Oasis Dreams and Riad Revelations

Today was a day of unexpected delights and serene escapes, a true reflection of Taroudant's hidden charms. From tranquil riads to refreshing oases, every moment was filled with the magic of Morocco. It's days like these that make me so grateful for this journey, and eager to share every discovery with you.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Snack Itrane. Jan and I shared some traditional Moroccan pastries and mint tea, soaking in the morning sun before the day’s adventures began. It was the perfect way to fuel up for exploring more of Taroudant. I am always amazed by how such simple moments – a shared pastry, a warm drink – can create such lasting memories. It reminded me of mornings back in Houndé, sharing breakfast with my family before heading to school. Those memories are a constant source of comfort, especially when I’m far from home.

Our first stop was DarZahia, a guesthouse nestled within the city walls. The moment we stepped inside, we were transported to a haven of peace and tranquility. The guesthouse, a renovated Berber house, exuded an authentic charm that immediately captivated us. The garden was a lush paradise, filled with vibrant greenery and the soothing sounds of birds. We took a leisurely stroll, admiring the intricate tile work and the meticulous attention to detail that made Dar Zahia so special. According to some reviews, Dar Zahia offers elegant accommodations, a serene garden, a sun terrace, and free WiFi. Some rooms even have balconies with garden views. Sana, the host, is known for her exceptional hospitality, making guests feel right at home.

Sometimes, the most beautiful places are those that offer a sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Next on our itinerary was Riad Amnay, and it was another gem. This riad was a testament to Moroccan craftsmanship, with its stunning architecture and intricate designs. We were greeted with warm smiles and genuine hospitality, which made us feel instantly welcome. We sat in the courtyard, sipping mint tea and listening to the gentle sounds of the fountain. It was a truly immersive experience, and I couldn’t help but reflect on how far I’ve come from my small village in Burkina Faso. Here I am, a renewable energy consultant from Delft, exploring the hidden corners of Morocco with my friends. Life is full of beautiful surprises.

For lunch, we ventured to Snack Bistro Farah. Jan opted for a club sandwich, while I decided to try a traditional Moroccan salad. The service was quick and friendly, and the atmosphere was cozy. Although it wasn't a high-end restaurant, it was a perfect spot for a casual and satisfying meal. I was reminded of the small eateries in Houndé, where simple, hearty meals were always served with a smile. It’s the kind of authenticity that I truly cherish.

In the afternoon, we embarked on a journey to Oasis Tiout, a true hidden treasure of Morocco. Located about 30 kilometers southeast of Taroudant, the oasis was a refreshing escape from the arid landscape. As we approached, the sight of lush greenery and towering palm trees was like a mirage come to life. We explored the palmeraie, wandering through the countless palm trees and vibrant cultivations. The oasis is fed by a natural spring and the oued, creating a dynamic agricultural area in an otherwise arid region. The local villagers cultivate cereals like wheat, barley, and corn, making the most of this fertile land.

We also visited the Kasbah of Tiout, which dates back to the Saadian dynasty in the 16th century. Perched on a hill, the Kasbah offered panoramic views of the palmeraie and its surrounding villages. The views were breathtaking, and I couldn’t resist capturing the moment with my camera. We learned about the traditional irrigation systems that have sustained the oasis for centuries, a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of the local people. It was a powerful reminder of the importance of sustainable practices, a topic that is close to my heart, given my work in renewable energy. The Kasbah de Tiout offers a restaurant with panoramic views of the palmeraie. You can also eat under traditional tents in the heart of the palmeraie.

As the day drew to a close, we headed back to Taroudant for dinner at Tajine restaurant. The restaurant is known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine, specializing in traditional tajines. The ambiance was warm and inviting, with intricate tile work and vibrant colors creating a cozy atmosphere. I opted for the lamb tajine, while Jan chose the chicken version. Each bite was an explosion of flavor, a testament to the slow-cooking process and the skillful use of spices. The friendly staff made us feel like honored guests, and we savored every moment of the leisurely meal. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with exploration and discovery.

Before heading back to our riad, we stopped by Riad Maryam for a drink. This family-run hotel is set in a characteristic house from the beginning of the century and offers a peaceful backdrop for holidays. We sat in the garden, enjoying the cool evening air and reflecting on the day’s adventures. It was the perfect setting to unwind and share our favorite moments from the day.

Tomorrow marks the end of our journey in Taroudant. We plan to visit Dar al-Dabbagh, Le Moulin de Taroudant, and revisit Dar Zahia. We’ll also do some last-minute souvenir shopping at Marché Municipale Jnan Jamaa and have our final meals at Snack El Benna, Café et Restaurant Attadamoune, and Snack Asswar. I’m already feeling a pang of sadness that our time here is coming to an end, but I’m also filled with gratitude for the incredible experiences we’ve shared.

Taroudant has a special place in my heart. It’s a city that offers a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. From the tranquil riads to the refreshing oases, every corner of this city has a story to tell. And as I reflect on our adventures, I’m reminded of the importance of embracing new experiences and connecting with different cultures. It’s through these connections that we grow, learn, and become better versions of ourselves. As I prepare for our final day in Taroudant, I’m filled with a sense of anticipation for what tomorrow will bring. But no matter what happens, I know that the memories we’ve created here will stay with us forever.

I am so happy to share my experiences with you all, and I hope that my stories inspire you to embark on your own adventures. Until next time, take care and keep exploring!
