Exploring Ghana's hidden gems: Daboya's White Volta, serene Savla Dam, and a unique shopping experience at Auntie's Everything Unisex.
Savannah Adventures: Rivers, Dams, and Local Finds
Today was all about embracing the heart of Ghana's savannah, venturing into the landscapes surrounding Mole National Park. It was a day of serene waters, community connections, and unexpected discoveries. We immersed ourselves in the local culture and natural beauty that define this unique part of the world.
The day began with a hearty breakfast at Zaina Lodge. Fuelling up for our day of exploration. The lodge's serene atmosphere always sets a perfect tone for the adventures ahead. I savored some fresh fruit and local bread, a simple pleasure that makes me feel connected to this land. It's these quiet moments that allow me to appreciate the beauty around me, and to reflect on the journey we're on as a family. Jan and Amina were eager to start the day, their excitement mirroring my own.
Our first stop was the White Volta in Daboya. The journey there was an adventure in itself, with the landscape transforming into a beautiful tapestry of greens and browns. The White Volta, Ghana's main waterway, was a sight to behold. The riverbanks were bustling with activity, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the sheer size and importance of this natural resource. We watched as locals skillfully navigated the waters in their canoes, a testament to their deep connection with the river. I learned that the White Volta originates in Burkina Faso and flows through Ghana, eventually emptying into Lake Volta. It's an essential part of the region's ecosystem and a vital source of water for many communities.
The area is prone to seasonal overflows that can be dangerous, and I was reminded of the importance of water safety. It was also interesting to learn about the efforts to build a bridge over the White Volta in Daboya, which would significantly improve transportation and safety for the local communities. As we stood by the riverbank, I couldn't help but feel a sense of hope for the future, knowing that these developments would bring positive changes to the lives of the people here. We observed the local canoe operators, who navigate the waters daily, and I couldn't help but feel a surge of respect for their skill and resilience. It's a life that demands both courage and a deep understanding of the river's currents.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest of settings.
Next, we set off to discover the Savla Dam, a hidden gem near the Usarangaon Devi Mandir. The drive was scenic, taking us through winding roads and small villages. As we approached the dam, the landscape opened up, revealing a serene body of water surrounded by lush greenery. It was a welcome contrast to the dry savannah we had been traversing. The Savla Dam is a nature lover's paradise, offering a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. The area was perfect for a leisurely stroll, and we took our time to soak in the peaceful atmosphere. Amina was particularly delighted by the birds and butterflies fluttering around the dam, her laughter echoing through the air. Jan and I exchanged smiles, grateful for these moments of simple joy.

I found myself reflecting on the importance of preserving these natural spaces. The Savla Dam not only provides water for the surrounding communities but also serves as a sanctuary for wildlife. It's a reminder of the delicate balance between human needs and environmental conservation. As we walked along the dam's shore, I spotted a few locals fishing, their presence adding to the dam's charm. The calm waters and refreshing breeze made it an ideal spot for relaxation and contemplation. I imagined returning here alone one day, with nothing but a book and the sounds of nature for company. It's these moments of solitude that often bring the greatest clarity and peace.
After our nature immersion, we decided to explore the local culture with a visit to Auntie’s Everything Unisex in Damongo. This boutique is more than just a shop; it’s a cultural experience. As we stepped inside, we were greeted by a vibrant array of colors, fabrics, and designs that celebrate Ghanaian fashion. I was immediately drawn to the handmade items crafted by local artisans, each piece telling a unique story. I picked up a beautiful, hand-painted fan, its design inspired by the local flora and fauna. Amina chose a brightly colored bracelet, her eyes sparkling with excitement. It’s wonderful to find souvenirs that support the local economy and reflect the culture of the region.

The staff at Auntie’s Everything Unisex were incredibly welcoming, offering personalized recommendations and insights into the local fashion scene. I learned that many of the items are made by women in the community, providing them with a sustainable source of income. It’s inspiring to see how fashion can be used as a tool for empowerment and economic development. As we left the shop, I felt a sense of connection to the community, knowing that our purchases had made a small but meaningful impact. I believe that travel should be about more than just seeing new places; it should be about engaging with the local culture and supporting the people who call it home. I smiled, thinking about the stories behind the items we had acquired, each one a reminder of our day in Damongo.
Noble House - Osu was our chosen spot for lunch. It did not disappoint. The flavors were bold and authentic, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. We tried a variety of local dishes, each one a culinary adventure. Amina was particularly fond of the jollof rice, while Jan and I savored the grilled fish. It's moments like these, sharing a meal and trying new flavors, that bring us closer as a family.
As the day drew to a close, we headed back to the lodge, reflecting on our adventures. The sun began its descent, casting a golden glow over the savannah. The air was filled with the sounds of crickets and the distant calls of birds. It was a symphony of nature, a reminder of the beauty that surrounds us. The landscape seemed to come alive as the sun dipped lower, painting the sky with vibrant hues of orange, pink, and purple. We paused for a moment, taking it all in, before continuing our journey back to the lodge. I felt a sense of gratitude for the experiences we had shared, and for the opportunity to witness the wonders of Ghana's savannah.
Dinner at Simret Ethiopian Restaurant was the perfect end to our day. The food was delicious, and the ambiance was cozy and intimate. We shared stories and laughed, reminiscing about our favorite moments from the day. It's these simple moments of connection that I cherish the most. As we prepared for bed, I couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment. Today had been a reminder of the beauty and richness of Ghana's culture and landscape.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Siiru and Yeleyiri Dams/Reservoirs, hoping to discover more of the region’s hidden gems. We might also visit DREAMER'S SPOT for a refreshing drink. I am looking forward to more adventures and new experiences, knowing that each day brings us closer to understanding and appreciating the wonders of Mole National Park and its surroundings. The weather in August is generally tolerable, with temperatures around 79°F, but with potential for rain. So, we'll be sure to pack our rain gear and stay prepared for whatever the day may bring.
As I close my eyes tonight, I am filled with anticipation for what tomorrow holds. The savannah is a place of endless possibilities, and I am eager to continue our exploration of this beautiful and vibrant region. I am also grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family, creating memories that will last a lifetime. Goodnight from Mole National Park, and stay tuned for more adventures from the heart of Ghana.
