Discover Ishigaki Island's beauty with family: scenic views, local markets, and authentic cuisine. A perfect start to our Japanese adventure!
First Impressions of Paradise
After a long journey from Berlin, via Tokyo, we finally arrived on Ishigaki Island, ready to embrace the slower pace of island life. The kids were excited, Maximilian was eager to disconnect from work, and I was thrilled to start documenting our adventures. This trip is not just a vacation; it's a chance for us to reconnect as a family and immerse ourselves in a culture so different from our own.
Our first day was a blend of scenic exploration and cultural immersion, designed to give us a taste of what Ishigaki has to offer. It was a day filled with stunning views, delicious food, and the warm hospitality that Japan is known for. The air is thick with humidity, but a refreshing breeze keeps things comfortable, and the vibrant green landscape is a feast for the eyes.
Panoramic Views from Tamatorizaki Observation Platform
Our first stop was the Tamatorizaki Observation Platform. The drive itself was an experience, with lush subtropical plants lining the roads. As we ascended the small hill, the panoramic views began to unfold, revealing Cape Tamatori and the deep blue waters of Ibaruma Bay. The kids were immediately captivated, pointing out the different shades of blue in the ocean and the rolling green hills.
The observation platform is easily accessible, making it perfect for a family outing. Astrid, of course, was the first one to run up the steps, eager to see everything. Maximilian and I followed at a more leisurely pace, taking in the breathtaking scenery. The platform is surrounded by vibrant hibiscus flowers, adding a splash of color to the already stunning landscape.
From the top, we could see the coral reefs stretching out into the emerald ocean. It was a truly peaceful moment, soaking in nature's beauty and feeling the sea breeze on our faces. I made sure to take plenty of photos, trying to capture the essence of this idyllic spot, though I know no picture can truly do it justice. I can already tell that this island will be a photographer's dream!

“Sometimes, the most beautiful places are those that offer a moment of quiet contemplation amidst the grandeur of nature.”
A Taste of Local Flavors at Tofu Higa
For breakfast, we ventured to Tofu Higa, a local favorite known for its yushi-dofu, a unique Okinawan tofu. The restaurant is a bit hidden, tucked away on a gravel road lined with basho (Japanese banana) trees, but it was well worth the effort to find. Tofu Higa is a cozy island restaurant in Ishigaki that specializes in freshly-made yushi-dofu, a tofu variety that's unique to Okinawa.
We arrived early, which I was grateful for, as the place tends to sell out by noon. The menu is simple, focusing on the yushi-dofu served in various ways. I opted for the classic set meal, which included rice, an omelet, and seasoned vegetables. The tofu was incredibly soft and flavorful, with a gentle taste that was perfect for a light breakfast. Maximilian and Astrid also enjoyed their meals, though Astrid was more interested in the soy milk that came with the set.
The atmosphere was charming, with spacious terrace seating in front of a tofu factory that has been in business for over 70 years. It was a great way to start the day, experiencing a local culinary tradition and feeling the warmth of Okinawan hospitality. It reminded me of simple breakfasts back home in Fyresdal, Norway.

Exploring the Ishigaki City Public Market
Next on our itinerary was the Ishigaki City Public Market, located in the heart of downtown. This bustling market is a treasure trove of local goods, offering everything from fresh seafood and Ishigaki beef to local fruits, vegetables, and souvenirs.
As we stepped into the market, we were immediately greeted by a vibrant scene of locals and tourists alike, all eager to explore the various stalls. The first floor was a feast for the senses, with colorful displays of fresh fish, local vegetables, and the famous Ishigaki beef. Maximilian was particularly interested in the beef, while Astrid was fascinated by the unusual fruits she had never seen before.
We sampled some of the local produce, including a sweet and juicy pineapple that was unlike anything we've ever tasted. The market is a great place to find seasonal delights, and we were lucky to be there during the peak of summer. I picked up some spices and local snacks to bring back to Berlin, hoping to recreate some of the flavors we've experienced here.
The second floor of the market was dedicated to souvenirs and local crafts. We found a variety of unique items, including Shisa pottery, Ryukyu glassware, and colorful woven fabrics from the Yaeyama Islands. Astrid was particularly drawn to the traditional Okinawan sanshin instrument, and she even got a chance to try playing it.
The Ishigaki City Public Market is more than just a place to shop; it's a cultural hub where you can experience the local way of life. It's a place where you can interact with the vendors, learn about the local products, and immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of Ishigaki.

