A Day of Discovery in Ruhija and Rushaga
Today was a day of immersing ourselves in the heart of Bwindi, experiencing the warmth of its people and the richness of its culture. It was a day that reminded me why I longed to return to Uganda, to share its beauty with my family. The day was filled with so many unique experiences that I am excited to share with you all.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the Bwindi View Lodge. The lodge, perched perfectly to offer stunning views, fueled us with a delicious meal and anticipation for the day ahead. I must say, it is always a pleasure to enjoy a wonderful meal while taking in the beauty of nature. Moses was particularly impressed with the strong Ugandan coffee, a perfect start to our adventurous day.

Our first stop was in Ruhija, a serene sector of Bwindi known for its breathtaking vistas. The drive itself was an experience, with winding roads offering panoramic views of the lush, rolling hills. The cool, misty air was a refreshing change from the warmer temperatures we’d experienced earlier. I couldn't help but feel grateful for the chance to share this with my family, to show them the Uganda I hold so dear. The weather in Bwindi during May is generally warm and humid, with average highs of 77°F (25°C) and lows of 67°F (20°C). We were fortunate to have a comfortable day, with the sun peeking through the clouds just enough to illuminate the stunning landscapes.

We then ventured into the Rushaga Sector. This area is known for its unique cultural experiences and community-based tourism. I was particularly excited about our visit to the Bwindi Coffee Experience. As someone who appreciates a good cup of coffee, I was eager to learn about the local process. We met with local farmers who showed us every step, from cultivating the beans to roasting them over an open fire. The aroma was intoxicating, and the taste? Unforgettable! It was a truly immersive experience, and I even tried my hand at grinding the roasted beans with a traditional mortar and pestle. Hope was especially fascinated by the entire process, and even purchased some beans to take back to Canada. Moses, of course, enjoyed sampling the final product a little too much.

The warmth of the people and the richness of the culture in Bwindi is an experience that stays with you long after you leave.
After our coffee adventure, we explored the local craft shops. I was immediately drawn to the vibrant colors and intricate designs of the handmade baskets and wood carvings. Supporting local artisans is important to me, so I made sure to purchase a few items as gifts for friends back home. I found a beautiful, hand-woven basket that will be perfect for storing my sewing supplies, and Moses picked out a detailed wood carving of a gorilla for his office. Hope found a colorful headwrap that she immediately wore, adding a touch of Ugandan flair to her outfit.
For lunch, we enjoyed a delicious meal at The Crested Crane Bwindi Hotel. The food was incredible, offering a taste of authentic Ugandan cuisine. I had the opportunity to try matooke (cooked green bananas), a staple food in Uganda, and it was absolutely delicious. Moses enjoyed a hearty portion of grilled tilapia, while Hope opted for a vegetarian dish made with local vegetables. The Crested Crane Bwindi Hotel provided a wonderful culinary experience, allowing us to savor the flavors of Uganda in a relaxed and comfortable setting.

Our final meal of the day was at Silverback Lodge. The lodge is perched high, overlooking the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, providing a stunning backdrop for our dinner. The atmosphere was serene, and the food was exceptional. We enjoyed traditional Ugandan dishes, sharing stories and laughter as the sun set over the forest. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day. Silverback Lodge is known for its close proximity to the Buhoma sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, offering a tranquil safari experience. The lodge is constructed out of naturally occurring materials, blending seamlessly with the surrounding environment.

Today was more than just a sightseeing tour; it was about connecting with the heart and soul of Bwindi. The beauty of the landscape, the warmth of the people, and the richness of the culture made it a day I will never forget. I am so grateful to have shared this experience with my family, and I know that these memories will stay with us for a lifetime.
As I reflect on our experiences today, I'm filled with excitement for what tomorrow holds. We will be visiting the Gorilla Katweew group and Mahamba Wild Africa. I am particularly excited about the opportunity to see the gorillas in their natural habitat, and I know that it will be an experience that we will never forget. I am also looking forward to visiting Mahamba Wild Africa, where we will learn more about the local ecosystem and the importance of conservation. And perhaps, if time allows, we might even sneak in a visit to Bwindi Bar for a nightcap.
The weather forecast for tomorrow looks promising, with comfortable temperatures and a chance of sunshine. I am hopeful that the conditions will be favorable for our gorilla trek, and I am eager to see these magnificent creatures up close. I have packed our essentials, including comfortable hiking boots, rain jackets, and binoculars, ensuring that we are prepared for whatever the day may bring. Although I did forget extra memory cards for the camera and a portable phone charger, I am confident that we will make do with what we have. After all, it's not about having everything perfect, but about embracing the adventure and creating lasting memories.
Goodnight from Bwindi, and stay tuned for more tales from the Impenetrable Forest!
I cannot wait to share tomorrow's adventure with you all! It is truly a blessing to be able to share this experience with you all.
