Finding Peace and History in Takamatsu
Today was a beautiful blend of relaxation and cultural exploration, a perfect way to immerse myself in the heart of Takamatsu. It reminded me of how important it is to balance the excitement of travel with moments of quiet reflection. From the soothing waters of Dogo Onsen Main Building to the historical charm of Shikoku Village, every moment felt like a step back in time.

My day began with a delightful breakfast at Yuzuan Restaurant [i]. The all-you-can-eat shabu-shabu and sushi were a surprising and satisfying start to the day. The quality of the sushi, especially the seared torosalmon, was remarkable. The attentive service and spacious interior made it a comfortable experience, reminiscent of the warm hospitality I often experience in Brampton's diverse culinary scene. It reminded me of the importance of good food and good company, much like the meals I share with Moses and Hope back home.

After breakfast, I headed to the Dogo Onsen Main Building in Matsuyama. Though technically in Matsuyama, the short train ride was worth it to experience what is said to be one of the oldest hot springs in Japan. The majestic, castle-style wooden structure is designated as an Important Cultural Property, and it truly felt like stepping back in time. The smooth, hot spring water was incredibly soothing. It was the perfect way to relax and prepare for the day ahead. After my bath, I strolled around the local streets, soaking in the culture and spirit of the onsen town. The experience reminded me of the importance of self-care and taking time to rejuvenate, something I often encourage the immigrant families I work with to do.

Next on the itinerary was Shikoku Village, an open-air architectural park showcasing historic buildings from the Edo to Taisho periods. It offered a fascinating glimpse into rural life from years ago, with ancient towns, temples, and palaces. I explored well-preserved cottages, a tea-ceremony house, and even a 250-year-old kabuki stage. The village provided an authentic experience, making me feel like I was living in old Japan. I was particularly impressed by the serene gardens and contemporary artworks scattered throughout the village. The outdoor museum provided insights into Shikoku's history, culture, architecture, arts, and traditional way of life. It was a wonderful way to connect with the past and appreciate the beauty of Japanese heritage. This experience resonated deeply with my own efforts to preserve and share Ugandan culture within my community in Brampton.

For lunch, I decided to try Ombelico, and it was such a treat. After a morning steeped in tradition, it was fun to enjoy a modern meal. The ambiance was cozy, and the food was delicious. It was a delightful culinary experience. I savored every bite, appreciating the blend of flavors and the artistry of the presentation. The restaurant's attention to detail reminded me of the care and dedication that goes into preparing traditional Ugandan dishes, a skill I am always eager to share with Hope.

As evening approached, I ventured to Osusowake Shokudo Mado for dinner, a cafeteria known for its heartwarming atmosphere and community spirit. The name Osusowake means sharing something with others, and that is exactly what this place embodies. The owner, Ms. Chimi Suyama, has created a space where people can connect, share a meal, and support one another. I sat at a table with a group of locals, sharing stories and laughter, feeling a sense of belonging that transcended cultural differences. The menu changes daily, depending on what vegetables Ms. Suyama receives from local farmers. The food was simple, wholesome, and delicious, each dish prepared with love and care. The experience reminded me of the spirit of Ubuntu, the African philosophy of interconnectedness, the belief that I am because we are.

To cap off the night, I decided to check out tone dining bar. The bar offered a wide selection of refreshing beverages. It was the perfect spot to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. The stylish decor and cozy seating created a welcoming atmosphere. I enjoyed a quiet drink, savoring the moment and appreciating the beauty of Takamatsu. It was a pleasant end to a day filled with cultural immersion and relaxation.

As I prepare for tomorrow's journey to the Iya Valley and the famous Vine Bridge , I feel grateful for the experiences of today. The blend of history, culture, and community has enriched my understanding of Shikoku Island and its people. I am excited to explore more of this beautiful region and share my discoveries with you all. Perhaps I'll find a quiet moment to jot down some notes in my Japanese phrasebook, a little reminder of home I sometimes forget to use! I am also looking forward to sharing my experiences with Moses and Hope when I return to Brampton. Until then, stay tuned for more adventures from Shikoku Island!
There’s also the Sanuki Takamatsu Festival at Sunport Takamatsu in August, which I might try to check out if I have time. It features parades, music performances, dance shows, and food stalls. It seems like a great way to experience the local traditions and arts of Kagawa Prefecture.