Lunch at Kabira Tei: A Culinary Delight
For lunch, we decided to treat ourselves to a meal at Kabira Tei, a Japanese steakhouse known for its delicious Ishigaki beef. The restaurant is located near Kabira Bay, offering a beautiful setting for a memorable dining experience.
We started with some appetizers, including peanut tofu deep fried and pork belly. Both were delicious, with unique flavors that showcased the local cuisine. For the main course, we opted for the Ishigaki rump steak, which was cooked to perfection and served with local salt and a balsamic reduction enhanced with Okinawan long pepper. The steak was incredibly tender and flavorful, melting in our mouths with each bite.
Maximilian, being the beer enthusiast, enjoyed a local Orion beer with his meal, while I savored a glass of fine wine. The service was exceptional, with the staff going above and beyond to ensure we had a memorable dining experience. The presentation of the dishes was also beautiful, adding to the overall ambiance of the restaurant.
Kabira Tei is definitely a place to splurge and indulge in the local Ishigaki beef. It's a culinary experience that you won't want to miss, and it's a perfect way to appreciate the high-quality ingredients and skillful preparation that define Okinawan cuisine.

Stargazing at Ishigakijima Hoshizora Farm
As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Ishigakijima Hoshizora Farm, a unique stargazing spot on the island. Ishigaki Island is known for its clear skies and minimal light pollution, making it an ideal location for observing the stars. In fact, parts of the island have been certified as an International Dark Sky Park, recognizing its commitment to preserving the natural night sky.
The farm offers unobstructed views of the night sky, allowing visitors to witness the stars in all their glory. We arrived just as the sun was setting, casting a warm golden glow over the landscape. As darkness fell, the stars began to appear, one by one, until the sky was filled with a dazzling display of celestial lights.
Astrid was mesmerized, pointing out the different constellations and asking endless questions about the planets and stars. Maximilian and I were equally captivated, feeling a sense of awe and wonder as we gazed up at the vast expanse of the universe. It was a truly magical experience, one that reminded us of our place in the grand scheme of things.

Dinner at Funakura-no-sato: Traditional Okinawan Cuisine and Music
To cap off our first day, we had dinner at Funakura-no-sato, a traditional Okinawan restaurant known for its local cuisine and live music. The restaurant is housed in old traditional buildings, creating an authentic and cozy ambiance.
As we entered the restaurant, we were greeted by the sounds of traditional Okinawan music, played live by a sanshin player. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with friendly staff and a relaxed vibe. We were seated at a table overlooking a beautiful garden, adding to the overall charm of the place.
We ordered a variety of dishes, including mimiga (thinly-sliced pigs' ears), rafute (braised pork belly), and umibudo (sea grapes). Each dish was prepared with local ingredients and showcased the unique flavors of Okinawan cuisine. I particularly enjoyed the jimami-dofu, a creamy peanut-based tofu that had been soaked in awamori liquor. It packed quite a punch!
Throughout the evening, we were treated to live music and traditional dances. The musicians were very talented, and they encouraged the diners to participate in the dancing. Astrid, of course, was the first one to join in, clapping along to the music and trying to imitate the dancers. It was a fun and interactive experience, one that gave us a glimpse into the local culture.
Funakura-no-sato is more than just a restaurant; it's a cultural experience. It's a place where you can enjoy delicious food, listen to traditional music, and immerse yourself in the warm hospitality of the Okinawan people. It was the perfect way to end our first day on Ishigaki Island.
