Finding Gems in the Blue City

Today in Chefchaouen was all about soaking in the local culture and enjoying the simple pleasures of this beautiful blue city. Lena and I started our day with a hearty breakfast and ended it with a delicious dinner, with plenty of exploration in between. It's days like these that remind me why we love to travel – the chance to discover hidden gems and create lasting memories together.

Our morning began at BILMOS, a charming spot known for its vegan-friendly options. As someone who appreciates a good, healthy meal, I was excited to try their offerings. Lena opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast, while I chose a vegan bowl filled with fresh, local vegetables. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring. The staff were incredibly friendly, and the atmosphere was buzzing with locals and tourists alike. It's always a good sign when a place is popular with both crowds.

After breakfast, we made our way to the Kasbah, a historic fortress that has stood for centuries. The Kasbah was built in 1471 by Moulay Ali Ben Moussa Ben Rached El Alami, designed to protect the city from invaders. Wandering through its walls, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe at the history contained within. The architecture was stunning, and the views of Chefchaouen's blue-washed buildings were simply breathtaking. Lena, with her keen eye for design, was particularly captivated by the intricate details of the fortress. We spent a good couple of hours exploring every nook and cranny, taking photos and imagining what life must have been like back in the day.

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning you never thought to ask.

Inside the Kasbah, we visited the Ethnographic Museum, which offered a fascinating glimpse into the local culture and history. The museum had an interesting display of cultural and artistic objects—dresses, musical instruments and weapons―that paint a picture of the history of Chefchaouen and Northern Morocco. As someone who grew up surrounded by the rich history of Cyprus, I always appreciate the opportunity to learn about other cultures and their traditions. Lena, being a graphic designer, was particularly interested in the traditional clothing and textiles on display.

Next on our list was Park Sidi Abdelhamid, a tranquil oasis just a short walk from the bustling medina. As we entered the park, we were immediately struck by the serenity of the place. Lush greenery, colorful flowers, and the gentle sound of water flowing created a peaceful atmosphere that was a welcome escape from the summer heat. We found a shaded bench and sat down to relax, taking in the natural beauty that surrounded us. The park offered stunning viewpoints. It was the perfect spot to unwind and recharge before continuing our exploration of Chefchaouen. It was so relaxing to just sit there and enjoy the peace and quiet, away from the hustle and bustle of the medina.

In the afternoon, we decided to indulge in some retail therapy at CHAOUEN GIFTS. This charming shop is known for its collection of local artisanal products, from handwoven textiles to beautifully crafted pottery. As we stepped inside, we were greeted by a riot of colors and textures. The shop’s staff were incredibly welcoming, eager to share the history and significance of the items on display. Lena, always on the lookout for unique souvenirs, spent ages browsing through the various offerings. I ended up buying a beautifully crafted ceramic bowl, which I plan to use for serving Cypriot dishes back home in Berlin. It’s a little piece of Chefchaouen that I can bring back with me.

For lunch, we ventured to Restaurant populaire, a local eatery recommended by several people we met along the way. The restaurant was simple and unassuming, but the food was absolutely delicious. We ordered a tagine and some couscous, both of which were bursting with flavor. It was exactly the kind of authentic Moroccan meal we were hoping for. The prices were also incredibly reasonable, making it a great value for money. Eating at Restaurant populaire felt like experiencing the real Chefchaouen, away from the tourist traps.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Restaurant blue dream for dinner. This place had been on my radar because of its reputation for live music and a cozy atmosphere. We were not disappointed. As we sat down, a local band was just starting to play traditional Moroccan music. The food was also excellent. I ordered a soup, and Lena tried the tagine. The service was friendly, and the overall vibe of the restaurant was warm and inviting. It was the perfect way to end our day in Chefchaouen. The restaurant had a warm family environment and enticing interior design.

Looking back on the day, I feel incredibly grateful for the experiences we had. Chefchaouen has a way of capturing your heart with its beauty and charm. From exploring the historic Kasbah to relaxing in Park Sidi Abdelhamid and savoring the local cuisine, every moment was special. Lena and I created memories that we will cherish for a lifetime.

Tomorrow is our last day in Chefchaouen, and we plan to make the most of it by hiking to Jebel El-Kelaa Summit. I’m excited to see the panoramic views from the top and soak in the last bit of Moroccan sunshine before we head back to Berlin. I'm already looking forward to sharing more stories and photos from our final day in this enchanting blue city.

Even though I forgot my travel pillow, the comfy bed at Hotel Casa Miguel made for a great night's sleep. It's a good thing I remembered my camera though, or I wouldn't have been able to capture the beauty of Chefchaouen!

Back in Berlin, I'll be sure to try and recreate some of the amazing dishes we've had here. Maybe I'll even try my hand at making tagine, using the ceramic bowl I bought today. Until then, I'll keep dreaming of the blue streets of Chefchaouen and the warmth of the Moroccan sun. I am so glad that Lena and I decided to come here.

I can't wait to see what adventures tomorrow brings. After our hike, we'll be sure to grab some lunch at Restaurant Jbaria and dinner at Restaurant Lalla Messaouda. It's going to be a busy day, but I'm excited to make the most of our last moments in this magical place. It's been an incredible journey, and I'm so grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of Morocco with my amazing wife, Lena.

As I reflect on our time here, I realize that travel is not just about seeing new places, but also about connecting with new people and cultures. Chefchaouen has taught me so much about the beauty of simplicity and the importance of slowing down and appreciating the moment. I hope that our journey inspires you to embark on your own adventures and discover the magic that awaits you in every corner of the world.

And so, with a heart full of gratitude and a camera full of memories, I bid you goodnight from the blue pearl of Morocco. Until tomorrow!
