A Day of Lasting Impressions

As our ten-day Kyoto adventure drew to a close, I felt a bittersweet mix of emotions. On one hand, I was excited to return to Berlin and share all our stories. On the other, I knew I would deeply miss the serene beauty and rich culture that Kyoto had offered. Today was all about soaking in those last moments, creating memories with Lena and the family that would last a lifetime.

Our day began with breakfast at Antonio, a charming little spot near our hotel. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong coffee filled the air, instantly waking us up. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, while Lena enjoyed a classic Western-style omelet. It was a comforting start, fueling us up for the day's adventures. After breakfast, we decided to head straight to Arashiyama to see the Togetsukyo Bridge. I had seen so many pictures of it, but nothing could have prepared me for its real-life beauty. The bridge gracefully arched over the Hozugawa River, with the lush mountains providing a stunning backdrop.

We took our time crossing the bridge, pausing to snap photos and simply absorb the scenery. The kids were fascinated by the boats gently gliding along the river, and Lena was in her element, capturing the perfect shots with her camera. I couldn't help but feel a sense of peace and tranquility wash over me. It was the perfect way to start our final day in Kyoto.

Next on our list was Kenninji Temple, Kyoto's oldest Zen temple. As we stepped through the gates, we were immediately transported to a world of calm and contemplation. The temple grounds were meticulously maintained, with perfectly raked gravel gardens and ancient trees that seemed to whisper stories of centuries past. We wandered through the various halls and gardens, taking in the intricate details of the architecture and the serene atmosphere. The highlight for me was the stunning twin dragon painting on the ceiling of the Dharma Hall. Its sheer scale and artistry were breathtaking.

Lena and I took a moment to sit in one of the gardens, simply enjoying the silence and the beauty around us. It was a perfect opportunity to reflect on our journey and appreciate all the incredible experiences we had shared. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for being able to experience such a unique and beautiful place with my family.

After a morning steeped in history and tranquility, we decided to switch gears and embrace something a bit more modern: the Kyoto International Manga Museum. I must admit, I was initially a bit skeptical. I appreciate art, but manga wasn't exactly my forte. However, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. The museum was housed in a former elementary school, which added to its quirky charm.

Inside, we discovered a vast collection of manga, from classic titles to contemporary works. The kids were in heaven, poring over their favorite characters and discovering new ones. Lena, with her graphic design background, was fascinated by the artistry and storytelling techniques used in manga. Even I found myself drawn in, appreciating the creativity and imagination on display.

We spent a good few hours at the museum, exploring the different exhibits and even trying our hand at drawing our own manga characters. It was a fun and lighthearted experience, a perfect contrast to the more serious historical sites we had visited earlier in the trip. By the time we left, we were all manga converts, eager to delve deeper into this unique art form.

Sometimes, the most unexpected experiences become the most cherished memories.

As evening approached, we made our way to Fujiya for lunch. We wanted to have a restaurant that would be memorable to everyone. The restaurant was fantastic, the kids enjoyed the ramen, while Lena and I enjoyed some sake. After lunch, we decided to walk around Gion. It was our last chance to soak in the atmosphere of Kyoto's geisha district. The sun was beginning to set, casting a golden glow over the traditional wooden machiya houses. We strolled along the narrow streets, hoping to catch a glimpse of a geiko or maiko gracefully making her way to an appointment. While we didn't spot any geisha, the atmosphere alone was magical.

For our final dinner in Kyoto, we chose Nishikawa, a restaurant recommended by a local friend. The restaurant was tucked away in a quiet alley, exuding an air of understated elegance. We were seated at a traditional tatami mat table, and the staff were incredibly welcoming and attentive. The meal was a culinary masterpiece, a multi-course kaiseki dinner that showcased the best of Kyoto's seasonal ingredients. Each dish was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor.

From delicate sashimi to savory grilled fish and fragrant vegetable dishes, every bite was a delight. It was the perfect way to end our culinary journey through Kyoto. After dinner, we decided to indulge in one last Kyoto experience: a visit to Bar K6. Located in the heart of the city, this stylish bar was known for its expertly crafted cocktails and sophisticated ambiance. I ordered a classic Old Fashioned, while Lena opted for a more adventurous sake-based concoction. We sipped our drinks, reflecting on our incredible trip and making plans for future adventures. It was the perfect way to toast to our time in Kyoto.
