A Day of Iconic Views and Harbor Charms

Today was a beautiful blend of history and modern-day charm here in Rhodes. I always find it fascinating how a single day can hold so many different experiences, and today was a testament to that. From exploring ancient windmills to soaking in the lively atmosphere of Mandraki Marina, Rhodes continues to surprise and delight.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Locanda - Demenagas Greek Restaurant. It’s always a treat to start the day with authentic Greek flavors. I opted for some traditional pastries and strong Greek coffee, which gave me the perfect energy boost for the day’s adventures. The ambiance was cozy and inviting, setting a relaxed tone for what was to come. I remember when Jihad and I first moved to Toronto, finding a good Lebanese bakery was one of our first missions – food truly connects us to home, no matter where we are.

After breakfast, we headed straight for the Rhodes Windmills. These iconic structures stand proudly at the entrance of Mandraki Harbor, serving as a majestic reminder of the island's rich history. The windmills date back to the 14th century, built by the Knights Hospitaller to grind grain. Standing there, with the gentle sea breeze and the imposing windmills before me, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe. It’s incredible to think of the centuries of history these stones have witnessed. The windmills are a photographer's dream, and I spent a good amount of time capturing their beauty from different angles.

Next on our itinerary was Mandraki Marina & Port. This bustling harbor is the heart of Rhodes, filled with yachts, fishing boats, and a vibrant energy that’s simply infectious. We strolled along the waterfront, admiring the boats and watching the local fishermen at work. The marina is also home to the Colossus of Rhodes statue. Although the statue itself is long gone, the spot where it once stood is still a significant landmark. We learned that in ancient times, the statue straddled the harbor entrance, a truly impressive sight. The area is steeped in myth and history, making it a captivating place to explore.

For lunch, we chose Restaurant Wonder, and it certainly lived up to its name. I savored fresh seafood, grilled to perfection, while enjoying panoramic views of the harbor. It's moments like these, sharing a meal with friends in such a beautiful setting, that make traveling so rewarding. The flavors of the Mediterranean are always a welcome treat, and this meal was no exception.

As the afternoon progressed, we decided to explore more of Mandraki Marina. We stumbled upon several charming cafes and shops, each with its own unique character. I picked up a few souvenirs to take back home to Lina, little trinkets to remind her of our adventures in Rhodes. I remember when Lina was learning about ancient civilizations in school, she was particularly fascinated by the Colossus of Rhodes. I can't wait to show her the pictures and tell her all about it.

Before dinner, we stopped by Alter Ego Summer for a refreshing drink. This bar has a laid-back atmosphere and is a perfect spot to unwind after a day of sightseeing. Sipping on a cocktail while watching the sunset over the Aegean Sea was the perfect way to relax. The bar had a great selection of drinks, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. It felt like a true vacation moment, savoring the beauty of the island with good company.

Dinner was at Louis Restaurant, which came highly recommended. The restaurant is known for its authentic Greek cuisine and warm hospitality. We indulged in a variety of local dishes, each bursting with flavor. The highlight of the meal was the fresh seafood, which was incredibly delicious. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting ambiance, making it a perfect place to end the day. It’s always a pleasure to discover hidden culinary gems like this one. It was interesting to learn that Louis Restaurant doesn't advertise, but relies on word of mouth, which is always a good sign.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're planning to explore Faliraki Beach - Galazio Beach and Viewpoint Anthony Quinn Bay. I’ve heard so much about the stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters, and I can’t wait to experience them firsthand. We'll also be visiting OhDeer.me for some shopping. I am hoping to find something special for Lina, maybe a handmade toy or a piece of local art. And of course, we'll be trying out some new restaurants, including Mezzaluna for breakfast, Ta Kardasia for lunch, and Capricci Italian Restaurant for dinner. I am excited to see what culinary delights tomorrow will bring.

Tonight, as I reflect on the day, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and history of Rhodes. The island has a way of captivating your heart and leaving you with memories that will last a lifetime. Traveling with friends makes these experiences even more special, as we share laughter, stories, and unforgettable moments together. I am already looking forward to another day of exploration and discovery tomorrow.
