As my Moroccan adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences I've had in Taroudant. Today was a day of final explorations, a last chance to soak in the sights, sounds, and smells of this enchanting city before heading back to Delft. I wanted to make the most of my final day, ensuring that I left with a heart full of memories and a camera roll bursting with vibrant images.

The day began, as many do, with the promise of new discoveries. It was hard to believe this was the last day of our trip already. After a quick breakfast at Snack El Benna, where I enjoyed a traditional Moroccan pastry and strong coffee, we ventured out to start our day.

Our first stop was Dar al-Dabbagh, the tannery. I must admit, I was a bit hesitant given what I'd heard about the…aromas. But I was determined to experience all facets of Taroudant. The area surrounding the tannery was a hive of activity, with mechanics working on cars and the air filled with a mix of exhaust fumes and…other scents. The tannery itself was a step back in time. Workers were busily treating the hides in stone vats filled with colorful dyes. It was fascinating to see the traditional methods still in use, even if the smell was a bit overwhelming at times. I learned that the hides are soaked in various solutions, including lime and pigeon droppings, to prepare them for the dyeing process. Natural dyes, such as indigo and henna, are then used to create the vibrant colors.

Next on our itinerary was Le Moulin de Taroudant, the windmill. I was intrigued to see how this historical structure played a role in the community. Unfortunately, when we arrived, we found that it wasn't quite what we expected. It was more of a hotel than a working mill, but it did offer a lovely glimpse into the past. The architecture was beautiful, and the views from the top were stunning. I could see the entire city spread out before me, the ancient walls and bustling souks a testament to Taroudant's rich history.

After soaking in the views from Le Moulin, it was time for lunch. We stopped at Café et Restaurant Attadamoune, a local eatery known for its traditional Moroccan cuisine. I ordered a tagine, a slow-cooked stew with vegetables and meat, and it was absolutely delicious. The spices were fragrant and flavorful, and the meat was tender and juicy. It was the perfect way to refuel after a morning of exploring.

With renewed energy, we headed to Marché Municipale Jnan Jamaa, the local market. This was an experience for the senses. The market was a maze of stalls selling everything from fresh produce and spices to clothing and handicrafts. The air was filled with the sounds of vendors hawking their wares and the smells of exotic spices. I wandered through the market, taking in the sights and sounds, and picked up a few souvenirs to take back home to Delft. I bartered for a beautiful hand-woven scarf and a small tagine pot, both reminders of my time in Taroudant. It was a pity to hear from some of the locals that a fire had damaged part of the market recently, but it was still full of life.

Before dinner, we made a stop at DarZahia, a traditional Berber house. This was a truly unique experience. The house had been beautifully restored and offered a glimpse into traditional Moroccan life. The courtyard was filled with plants and flowers, and the rooms were decorated with intricate tilework and traditional furnishings. I learned about the history of the house and the Berber people who had lived there for generations. It was a fascinating look into a culture that is so different from my own.

For our final dinner in Taroudant, we chose Snack Asswar, a local favorite known for its authentic Moroccan dishes. I decided to try the couscous, a traditional Berber dish made with semolina, vegetables, and meat. It was a hearty and flavorful meal, the perfect way to end our culinary journey through Taroudant. The warm hospitality of the staff made the experience even more memorable.

As the sun began to set, we made our way back to our riad, our hearts full of memories. I couldn't help but feel a sense of sadness that our trip was coming to an end. Taroudant had captured my heart with its rich history, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality. I will never forget the experiences I've had here, from exploring the ancient walls and bustling souks to indulging in the local cuisine and learning about the Berber culture.

Reflecting on my time here, I am reminded of how travel enriches our lives, opening our eyes to new perspectives and cultures. As someone deeply committed to sustainable living and ethical practices, I found Taroudant to be a place where tradition and authenticity are valued. It's a reminder that responsible tourism can help preserve cultural heritage and support local communities.

As I pack my bags, I am already dreaming of my next adventure. But Taroudant will always hold a special place in my heart. It's a city that has touched my soul and left me with memories that will last a lifetime.

Tomorrow, we will be heading back to the Netherlands, filled with stories and souvenirs to share. While I am excited to return home to Jan and Amina, I will miss the warmth and beauty of Morocco. This trip has reinforced my belief in the importance of cultural exchange and the power of travel to broaden our horizons.
