Damsels and Dreamers in Mole

Today was all about embracing the tranquil side of Mole National Park, while still soaking in the vibrant energy that makes this place so special. It’s amazing how a change of pace can bring a whole new perspective to a familiar landscape. Jan and Amina were especially excited for a more relaxed day, and I was eager to see what hidden gems we could uncover.

Our day began, as usual, with a delightful breakfast at Zaina Lodge. The morning air was crisp, and the promise of a less structured day was a welcome change. I savored my tea, watching the sunrise paint the savanna with hues of gold and amber. It’s moments like these that remind me why I started this blog – to capture the beauty and serenity that travel brings into our lives.

After breakfast, we set off to explore the Siiru Dam/Reservoir. The drive was scenic, with the landscape unfolding before us in all its August glory. The grasses were tall and swaying, and the air was thick with the scent of damp earth. I was glad I remembered to pack the insect repellent, though I did feel a pang of regret about forgetting the portable phone charger. Note to self: always double-check the essentials!

Reaching the Siiru Dam, we were greeted by a stunning expanse of water, reflecting the sky like a giant mirror. The area was teeming with birdlife, and Amina was thrilled to spot several new species. I tried my hand at birdwatching, but my expertise is definitely limited. Still, it was wonderful to see Amina’s enthusiasm. Jan, ever the patient husband, helped her identify the different birds, sharing interesting facts about each one. I made a mental note to buy a better birdwatching guide for her; it seems a new hobby is blossoming!

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found in the quietest moments.

We spent a couple of hours at Siiru Dam, simply enjoying the peace and quiet. Amina collected colorful stones, while Jan and I sat by the water's edge, chatting and soaking in the scenery. It was a perfect family moment, far removed from the hustle and bustle of Delft. The dam itself is a serene oasis, surrounded by lush greenery, making it ideal for anyone seeking a peaceful escape. The calm waters invite fishing and boating, promising a delightful day on the water.

Next on our itinerary was the Yeleyiri Dam/Reservoir. The drive to Yeleyiri was just as captivating, with the landscape changing subtly as we moved further into the park. Yeleyiri Dam, nestled in the heart of Ole, offered its own unique charm. This reservoir is surrounded by lush greenery, providing picturesque views perfect for photography enthusiasts. We took a leisurely stroll along the dam's banks, enjoying the gentle sound of the water. Amina was particularly fascinated by the local wildlife, and we spotted several interesting insects and small animals.

Lunch took us to the Seoul Grill Restaurant. It felt a bit surreal to be eating Korean food in the middle of Ghana, but the food was delicious, and the change of cuisine was a welcome surprise. Amina particularly enjoyed the bibimbap, while Jan and I savored the bulgogi. The restaurant provided a convenient and satisfying meal, and it was a fun experience to try something so different in such a unique setting.

As the sun began to dip towards the horizon, we decided to check out DREAMER'S SPOT for dinner and drinks. This bar, located in Sawla, is a vibrant hub for both locals and tourists. The atmosphere was lively, with music and laughter filling the air. We ordered some local drinks and appetizers, and Amina enjoyed a refreshing fruit juice. It was a great way to experience the local nightlife and soak in the energy of the community. I even managed to practice a few phrases in Twi, much to the amusement of the locals.

Dinner was at The Venue, a restaurant known for its Ghanaian cuisine with an international flair. We indulged in some traditional dishes, including jollof rice and grilled tilapia. The food was flavorful and satisfying, and it was a great way to end our day of exploration. We shared stories and laughter, reminiscing about our adventures and making plans for the days to come.

As we headed back to Zaina Lodge, the night sky was ablaze with stars. Away from the city lights, the Milky Way stretched across the heavens in a breathtaking display. Amina was mesmerized, and we spent a few minutes simply gazing at the stars, feeling grateful for the beauty of nature and the bonds of family.

Reflecting on the day, I realized that it’s not always about the grand adventures or the exotic destinations. Sometimes, the most memorable moments are the simple ones – a quiet walk by a dam, a shared meal, or a sky full of stars. These are the moments that weave together to create the tapestry of our lives, and I’m so grateful to be sharing them with Jan and Amina.

Tomorrow, we’re planning to visit the KPRIA Waterfall and Jen-Jeng. I’ve heard that the waterfall is especially beautiful this time of year, and Jen-Jeng promises to be an interesting cultural experience. We’re also hoping to do some shopping at Hadjia momo smocks, where I’m hoping to find some unique fabrics to bring back to Delft. I’m excited for another day of adventure, discovery, and connection in this beautiful corner of Ghana. And, of course, I’ll be sure to pack that portable phone charger! Mole National Park continues to surprise and delight, and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.
