Day 9: Whispers of the Sahara: Dune Dreams and Desert Delights
Immerse yourself in the magic of the Merzouga Region. Explore Erg Chebbi's dunes, savor local cuisine, and discover nomadic treasures.
A Day Among Giants
Today was a symphony of sand and sun, a day where the vastness of the Sahara truly sunk into my soul. The experiences, tastes, and sounds created a memory I know I will treasure forever.
The day began with the familiar aroma of mint tea and freshly baked bread at Café Restaurant Les Amis. Breakfast in Merzouga is always a delightful affair, a simple pleasure that sets the tone for the adventures ahead. Fuelled up, our group, including my friends, set off to explore the legendary Dunes d'Erg Chebbi.

As a sound engineer, I was particularly excited to capture the subtle nuances of the desert soundscape. The wind, a constant companion, whispered secrets across the dunes, creating an ethereal chorus. I set up my recording equipment, hoping to preserve these fleeting moments of auditory bliss. It's a challenge, trying to capture the essence of a place through sound, but one I find incredibly rewarding.
The dunes themselves were a sight to behold. Towering giants of sand, sculpted by the relentless wind, they stretched as far as the eye could see. We decided to experience the Erg Chebbi dunes through some Merzouga desert activities.

Some of us opted for the classic camel trek, while others, feeling more adventurous, chose to rent quad bikes. I must admit, the lure of the quad bike was strong, but I decided to stick with the more traditional mode of transport. There's something deeply satisfying about traversing the desert on the back of a camel, a connection to the nomadic Berber people who have called this place home for centuries.
The desert speaks to those who know how to listen.
The camel trek was a meditative experience. The rhythmic swaying of the camel, the soft padding of its feet on the sand, and the endless expanse of dunes created a sense of tranquility that's hard to find elsewhere. I closed my eyes for a moment, letting the sounds of the desert wash over me. The wind, the distant call of a bird, and the gentle breathing of the camel – a perfect soundscape.
Later, we gathered for lunch at Restaurant Jordi & Naima.

The tagine was exquisite, a flavorful blend of spices and tender meat that warmed us from the inside out. Sharing a meal with friends in the heart of the desert is an experience I'll never forget. The laughter, the stories, and the camaraderie – these are the moments that make travel so special.
After lunch, we ventured into the town of Merzouga itself. We wanted to pick up some souvenirs and experience the local culture. Dépôt Nomade was our next stop, a shop recommended by a local we met earlier in the day.

The shop was filled with an array of traditional Moroccan crafts, from colorful textiles to intricate metalwork. Lena would have loved this place, I thought, imagining her sifting through the vibrant fabrics. I ended up buying a beautiful Berber rug, its intricate patterns telling a story of the desert and its people. I also picked up a small, hand-carved wooden bouzouki, a reminder of home and my own musical passions. Maybe I can learn some traditional Berber songs while I'm here.
As the sun began to dip below the horizon, we made our way back to our campsite. The desert at sunset is a magical place, the dunes bathed in a warm, golden light. The sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors, from fiery oranges and reds to soft pinks and purples. I set up my recording equipment once more, hoping to capture the sounds of the desert night. The silence was profound, broken only by the occasional howl of a desert fox or the crackling of our campfire.
Dinner at Cafe Restaurant Touga was a fitting end to the day.

We sat under the stars, sharing stories and laughter, the warmth of the fire chasing away the evening chill. The food was simple but delicious, traditional Moroccan fare that nourished both body and soul.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, I'm excited about the Sahara Safari adventure. I'm hoping to capture some more unique sounds and see even more of this incredible landscape. I'm also intrigued by the Morocco Tours Agency, and I'm curious to learn more about the tours they offer. Maybe we'll even stop by Kasbah Merzouga Bar for a nightcap.
As I lay in my tent, listening to the gentle sounds of the desert night, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this incredible experience. The Merzouga Region is a place of magic and wonder, a place that has captured my heart and ignited my soul. I am eager to see what tomorrow brings.
The desert has a way of stripping away the unnecessary, leaving you with only what truly matters: connection, experience, and the simple beauty of the natural world. It's a lesson I'll carry with me long after I leave this place.
I think I'll need to buy some extra batteries for my recording equipment tomorrow, as I forgot those. Also, a sand-proof phone case is a must, as I don't want to risk damaging my phone in the dunes.
Good night from the Sahara.
