A Day of Serene Reflections

Today was a day of contrasts, from the still waters of a mountain lake to the bustling lanes of a local shopping center. It was a day where the beauty of nature met the warmth of human connection, leaving me with a deeper appreciation for the simple joys of life and the rich tapestry of experiences that Shikoku Island has to offer. I am so grateful for these moments that allow me to reflect and recharge.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Hakkenden Nankoku Osone in Nankoku. The restaurant had a Showa retro atmosphere, creating a calm and inviting space. I enjoyed authentic charcoal-grilled yakitori and other signature dishes. The warmth of the food and the friendly service set a positive tone for the day ahead. It reminded me of the small, family-run restaurants back in Uganda, where the food is always made with love and care. It was the perfect way to fuel up before heading out to explore the natural wonders of Shikoku.

Next on the agenda was a visit to Lake Sameura in Tosa. As I approached the lake, I was immediately struck by its serene beauty. The water was so still, reflecting the surrounding mountains like a mirror. The lush greenery and gentle hills created a tranquil environment, perfect for unwinding and reconnecting with nature. I took a leisurely stroll along the water's edge, soaking in the calming atmosphere and breathing in the fresh air. It was a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Lake Sameura is the largest reservoir in Shikoku and supplies water to each prefecture in Shikoku. The lake was created by a dam constructed in the 70s. I learned that the lake has become a place where young people can foster a love for their hometown. The area is ideal for leisurely strolls along the water’s edge, allowing visitors to soak in the calming atmosphere and breathe in the fresh air.

I found a peaceful spot by the lakeside and sat down to simply observe. The sun was shining, and a gentle breeze rustled through the trees. I watched as a few locals set out in canoes, gliding effortlessly across the water. The scene was so picturesque; it felt like something out of a movie. In that moment, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such beauty and tranquility. It reminded me of the importance of taking time to slow down and appreciate the simple things in life.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quietest moments.

After spending a couple of hours at Lake Sameura, I decided to make my way to the Kurushima Strait Observatory in Imabari. The drive itself was stunning, with winding roads offering panoramic views of the coastline. As I arrived at the observatory, I was immediately struck by the breathtaking scenery. The observatory has a panoramic observation platform at 301.1 m above sea level, affording a 360-degree view of the grand scenery of the Kurushima Straits Bridge and the tidal currents of the Kurushima Straits. The Kurushima Kaikyo Bridges are a set of three suspension bridges with a total length of 4.1 km. The bridges connect Imabari City in Ehime Prefecture to Oshima Island.

From the observatory, I could see the intricate waterways, lush islands, and iconic bridges that connect them. The blue hues of the sea were mesmerizing, and the panoramic views were simply awe-inspiring. I spent a long time taking photographs and simply soaking in the beauty of the surroundings. The observatory is designed to enhance your experience with comfortable viewing areas and informative displays about the local ecology and history. It was a truly unforgettable experience, and I felt so grateful to have witnessed such natural beauty. I learned that the observation platform itself is concealed within the mountaintop to protect the scenery.

For lunch, I stopped at Inonakanokawazu. This restaurant captures the essence of Japanese culinary traditions, offering a menu that features seasonal ingredients and classic recipes. The restaurant had an inviting and serene ambiance. I savored dishes prepared with care and precision, reflecting the artistry that is central to Japanese cuisine. It was a delightful culinary experience that perfectly complemented the day's adventures.

With the afternoon sun beginning to dip, I decided to head to youme Town Tokushima for a bit of shopping. This shopping mall opened in 2011 and is the largest shopping mall in Tokushima Prefecture. The facility holds about 160 shops including the most popular fashion retailers, daily goods stores, knick-knack shops, and other special services. I wasn't necessarily looking for anything in particular, but I enjoy browsing local shops and seeing what they have to offer. Youme Town Tokushima is a large shopping mall with a diverse range of shops and restaurants. The first floor houses a range of popular restaurants while the second floor features a diverse food court offering Japanese, Western, and Chinese cuisines as well as fast food options.

I ended up spending a couple of hours wandering through the mall, admiring the colorful displays and unique products. I picked up a few souvenirs for Moses and Hope, knowing they would appreciate a little piece of Shikoku to remind them of my trip. The mall is designed to cater to all ages, making it a perfect stop for families, couples, and solo travelers alike. The experience was a fun and lighthearted way to end the day, and I left with a smile on my face and a few extra bags in tow. I even stopped by the GODIVA store and bought a few chocolates.

Dinner was at Osusowake Shokudo Mado in Kami. This cafeteria is known for its heartwarming atmosphere and community spirit. The name Osusowake means sharing something with others, and that is exactly what this place embodies. The owner, Ms. Chimi Suyama, has created a space where people can connect, share a meal, and support one another. The cafeteria is considered original because of the roles it plays. The term “Kodomo Shokudo” means the place where children can have meals cheaply.

The menu features a variety of classic dishes, including rice bowls, seasonal vegetables, and expertly prepared fish, all presented with care and attention to detail. The use of fresh ingredients sourced from local markets enhances the flavors of each dish, ensuring an unforgettable dining experience. I sat at a table with a group of locals, sharing stories and laughter, feeling a sense of belonging that transcended cultural differences. It reminded me of the spirit of Ubuntu, the African philosophy of interconnectedness, the belief that I am because we are. I left the cafeteria feeling full, not just from the delicious food, but also from the warmth and kindness of the people I had met. It was a truly special experience that I will cherish for a long time. It reminded me of the importance of community and the power of sharing a meal together.

As I reflect on the day, I am struck by the incredible diversity of experiences that Shikoku Island has to offer. From the serene beauty of Lake Sameura to the breathtaking views from the Kurushima Strait Observatory, and the heartwarming atmosphere of Osusowake Shokudo Mado, each moment has been a gift. I am so grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful island and connect with its people.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Kami City Takashi Yanase Memorial Hall & Anpanman Museum and Aji Ryuozan Park [See: ITINERARY OF TOMORROW]. I am looking forward to another day of adventure and discovery, and I can't wait to see what Shikoku has in store for me next. I am especially excited to visit the Anpanman Museum, as I have heard so much about it and I know it will be a fun and whimsical experience. I am also looking forward to exploring Aji Ryuozan Park and taking in the natural beauty of the area. I am sure it will be another day filled with unforgettable moments and cherished memories. Goodnight from Shikoku!
