Exploring the Blue Pearl of Morocco: A Journey to Chefchaouen
Day 7: A Friday Stroll Through Chefchaouen: Discovering Hidden Gems and Artistic Treasures
Exploring Chefchaouen's Bab El Ain, medina tours, local shops, and savoring Moroccan cuisine made for a perfect Friday in the Blue Pearl.
Blue Hues and Hidden Views
Today was a day of wandering, a day of getting lost in the blue labyrinth of Chefchaouen, and I couldn't have asked for anything better. Lena and I set out with no particular agenda, just a desire to soak in the atmosphere and see where the winding streets would lead us. It turned out to be a day filled with unexpected discoveries and delightful encounters.
The July sun was already warming the sky as we started our day, a typical summer day here in Chefchaouen, with highs around 30°C, making lightweight clothing a must. After grabbing our essentials – camera, sunscreen, and of course, our trusty travel guidebook – we were ready to embrace the day.
Our first stop was Bab El Ain. It wasn't just a historical landmark; it was a gateway to a different perspective of the city. I've always been drawn to places where history whispers through the stones, and Bab El Ain was no exception. As we approached, the views of the Rif Mountains in the background was simply breathtaking, adding to the allure of this spot. The intricate designs of the structure told stories of the artisans who shaped this city. We took our time, snapping photos and simply enjoying the serene atmosphere. I even managed to capture a few shots with the mountains perfectly framed in the background – photos that I know will become some of my favorites from this trip.

The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not just in its blue walls, but in the vibrant life that thrives within them.
Next, we decided to join one of the Blue Medina Tours. I'm usually a bit skeptical about guided tours, preferring to explore at my own pace, but this turned out to be a fantastic decision. Our guide, whose name I unfortunately can't recall, was a local who grew up in the medina. He shared stories and insights that no guidebook could ever provide. He led us through hidden alleyways, pointed out architectural details we would have missed, and explained the history and culture of Chefchaouen in a way that was both informative and engaging. Lena, who is always keen to learn about local customs, was particularly fascinated by the stories he shared about the traditions of the Chaouen people.

By lunchtime, our stomachs were rumbling, so we headed to Assaada for breakfast. This place came highly recommended, and it didn't disappoint. We sat outside, soaking in the morning sun and enjoying a traditional Moroccan breakfast. I opted for the kefta tagine, while Lena went for the sardine dish. The flavors were incredible, a perfect blend of spices and fresh ingredients. It was the perfect way to fuel up for the rest of our day.

After breakfast, we decided to do some shopping. Lena had been wanting to pick up some local crafts, and I was on the hunt for a unique piece of art to bring back to Berlin. We stumbled upon B & H Art Shop, a small store tucked away in a quiet corner of the medina. The shop was filled with handmade garments, each one a testament to the skill and artistry of local artisans. I ended up buying a beautiful, hand-painted canvas depicting a traditional Moroccan scene. Lena found a gorgeous, hand-woven scarf that she absolutely loved. The shop owner was incredibly friendly and shared the stories behind each piece, making the experience even more special.

For lunch, we chose Restaurant Ali Baba. The reviews were mixed, but we decided to give it a try, and I'm glad we did. We shared a vegetable tagine and some Moroccan salads. The food was flavorful, and the atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. While it wasn't the best meal we've had in Chefchaouen, it was certainly enjoyable, and the prices were reasonable. I had read some reviews mentioning the staff being pleasant, and I must agree, they were very attentive and made us feel right at home.

As the afternoon wore on, we continued our exploration of the medina, getting delightfully lost in its maze-like streets. Every corner turned revealed a new photo opportunity, a new shade of blue, a new detail to admire. We stumbled upon hidden courtyards, bustling marketplaces, and quiet corners where locals were simply going about their day. It was these moments, these glimpses into everyday life, that made the experience so authentic and memorable.
Before dinner, we found ourselves back at Bab El Ain, drawn by the promise of a different perspective as the sun began to set. The golden light cast a warm glow over the blue buildings, creating a magical atmosphere. We sat on a bench, watching as the city slowly transformed from day to night. The air was filled with the sounds of children playing, the calls of vendors, and the gentle murmur of conversations – a symphony of everyday life in Chefchaouen.
Dinner was at Restaurant Morisco. We had heard great things about their Moroccan and Mediterranean cuisine, and we were eager to try it out. We started with some Moroccan salads, followed by a lamb tagine for me and a vegetarian couscous for Lena. The food was delicious, the service was excellent, and the atmosphere was lively and welcoming. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploration.

As we walked back to Hotel Casa Miguel, the medina was bathed in the soft glow of streetlights. The air was cool and crisp, a welcome contrast to the heat of the day. We held hands, savoring the moment, grateful for the experiences we had shared. Chefchaouen had truly captured our hearts.

Tomorrow, we're planning a trip to Akchour, a natural paradise just outside of Chefchaouen. I've heard that the waterfalls and hiking trails are incredible, and I'm excited to explore a different side of this region. Lena is particularly looking forward to spending some time in nature, away from the hustle and bustle of the medina.
But for now, I'm content to simply reflect on the day, to relive the moments of discovery and delight that made it so special. Chefchaouen, with its blue walls and hidden views, had once again worked its magic. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
I'm also thinking of my parents back in Pano Lefkara. They would absolutely adore Chefchaouen, with its similar laid-back vibe and strong sense of community. I should definitely plan a trip for them sometime soon. They would love wandering through the medina, discovering hidden gems and soaking in the atmosphere.
Until tomorrow,
Giorgos
P.S. I almost forgot to mention! There seems to be some local festival going on. I couldn't find much information about it, but I did hear that the Alegria Chamalia Festival is happening in Chefchaouen around this time, which is organised by local NGOs and focuses on local heritage. It seemed to add an extra layer of vibrancy to the city, and it was great to see the community coming together to celebrate their culture.
I'm also thinking about my work back in Berlin. It's been great to disconnect for a while, but I know I'll need to get back to coding soon. Maybe I can find some inspiration in the blue hues of Chefchaouen to bring back to my projects. Who knows, maybe I'll even create a blue-themed website!
