Celestial Wonders and Coastal Charms

Today was a day of contrasts, blending the vastness of the universe with the intimate beauty of Ishigaki's shores. It’s amazing how much you can pack into a single day when you're driven by curiosity and a desire to soak in every experience. Astrid was particularly excited about the observatory, while Max was looking forward to some beach time. I was eager for both, plus the stunning views from the lighthouse.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Re:hellow Beach. The cafe had a laid-back vibe, and the menu featured dishes made with local vegetables, which was a delightful way to start the day. I opted for a smoothie packed with island fruits, while Max enjoyed a more traditional Japanese breakfast set. Astrid, of course, went for the pancakes, devouring them with impressive speed. Fueled up and ready, we set off for our first destination: the Ishigakijima Astronomical Observatory.

The drive to the observatory was an adventure in itself, winding up a narrow mountain road. As we climbed, the views became increasingly breathtaking, offering glimpses of the island's lush interior and the sparkling ocean beyond. The observatory sits on the peak of Mt. Maesedake, boasting the largest optical and infrared reflector telescope in Kyushu and Okinawa. I was excited to learn that Ishigaki Island is known for having some of the darkest skies in Japan, making it an ideal spot for stargazing.

At the observatory, we joined a guided tour, eager to learn about the cosmos. Although the tour was primarily in Japanese, the visuals and the sheer enthusiasm of the staff made it engaging. Astrid was mesmerized by the images of distant galaxies and nebulae, asking a flurry of questions that kept Max busy translating. I was particularly fascinated by the Murikabushi Telescope, which is used for research on solar system objects and transient astronomical events.

Sometimes, the greatest discoveries are not about finding new lands, but seeing with new eyes.

After our celestial exploration, we descended from the mountain, our minds buzzing with newfound knowledge about the universe. It was time for a change of scenery, so we headed to Shiraho Beach.

This beach is famous for its blue coral reefs, the largest in the Northern Hemisphere, and I was eager to see them up close.

Shiraho Beach is a serene and picturesque destination. The beach wasn't ideal for swimming due to the stones, but the snorkeling was incredible. We rented gear from a local operator and joined a snorkeling tour that took us out to the reef. The water was crystal clear, and the coral was teeming with life. Astrid was thrilled to spot colorful tropical fish darting among the coral formations. I was awestruck by the sheer diversity of marine life, a vibrant underwater world that felt a million miles away from our everyday lives in Berlin. Max, ever the photographer, captured some stunning underwater shots, promising to frame them when we got home.

After our snorkeling adventure, we were ready for lunch. We drove to AZZURRA.

an Italian restaurant known for its pasta. I was surprised to find such authentic Italian cuisine on a remote island in Japan, but the reviews didn't lie. The atmosphere was lovely, and the food was delicious. I had a caprese salad, while Max enjoyed a Bolognese with fresh fettuccine and Okinawa pork. Astrid, predictably, ordered pizza, which she declared to be the best she'd ever tasted.

With our bellies full, we embarked on the final leg of our day's journey: a visit to Hirakubozaki Lighthouse.

Located at the northernmost tip of Ishigaki Island, the lighthouse offers panoramic views of the coastline. The drive was scenic, passing through peaceful pastureland where Japanese cows grazed.

As we approached the lighthouse, the wind picked up, carrying the scent of the sea. The lighthouse itself is a striking white structure against the backdrop of the blue ocean and green hills. We walked around the area, taking in the breathtaking views. From the viewing platform, we could see the coastline stretching out in both directions, the waves crashing against the rocky shore. The sky was a brilliant blue, dotted with fluffy white clouds. I felt a sense of peace and tranquility, a feeling of being connected to something larger than myself.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way back to town, tired but happy. For dinner, we had reservations at Sumibi Yakiniku Takesantei.

a restaurant specializing in Ishigaki beef. I had heard so much about this local delicacy, and I couldn't wait to try it.

The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff were friendly and attentive. We ordered a selection of Ishigaki beef cuts, which were cooked over a charcoal grill right at our table. The meat was incredibly tender and flavorful, melting in my mouth with each bite. It was definitely a culinary highlight of our trip.

After dinner, we decided to check out THE STAR BAR.

located at the Fusaki Beach Resort. The bar had a laid-back vibe, and we enjoyed drinks by the poolside. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with exploration and discovery.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we are planning a visit to Dolphin Fantasy Ishigaki Island, where Astrid can interact with dolphins [Dolphin Fantasy Ishigaki Island]. We will also spend some time at Fusaki Beach and explore the Southern Gate Bridge. Before dinner at Umaru, we plan to visit Mirumiru Honpo Main Store [Mirumiru Honpo Main Store] to try some local ice cream. It promises to be another day of unforgettable experiences.

Back at our cozy accommodation, I reflected on the day's adventures. From the depths of space to the vibrant coral reefs and the panoramic views from the lighthouse, Ishigaki Island had revealed its many facets. It was a day that reminded me of the importance of curiosity, exploration, and connection – to the world around us and to each other.

As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this incredible journey with my family. Each day brings new discoveries, new experiences, and new memories to cherish. And as much as I love sharing these stories with you, dear readers, I know that these are the moments that will stay with me long after the trip is over.
