Blue Views and Mountain Highs

Today was a day of contrasts, blending the cultural heart of Chefchaouen with the physical challenge of its surrounding mountains. It was a day that reminded me why I love to travel: the chance to immerse myself in the local culture and challenge myself physically, all while soaking in breathtaking views. I'm excited to share the experiences with you.

Our day started with a delightful breakfast at Toda Creperie & Ice Cream. Sofia was particularly excited, as she had been craving one of their Nutella crepes since we arrived. The ladies who run the place are so warm and welcoming; it’s like visiting family. I opted for a cheese crepe, while Klaus enjoyed a simple croissant with coffee. It's amazing how such a small place can create such a memorable start to the day. It’s the small, authentic experiences like these that I cherish most. The cleanliness was also remarkable; you could tell they took great pride in their little shop.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we set off to explore the Lavadero de la Ciudad. This historic washhouse is a testament to Chefchaouen’s rich cultural heritage. It’s a place where local women have gathered for generations to wash their clothes in the flowing waters. The scene was incredibly serene, with the gentle sounds of water and the vibrant colors of the blue walls creating a calming atmosphere. I couldn't help but think about the stories these walls could tell, the lives that have intersected at this very spot. Sofia was fascinated by the whole process, asking questions about how the women managed to keep their clothes so clean. It was a great opportunity to teach her about the traditions of my homeland. As we strolled around, we saw vendors selling fresh pomegranate and orange juice. I bought a glass of pomegranate juice, the sweet and tangy flavors bursting in my mouth. It was the perfect refreshment for a warm morning.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.

After soaking in the cultural charm of the Lavadero, we decided to embark on a more adventurous activity: hiking to the summit of Jebel El-Kelaa. I had read about the stunning panoramic views from the top, and I was eager to experience them firsthand. Klaus, ever the supportive husband, was immediately on board, while Sofia, surprisingly, was also excited about the challenge. As we started our ascent, the initial incline was gentle, allowing us to warm up our muscles. The trail wound through the outskirts of Chefchaouen, offering glimpses of the blue city below.

The path gradually became steeper, and we found ourselves navigating rocky terrain. I was grateful for my comfortable walking shoes, as the trail was becoming increasingly challenging. Sofia, with her boundless energy, scampered ahead, while Klaus and I took a more measured pace. Along the way, we encountered friendly locals tending to their fields, offering us words of encouragement and smiles. Their warmth and hospitality made the climb even more enjoyable. The views became more spectacular with each step, rewarding our efforts with breathtaking vistas of the Rif Mountains.

As we approached the summit, the trail became a bit tricky, with multiple paths leading in different directions. Fortunately, we spotted blue dots painted on the rocks, guiding us along the correct route. The final stretch was steep and required some scrambling, but the anticipation of reaching the top kept us going. Finally, after a couple of hours of hiking, we reached the summit of Jebel El-Kelaa. The view was absolutely breathtaking. Chefchaouen sprawled below us, a sea of blue nestled amidst the green mountains. The Rif Mountains stretched out in the distance, their peaks shrouded in a light haze. It was a moment of pure awe, a reminder of the beauty and grandeur of nature. We spent a few minutes at the summit, soaking in the view and catching our breath. Sofia was ecstatic, proudly declaring that she had conquered the mountain. I took several photos, wanting to capture the moment and preserve the memory forever.

The descent was just as challenging as the ascent, requiring careful footing and concentration. We took a different path down, offering us fresh perspectives of the region. The sun was beginning to set, casting a golden glow over the landscape. As we made our way back to Chefchaouen, I felt a sense of accomplishment and gratitude. We had challenged ourselves physically and been rewarded with stunning views and unforgettable memories. By the time we got back to our hotel, we were exhausted but exhilarated. After freshening up, we decided to have dinner at Restaurant Lalla Messaouda. I had read about their traditional Moroccan dishes, and I was eager to try them. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, with traditional Moroccan decor and soft lighting. We ordered a variety of dishes, including tagine, couscous, and Moroccan chicken. The food was delicious, bursting with flavors and spices that transported me back to my childhood in Azrou. Sofia particularly enjoyed the lamb tagine, while Klaus raved about the couscous. The service was warm and attentive, making us feel like honored guests.

After dinner, we decided to take a stroll through the medina before calling it a night. The streets were still bustling with activity, with locals and tourists alike enjoying the cool evening air. We stopped by Ben jamaê coffey for a nightcap. The place had a cozy atmosphere. Klaus and I enjoyed a glass of Moroccan mint tea, while Sofia opted for a refreshing juice. We sat outside, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of Chefchaouen. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.

As I reflect on today’s adventures, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and contentment. Chefchaouen has a way of captivating the soul, of drawing you in with its beauty and charm. Tomorrow, we plan to explore Akchour, another natural wonder near Chefchaouen. I’ve heard whispers of stunning waterfalls and lush landscapes, and I’m eager to discover what awaits us. I can’t wait to share those experiences with you as well. Until then, good night from the Blue Pearl!
