Immerse yourself in the spiritual heart of Kumano Kodo with ancient shrines, scenic trails, and delightful local cuisine. A day of reflection and discovery.
Pilgrimage to New Heights
Today was a day of deep exploration, both physical and spiritual, as I continued my solo journey along the Kumano Kodo. The path led me to ancient shrines, through serene mountain trails, and offered a taste of the local flavors that make this region so unique. It was a day of reflection, connection, and appreciation for the rich cultural tapestry of Japan.
The morning started with a hearty breakfast at Tororoya. I fueled up with a traditional Japanese breakfast, setting the tone for a day filled with exploration. The cozy atmosphere of the restaurant was the perfect way to begin, and I savored every bite, knowing I needed the energy for the day's adventures.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set out towards Kumano-Nachi Taisha Grand Shrine Hall of Worship. The bus ride itself was a treat, winding through lush greenery and offering glimpses of the picturesque countryside. As I approached the shrine, I could feel the weight of history and spirituality that permeated the air.

The shrine was magnificent, a testament to centuries of devotion and architectural skill. The vibrant vermillion hues stood out against the backdrop of the green landscape, creating a striking visual contrast. I took my time wandering through the grounds, admiring the intricate carvings and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. I made an offering, tied an omikuji to a sacred tree, and felt a sense of connection to the generations of pilgrims who had come before me.
The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and today, every step felt like a deeper immersion into the soul of Kumano Kodo. After exploring the main hall, I ventured towards the Kumano-Kodo Shimizu-toge Pass. The trail was a welcome challenge, a chance to stretch my legs and immerse myself in the natural beauty of the Kii Mountains. The air was fresh and clean, and the sounds of nature filled my ears. I passed ancient cedar trees, crossed small streams, and marveled at the panoramic views from the mountain ridge.

The hike was invigorating, a reminder of the simple joys of putting one foot in front of the other and connecting with the earth. I felt a sense of accomplishment as I reached the summit, knowing I had pushed myself both physically and mentally. The views from the top were breathtaking, a reward for the effort.
As the day wore on, I made my way to Kakinoate for a well-deserved lunch. I savored a local specialty, a dish that captured the essence of the region's culinary traditions. The flavors were simple yet satisfying, a testament to the quality of the ingredients and the skill of the chef.

In the afternoon, I indulged in a bit of shopping at Moudemochi. I picked up some of the famous Moudemochi rice cakes, a local delicacy that I had heard so much about. The shop was charming, and the staff were friendly and eager to share their knowledge of the sweets. I couldn't resist trying a few samples, and I was immediately hooked. The mochi was soft and delicate, with a subtle sweetness that lingered on my tongue.

For dinner, I decided to treat myself to a steak at Hinoki Steak House. The restaurant had a classic, old-school charm, and the aroma of grilled meat filled the air. I ordered a Kumano beef steak, cooked to perfection, and savored every bite. The steak was tender and juicy, with a rich, savory flavor that was simply divine. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and adventure.

As I reflect on the day, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and spirituality of Kumano Kodo. The ancient shrines, the scenic trails, and the delicious cuisine have all combined to create an unforgettable journey. I am eager to see what tomorrow brings, as I continue my solo pilgrimage along this sacred path.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Kumano-Kodo Ohechi Pilgrimage Route - Hokoritake-no-gunraku Colony and Third Place Kumano Kodo. I'm also looking forward to trying the local eateries, including Yorozuya Eatery for breakfast, Yunomine Onsen Shop/Dining Hall for lunch, and Kumano Kodo Omotenashi-Kan for dinner. And perhaps, I'll unwind at Why Kumano, a local bar.
The weather in Kumano Kodo in August is typically warm and humid, with temperatures ranging from 81°F to 85°F. It's also prone to rain, so it's essential to be prepared with rain gear. Despite the weather, the lush greenery and verdant landscapes make it a beautiful time to visit.
A few things to keep in mind while exploring Kumano Kodo: be prepared for some steep climbs and uneven terrain, wear comfortable hiking shoes, and bring plenty of water. It's also important to respect the local customs and traditions, such as removing your shoes before entering temples and shrines.
As I settle in for the night, I can't help but feel a sense of peace and contentment. The Kumano Kodo has a way of stripping away the distractions of modern life and connecting you to something deeper. I am grateful for this experience, and I look forward to continuing my journey tomorrow.
I am also mindful of the typhoon season in August and September in Japan, so I'll be keeping an eye on the weather forecast and being prepared for any potential disruptions to my travel plans.
I must admit, I wish Lena was here to experience this with me. I know she would appreciate the history, the culture, and the natural beauty of this place. Perhaps we can come back together someday and share this journey. For now, I'll continue to document my experiences and share them with her and all of you.
Until tomorrow, safe travels and may your own journeys be filled with discovery and wonder!
P.S. I almost forgot to mention that I was so engrossed in the day's activities that I completely forgot to buy a portable charger and a rain poncho! I'll have to make sure to pick those up tomorrow, as they are essential for the rest of my pilgrimage.
