Family Adventure on Ishigaki Island

A Day of Island Wonders

Today was a day filled with laughter, sunshine, and unforgettable moments as we continued our exploration of Ishigaki Island. From playful dolphins to serene beaches and impressive bridges, Ishigaki has a way of captivating your heart. It's days like these that remind me why I love travelling with my family, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Ishigaki Island Village. It was a great way to start the day, fuelling up for all the adventures we had planned. Astrid was particularly excited, knowing we were going to see dolphins!

Meeting the Dolphins at Dolphin Fantasy

Our first stop was Dolphin Fantasy Ishigaki Island. I’ve always been fascinated by these intelligent creatures, and I was eager to share this experience with Maximilian and Astrid. The facility is about a 30-minute drive from the airport. As we approached, Astrid squealed with excitement, pointing at the dolphin illustrations adorning the reception area.

We opted for the Dolphin Swim course, which allowed us to get up close and personal with these amazing animals. The trainers were incredibly knowledgeable and passionate, teaching us about dolphin behavior and conservation. Astrid was a natural, giggling as she fed the dolphins and learned to give them cues for handshakes and jumps. Even Maximilian, who usually prefers historical sites to animal encounters, was thoroughly impressed.

It was truly magical to see the dolphins up close, their expressions so different from what you see on TV. The experience was both educational and heartwarming, reinforcing the importance of protecting these incredible marine creatures. Astrid hasn't stopped talking about it. She wants to be a dolphin trainer when she grows up!

It's not just about seeing the sights, but about connecting with the heart of a place and creating memories that resonate long after you've left.

Soaking Up the Sun at Fusaki Beach

After our dolphin encounter, we decided to unwind at Fusaki Beach. I had read about its beautiful sunsets, but even in the afternoon, it was stunning. The beach is part of the Fusaki Beach Resort, but you don't need to be a guest to enjoy it. The resort provides amenities like showers and bars. The soft, white sand and clear turquoise waters were incredibly inviting, and we quickly changed into our swimwear.

Astrid spent most of her time building sandcastles, while Maximilian and I took turns swimming in the large fenced area, which is helpfully protected from jellyfish. The water was so clear, perfect for a relaxing dip. I made sure to wear flip-flops, as I'd read that the sand can be a bit rough with crushed coral.

We strolled along the pier, taking in the panoramic views of the ocean. The beach was lively, but not overly crowded, creating a perfect balance of energy and tranquility. I can imagine how spectacular the sunset would be from here, perhaps with cocktails from the Star Bar.

Crossing the Southern Gate Bridge

As the afternoon progressed, we decided to explore the Southern Gate Bridge. This iconic blue bridge connects Ishigaki Port Terminal to the reclaimed land and Nannuhama Town. It’s about a 5-minute walk from the terminal. We parked at the foot of the bridge and decided to walk across, enjoying the gentle sea breeze.

The bridge offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape, and we took our time, snapping photos of the picturesque waters. Astrid loved watching the boats pass underneath, pointing out the different shapes and sizes. It was a leisurely stroll, perfect for soaking in the tranquil atmosphere of Ishigaki.

I read that the bridge is particularly beautiful at twilight, when the setting sun bathes the structure in warm hues. Though we didn't stay that long, I could imagine how magical it would be. It’s a popular spot for both locals and tourists, creating a vibrant hub of activity.

Sweet Treats and Culinary Delights

Before dinner, we made a pit stop at Mirumiru Honpo Main Store. I had heard so much about their homemade gelato, crafted with fresh milk from Ishigaki-raised cows. The shop is perched on a hill, offering incredible views of the surrounding greenery and ocean.

We opted for the Half and Half option, allowing us to try two flavors at once. I chose the purple yam and brown sugar combination, which was absolutely divine. Maximilian went for the classic milk flavor, while Astrid devoured a scoop of mango. The gelato was fresh and flavorful, a perfect treat on a warm day. The sunset views are particularly stunning.

For dinner, we ventured to Umaru, a charming restaurant in the Kabira area. This cozy little place is known for its excellent food and friendly service. The owners are praised for their warmth and helpfulness, even with language barriers. Luckily, they had English menus available.

We started with the tofu salad, followed by the Ishigaki beef and seafood yakisoba. The food was absolutely delicious, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. Astrid particularly enjoyed the okonomiyaki, a savory Japanese pancake. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with adventure and exploration.

Looking Ahead

As I sit here, reflecting on our day, I can't help but feel grateful for these moments with my family. Ishigaki Island has so much to offer, and I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings. We plan to visit Taketomi Island, explore the Ibaruma Heart Rock, and discover the Blue Cave [I6]. It sounds like another day of unforgettable adventures!

And I must remember to buy insect repellent and a portable phone charger, as I forgot them in Berlin!
