Lost in the Blue Medina

Today was a day of complete immersion in the enchanting blue world of Chefchaouen. It's remarkable how a single color can define a place, shaping its atmosphere and imbuing it with a sense of calm and wonder. Jean-Pierre and I set out early, eager to lose ourselves in the labyrinthine streets and discover the hidden gems of this Moroccan jewel.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Café & restaurant Meftah. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and warm Moroccan bread filled the air, instantly awakening our senses. I opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast of msemen, a flaky pancake served with honey and cheese, while Jean-Pierre enjoyed a hearty omelet. The café's friendly staff and the stunning view of the town from the terrace made it the perfect start to our day.

With our appetites satisfied, we ventured into the heart of Chefchaouen, Plaza Uta el Hamman. The square was already buzzing with activity, locals going about their daily routines, and tourists snapping photos of the iconic blue buildings. The air was filled with the sounds of chatter, music, and the tantalizing scents of Moroccan cuisine. We paused for a moment, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere and marveling at the beauty that surrounded us.

Wandering through Chefchaouen is like stepping into a dream, where every corner reveals a new shade of blue and a deeper sense of tranquility.

Next on our itinerary was a guided tour with Blue Medina Tours. I was initially hesitant, typically preferring to explore at our own pace, but I am so glad we decided to join. Our guide, Hassan, was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about Chefchaouen's history and culture. He led us through the maze-like streets, sharing fascinating stories and anecdotes along the way. I learned that the blue color was originally introduced by Jewish refugees in the 1930s, who believed it symbolized the sky and reminded them of God. Over time, the tradition spread throughout the town, and now it is what defines Chefchaouen's unique character.

Hassan also took us to some of the hidden gems of the Medina, places we never would have found on our own. We visited a local bakery where we sampled freshly baked bread, a traditional hammam where we learned about the ritual of Moroccan bathing, and a hidden courtyard with a stunning mosaic fountain. It was an immersive and unforgettable experience that gave us a deeper understanding of Chefchaouen's culture and history.

After our tour, Jean-Pierre and I decided to indulge in some retail therapy at Chefchaouen crafts. The medina is a shopper's paradise, with countless shops and stalls selling everything from handwoven carpets and leather goods to spices and argan oil. I was particularly drawn to the blue pottery, a local specialty. I purchased a beautiful hand-painted bowl as a souvenir, while Jean-Pierre haggled for a leather belt. It's always a bit of a game, the haggling, but it's part of the fun and the vendors are always good-natured.

For lunch, we stopped at Assaada, a charming restaurant recommended by Hassan. The restaurant was tucked away in a quiet alley, away from the hustle and bustle of the main square. We ordered a tagine, a traditional Moroccan stew cooked in a conical clay pot. The aroma alone was enough to make my mouth water. The tagine was a flavorful combination of chicken, vegetables, and spices, served with couscous. It was the perfect fuel for our afternoon adventures.

As we strolled, I found myself reflecting on my own heritage. Growing up in Arezzo, Italy, I was surrounded by the beauty of Renaissance art and architecture. But there's something uniquely captivating about Chefchaouen's blue streets. It's not just the color itself, but the way it interacts with the light, creating a sense of ethereal beauty. It reminded me of the blue skies of Tuscany, but with a Moroccan twist.

In the late afternoon, we found ourselves back at Plaza Uta el Hamman, drawn by the lively atmosphere. We sat at a café, sipping mint tea and watching the world go by. The square was even more vibrant than before, with street performers entertaining the crowds and families enjoying the cool evening air. I even spotted a man with a monkey, a sight that always brings a smile to my face, though I do worry about the animal's well-being.

As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the blue buildings, we made our way to Restaurant Ali Baba for dinner. The restaurant had a lovely terrace with panoramic views of the town. We ordered a selection of Moroccan dishes, including harira soup, grilled meats, and a variety of salads. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploration.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're planning a hike in Parc National de Talassemtane and a visit to Jebel El-Kelaa Summit. I'm eager to experience the natural beauty of the region and escape the confines of the town for a while. I am also looking forward to trying Cremeri Elmaataoui for breakfast, Restaurant Al Wiam for lunch and Chez Foad for dinner. I am hoping Jean-Pierre will indulge me in a visit to Restaurant Bar Chaouen, as well!

As I sit here now, writing in my travel journal, I can't help but feel grateful for this incredible experience. Chefchaouen is a place that will stay with me long after I leave. It's a place of beauty, culture, and tranquility, a place that nourishes the soul and awakens the senses. I highly recommend adding it to your travel list. And who knows, maybe one day I'll even convince Jean-Pierre to paint our house blue!

Tomorrow, we venture into the surrounding natural beauty, a change of pace I am very much looking forward to.
