Wheels and Waterfalls: An Unforgettable Day on Shikoku Island

Today was a day of contrasts, a blend of man-made marvels and natural wonders that perfectly encapsulates the diverse beauty of Shikoku Island. From gleaming vintage automobiles to the thundering cascades of a majestic waterfall, it was an adventure that engaged all the senses. It reminded me of the simple joys of discovery, something I always cherish when traveling solo.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Eki-mae Shokudo in the morning. The cozy atmosphere and the aroma of traditional Japanese cuisine were the perfect way to kickstart my explorations. I savored a comforting bowl of miso soup and grilled fish, fueling up for the day ahead. It's these little moments of immersion in local culture that make my solo trips so rewarding. I thought of Moses back home, who would have loved the simplicity and warmth of this little eatery.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off for the Shikoku Automobile Museum. As someone who appreciates engineering and design, I was eager to see the collection of classic cars and motorcycles housed there. The museum is located in Konan, and it took a little while to get there using local transport. But the journey itself offered glimpses of rural Shikoku, with its terraced rice fields and quaint villages. It was a reminder of the slower pace of life here, a welcome contrast to the hustle and bustle of Brampton.

Stepping into the Shikoku Automobile Museum was like stepping back in time. The showroom was filled with gleaming vintage cars, each one a testament to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of its era. From sleek European sports cars to iconic Japanese models, the collection was diverse and fascinating. I was particularly impressed by a DeLorean DMC-12, a blast from the past. There was also a fantastic lineup of bikes, from BMWs to Royal Enfields and BSAs. As I wandered through the exhibits, I couldn't help but imagine the stories behind each vehicle – the open roads they had traveled, the people they had carried, and the dreams they had represented. It was a celebration of automotive history, and I found myself completely captivated.

The journey matters as much as the destination.

Leaving the museum, I felt a sense of exhilaration, a renewed appreciation for the artistry and innovation that drives human progress. But the day was far from over. Next on the agenda was a visit to Todoroki Falls, a natural wonder that promised to be just as awe-inspiring as the mechanical marvels I had just witnessed.

The drive to Todoroki Falls was an adventure in itself. The roads became narrower and more winding, and the scenery grew increasingly lush and dramatic. Towering trees formed a verdant canopy overhead, filtering the sunlight and creating an ethereal glow. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and the sound of rushing water grew louder with each passing mile. I was reminded of the forests back in Uganda, the source of so much life and mystery.

Finally, I arrived at the trailhead for Todoroki Falls. The path leading to the falls was a bit challenging, with uneven steps and slippery rocks, but the anticipation of seeing the cascade spurred me on. As I hiked deeper into the forest, the sound of the waterfall grew deafening, and the air became cooler and more humid. And then, suddenly, I caught my first glimpse of Todoroki Falls – a breathtaking torrent of water plunging down a sheer cliff face into a crystal-clear pool below.

The sight was truly awe-inspiring. The power and majesty of the waterfall were humbling, and I felt a sense of connection to the natural world that is hard to describe. I spent a long time simply gazing at the falls, listening to the roar of the water and feeling the spray on my face. It was a moment of pure serenity, a chance to escape the noise and stress of everyday life and reconnect with my inner self. I thought of Hope, my daughter, and wished she could be here to experience this with me.

According to some sources, the trail continues past the main fall to Nabewari Falls, about a 3km round trip. I decided to explore a bit further, and I was rewarded with views of smaller cascades and lush forest scenery. There is a shrine near the main fall, Todoroki Shrine, adding a spiritual element to the experience.

After a long hike, I was definitely ready for lunch. I stopped by Restaurant Obokekyo Mannaka. The restaurant uses a unique machine ticket system for ordering. While some reviewers found the food to be average, I was eager to try some local dishes. I enjoyed the picturesque view of the gorge while dining.

As evening approached, I made my way back to Takamatsu, feeling tired but deeply satisfied. Before heading back to my guesthouse, I decided to treat myself to a drink at BAR OOKUNI. This casual bar is known for its friendly atmosphere and master. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. The master was indeed very friendly and made me feel at home, sharing stories and laughter. It reminded me of the pubs back in Brampton, where people from all walks of life come together to share a drink and conversation. I even tried a cocktail or two, each one expertly mixed and surprisingly affordable.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Lake Sameura and the Kurushima Strait Observatory. I'm also planning to grab breakfast at Hakkenden Nankoku Osone and lunch at Inonakanokawazu. In the evening, I might do some shopping at youme Town Tokushima before dinner at Osusowake Shokudo Mado.

Today was a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but about experiencing new things – engaging with different cultures, challenging oneself physically and mentally, and connecting with the natural world. And as I prepare for the next leg of my journey, I feel grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful island and share my experiences with all of you. I am so grateful for this journey and for the peace it brings me, a peace I hope to carry back home to Brampton.
