Stepping Back in Time and Soaking in the Views

Today was a day of exploring Chefchaouen's historical roots and enjoying its stunning scenery. It’s amazing how much history is packed into this blue city, and I was excited to share it with Klaus and Sofia. We set out to immerse ourselves in the local culture and capture some unforgettable moments.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Restaurant Hamsa. Perched high above the main square, the rooftop terrace offered breathtaking views of the blue pearl city and the Rif Mountains. The decor was beautiful, and the staff were incredibly friendly. I opted for the avocado orange juice, while Klaus enjoyed his usual mint tea, and Sofia devoured a gluten-free chocolate almond cake. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. The kids loved the pastries and cakes.

After breakfast, we made our way to the Kasbah, a historical monument that has been restored several times over the centuries. Built in 1471 by Rachid Ben Ali, it was strategically positioned to safeguard Chefchaouen. As we wandered through its walls, I couldn't help but imagine what life was like back when it served as a residence for governors, a military arsenal, and even a prison. The entrance fee was quite reasonable, and it was free for Sofia, which was a bonus.

The Kasbah is an architectural marvel, showcasing Moroccan defensive design. The views from the top of the towers were incredible, offering a unique perspective of the city square and the Grand Mosque. Inside, we explored the ethnographic museum, which was inaugurated in 1985. It featured a fascinating collection of Moroccan heritage, including musical instruments, pottery, sculptures, and even weapons used to defend the fortress. Sofia was particularly intrigued by the traditional clothing and jewelry, remnants of Berber and Andalusian motifs.

To truly see a place, you must explore its past and embrace its present.

Leaving the Kasbah, we strolled through the vibrant streets of the medina, soaking in the sights and sounds of daily life. The blue-washed walls created a calming ambiance, and every corner seemed to offer a new photo opportunity. We passed by Place Bab Souk, where locals were bargaining for fresh fruits and vegetables. It was a lively scene, and I couldn't resist snapping a few photos.

For lunch, we chose Restaurant populaire, a charming spot known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. Klaus and I shared a vegetable tagine, while Sofia enjoyed some beef and couscous. The flavors were rich and satisfying, and the prices were very reasonable. It's these kinds of unassuming places that offer the most genuine culinary experiences.

In the afternoon, we decided to hike up to the City View Point to get a panoramic view of Chefchaouen. The trail started near Ras El Maa, where we saw some women doing their laundry in the river. The walk took about 15-20 minutes, and although it was uphill, the scenery was worth it.

As we reached the top, we were greeted by a breathtaking vista of the blue city spread out before us. The Spanish Mosque, built in the 1920s, stood proudly on the hill. Sofia was amazed by the view and spent ages taking pictures, while Klaus pointed out various landmarks. I took a moment to simply soak it all in, feeling grateful for the opportunity to share this experience with my family. I remembered my childhood in Azrou and felt a deep connection to my Moroccan roots.

Before dinner, we stopped by Hibart Souvenirs Shop to pick up a few mementos of our trip. The shop was filled with handmade Moroccan crafts, from ceramics to textiles. I found a beautiful blue scarf for my mother, and Sofia chose a small tagine to take back to Bonn. The shop owners were incredibly welcoming, sharing stories about the origins of the items.

For our final meal of the day, we dined at Restaurant paloma, drawn in by its pleasant atmosphere and homey decor. The restaurant is situated in the old part of town, near the Grand Mosque. We enjoyed perfectly cooked tagine, beef, and Moroccan chicken. The portions were generous, and the prices were surprisingly affordable. The staff was patient and friendly, making us feel right at home.

As the day drew to a close, we walked back to Hotel Dar Mounir, our hearts full of memories. Chefchaouen had captivated us with its history, beauty, and charm. I am so happy to share this experience with my family, especially Sofia, who is learning so much about her heritage. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Lavadero de la ciudad and hike to Jebel El-Kelaa Summit for more stunning views. But for tonight, I'm content to savor the moments of today and dream of the blue city.
