thirst quenched, it was time to indulge in Kyoto's culinary offerings once more. For lunch, I ventured to Kyoto cuisine Hanasaki Nishikiten, a restaurant near Nishiki Market. The restaurant offered authentic Kyoto cuisine Kaiseki featuring seasonal ingredients. It was a delightful experience, savoring the delicate flavors and artistic presentation of each dish. The restaurant’s ambiance and the attentive service made it a memorable meal.

In the late afternoon, I decided to explore the Sanjo Meiten-gai Shopping Arcade. This historic arcade, dating back to the late 1860s, offered a glimpse into Kyoto's local life. As I strolled through the covered street, I discovered a variety of shops selling traditional crafts, souvenirs, and local goods. I stopped by Kikuichimonji Shop, known for its katana replicas and sword-related accessories, and picked up a small decorative sword as a memento of my trip. It was fascinating to learn about the arcade's history and its role in preserving Kyoto's cultural heritage. The Sanjo Meiten-gai, close to Sanjo Bridge, which marks the end of the Old Tokaido Highway that connected Kyoto to Tokyo, was a fun zone full of very old shops and structures next to modern buildings and boutiques.

As evening approached, I sought refuge in Caamm bar, a cozy establishment known for its impressive selection of whiskies and creative cocktails. I settled into a comfortable seat and ordered a classic highball, savoring the smooth taste and reflecting on my day's adventures. The bar's intimate atmosphere and friendly staff made it the perfect place to unwind and soak in the last moments of my Kyoto experience. I learned that Caamm Bar focuses specifically on whisky, with a healthy selection from Japan and abroad.

For my final dinner in Kyoto, I chose THE SODOH HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO, a restaurant known for its Italian cuisine and elegant setting. The restaurant is in a building built in 1929 by Japanese painter Seihou Takeuchi, and features a beautiful garden. I opted for the vegan set menu, which showcased seasonal ingredients from Kyoto. Each dish was prepared with care and presented with artistic flair. The excellent service and the serene ambiance made it a truly memorable dining experience.

As I savored my last bite, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience Kyoto's rich culture and history. This solo journey had been a transformative experience, filled with moments of awe, reflection, and discovery. Tomorrow, I would be heading back to Delft, carrying with me a treasure trove of memories and a newfound appreciation for the beauty and wisdom of Japan.
As my trip comes to an end, I am reminded of the warmth and hospitality I have experienced throughout my journey. It is the people, the culture, and the traditions that have left an indelible mark on my heart. I hope to return to Japan soon, perhaps with Jan, to share these experiences with him. Until then, I will cherish the memories and continue to share my stories with you, my dear readers.
The weather today was rainy and cold, with the temperature at 45°F (7°C), feeling like 39°F (4°C). The humidity was around 74%. I am glad I had my light jacket with me to keep me warm throughout the day.
