Island Escapades: A Day of Discovery

Today was an adventure-filled day, a blend of cultural immersion, natural beauty, and delightful culinary experiences. It's days like these that remind me why I love traveling – the unexpected discoveries, the shared moments with my family, and the chance to create lasting memories. Ishigaki Island continues to surprise and enchant us at every turn.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Kerala Kitchen. I was craving something different from the usual Japanese fare, and this South Indian restaurant was just the ticket. The aroma of spices filled the air as we stepped inside, and the colorful decor immediately transported me back to my travels in India. I opted for a spicy chicken curry, while Maximilian enjoyed a vegetarian thali. Astrid, surprisingly, loved the dahl curry! It's always a win when we find a place that caters to everyone's tastes. It reminded me of the time we found a small Norwegian bakery in the middle of Rome – sometimes, a little taste of home (or something completely unexpected) is exactly what you need. Fully energized, we set off for our first adventure: a ferry trip to Taketomi Island.

The ferry ride itself was a treat, with the turquoise waters sparkling under the morning sun. Taketomi Island is a small, serene escape from the slightly more bustling Ishigaki. As we approached the island, the traditional Ryukyu houses with their red-tiled roofs came into view, a scene straight out of a postcard. Private vehicles aren't allowed on the island, so we rented bicycles near the port. Astrid was thrilled to have her own little bike, and we pedaled along the sandy roads, exploring the charming village. The island is small enough that cycling is a great option to see many sights.

We wandered through the village, admiring the traditional architecture and the vibrant bougainvillea flowers that seemed to be everywhere. It felt like stepping back in time, a peaceful contrast to the modern cityscapes we're used to in Berlin. We even spotted a few *shisa* statues, the mythological lion-like figures that guard the houses. Astrid was particularly fascinated by these, asking about their stories and purpose. I made a mental note to read up on Ryukyu mythology later; it's always rewarding to learn about the local culture through the eyes of a child.

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning you didn't even think to ask.

Our next stop was Kaiji Beach, famous for its star-shaped sand. We spent a good hour searching for these tiny treasures, Astrid squealing with delight every time she found one. Although swimming isn't allowed here due to strong currents, the views were stunning, and the unique sand made it a memorable experience. We then cycled to Kondoi Beach, known for its pristine white sands and crystal-clear waters. The water was so inviting that we couldn't resist taking a dip. Astrid splashed around happily, while Maximilian and I enjoyed a refreshing swim. It was the perfect way to cool off in the August heat. After a morning of exploration, we were ready for lunch. We headed to Sabanisen, a local *izakaya* known for its fresh seafood.

The restaurant was bustling with locals, always a good sign. We ordered a variety of dishes, including sushi, sashimi, and some local Ishigaki specialties. The seafood was incredibly fresh, a testament to the island's rich marine life. Astrid even tried a few bites of sushi, much to our surprise. It's wonderful to see her becoming more adventurous with food. After lunch, we hopped back on the ferry to Ishigaki, ready for our next adventure: Ibaruma Heart Rock.

The drive to Ibaruma was scenic, with lush green landscapes and glimpses of the coastline. When we arrived at Ibaruma Heart Rock, I was immediately struck by its beauty. The heart-shaped rock formation is a natural wonder, created over centuries by erosion and weathering. It's become a symbol of romantic tourism in Okinawa, and I can see why. The area has bike racks and pedestrian paths. We took some photos, enjoying the picturesque moment. Astrid, of course, wanted to climb on everything, but we managed to keep her relatively safe.

Our final stop for the day was the Blue Cave. This natural wonder is a bit hidden, requiring a walk through a jungle path and, depending on the tide, a swim or snorkel into the cave. We opted for a guided snorkeling tour to ensure our safety and make the most of the experience. The water inside the cave glowed with an ethereal blue light, a truly magical sight. We snorkeled through the crystal-clear waters, marveling at the colorful fish and coral reefs. Astrid was a bit nervous at first, but our guide was patient and encouraging, and soon she was swimming alongside us, pointing out all the fascinating marine life. I never thought I'd see her so comfortable in the water!

After our snorkeling adventure, we were famished. We decided to treat ourselves to a special dinner at Steak & Restaurant PAPOIYA. This restaurant is known for its Ishigaki beef, a local delicacy. The restaurant is located on the 8th floor of a building, offering spectacular sunset views. The staff were friendly and attentive, and the chef even brought out our steak selection before cooking. We ordered sirloin and tenderloin steaks, and they were cooked to perfection. The meat was so tender and flavorful that it melted in our mouths. It was the perfect way to end our day of adventures.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we made a quick stop at CACAO MARKET by MarieBelle Ishigaki. This chocolate shop is like stepping into a magical chocolate factory, with vintage decorations and a wide selection of chocolates. We picked up a few treats for ourselves and some souvenirs for friends back home. Astrid was in chocolate heaven, of course. As we walked back, hand in hand, I felt a deep sense of gratitude. These are the moments I cherish most – exploring new places with my family, creating memories that will last a lifetime. Ishigaki Island has been a wonderful surprise, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
