Echoes of the Past in Iya Valley

Today, I embarked on a journey to one of the most secluded and historically rich areas of Shikoku Island. It was a day filled with natural beauty, cultural immersion, and a thrilling step back in time as I explored ancient traditions and breathtaking landscapes. From the moment I set foot in this hidden valley, I felt a sense of wonder and reverence for the stories etched into its very soil.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Hakkenden Nankoku Osone in Kochi [i]. The restaurant had a Showa retro atmosphere, which I found quite charming. It reminded me of the simpler times back in Kyenjojo. I enjoyed authentic charcoal-grilled yakitori, which gave me the energy I needed for a day of exploration.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off to explore the famed Iya Valley. The drive itself was an adventure, with winding roads offering glimpses of the rugged landscape. The valley is known for its steep mountain slopes and deep rocky gorges, a landscape so different from the flatlands of Brampton. It felt like stepping into another world, a world where time stood still. As I ventured deeper, the air grew cooler, and the scenery became more dramatic. The lush greenery was a feast for the eyes, and I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to witness such natural beauty.

My first stop was the iconic Vine Bridge in the Iya Valley, or Iya Kazurabashi. As I approached, I couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation. The bridge, made of woven vines, stretched across the Iya River, a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the people who once relied on it for survival.

Before crossing, I took a moment to learn about the history of these bridges. It's said that they were initially created by members of the Taira clan, also known as Heike, who sought refuge in the valley after losing the Genpei War in the late 12th century. Another theory suggests that the Buddhist monk Kukai, also known as Kobo-Daishi, built them to help villagers. Regardless of their exact origins, these bridges have become an integral part of the valley's identity, symbolizing resilience and adaptability.

Taking a deep breath, I stepped onto the bridge. The sensation was unlike anything I had ever experienced. The bridge swayed gently with each step, and the gaps between the planks offered a thrilling view of the river below. It was a test of courage, but also a reminder of the simple yet profound ways in which people have connected with nature throughout history. I moved slowly and deliberately, trying to absorb every moment of this unique experience. I thought of Moses, who would have loved to see this feat of engineering. He always appreciated practical solutions to difficult problems.

The Iya Valley is a place where nature and history intertwine, offering a glimpse into a Japan that feels both ancient and timeless.

After conquering the Vine Bridge, I worked up an appetite and headed to Restaurant&Cafe Riina for lunch. This cafe in Shikokuchuo offers a delightful menu with plenty of vegetable options. I decided on the 6 plate lunch, which allowed me to sample a variety of dishes. The vegetables were fresh and flavorful, and the presentation was beautiful. It was a perfect way to refuel before continuing my adventure.

With renewed energy, I decided to indulge in some shopping at Plugs Market Kochi Store. This charming store offered a diverse range of products, from cosmetics to home improvement supplies. I was particularly drawn to the local crafts, which reflected the artistry of the region. I picked up a few souvenirs for Hope and my friends back in Brampton, wanting to share a piece of Shikoku Island with them. I even found a small Adungu replica, which reminded me of home and my passion for Ugandan music.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Tosa Rokkon for dinner. This restaurant in Kami, Kochi, is known for its authentic Japanese cuisine and dedication to traditional cooking methods. I savored the local flavors, from fresh sushi to seasonal specialties. The chefs here take pride in sourcing ingredients from local markets, which is something I deeply appreciate. The meal was a perfect end to a day of exploration and cultural immersion.

One thing that struck me throughout the day was the sense of community and connection to the land that permeates the Iya Valley. The people here have a deep respect for their history and traditions, and they are eager to share their culture with visitors. It reminded me of the strong sense of community in Kyenjojo, where everyone looked out for one another and celebrated their shared heritage.

As I reflect on my experiences today, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and wonder. The Iya Valley is a place where time seems to slow down, where nature and history intertwine, and where the spirit of the past lives on in the present. It is a place that has touched my heart and soul, and I know that I will carry its memories with me long after I leave.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Oku-Iya Double Vine Bridge and Shikoku Karst. I am excited to see more of this beautiful island and to continue learning about its rich culture and history. I might even stop by the Irish Pub Amontillado for a nightcap.

Until then, I bid you goodnight from the enchanting Iya Valley.

P.S. I almost forgot! I was so engrossed in the beauty of the Iya Valley that I nearly forgot to buy a raincoat or umbrella. Luckily, I remembered just in time and found a small shop selling them near the Vine Bridge. It's a good reminder to always be prepared for unexpected weather, especially when traveling in the mountains.
