Discover Chefchaouen's charm as we explore Bab El Ain, Place El Haouta, and savor local cuisine, creating unforgettable memories in Morocco.
Wandering Through Chefchaouen's Heart
Today in Chefchaouen felt like stepping deeper into a dream. After four days of soaking in the blue hues and the Rif Mountain air, Jean-Pierre and I were ready to explore some of the town’s hidden corners and savour its local flavours. It’s amazing how a place can feel both familiar and endlessly surprising at the same time.
Our day began, as it often does, with the promise of good food. We headed to Toda Creperie & Ice Cream for breakfast. The thought of a sweet start to the day was too tempting to resist. The cafe was cozy, filled with the aroma of freshly made crepes and strong Moroccan coffee. I opted for a classic crepe with Nutella and strawberries, while Jean-Pierre, ever the traditionalist, chose one with local honey and almonds. The combination of the warm crepe, sweet toppings, and the bustling morning atmosphere was the perfect way to kick off our explorations. It reminded me of our breakfasts in Italy, where simple pleasures often make the most lasting memories.

With our appetites satisfied, we set out to explore Bab El Ain. As we approached, the historical landmark stood proudly, a testament to Chefchaouen’s rich cultural tapestry. The gateway itself is an architectural marvel, inviting us to step further into the heart of this charming town. As we strolled through the narrow, winding streets, we encountered a plethora of local artisans, shops, and eateries, each contributing to the vibrant atmosphere of Chefchaouen. The inviting ambiance and stunning scenery made Bab El Ain not just a historical site, but a cultural hub that reflects the spirit of Chefchaouen.

I couldn't help but think of my work back in Montreal, surrounded by books and historical documents. Here, history was alive, etched into the very walls and streets around us. Jean-Pierre, ever the architect, was captivated by the intricate details of the archway, snapping photos from every possible angle. We wandered through the narrow, winding streets, soaking in the atmosphere and admiring the craftsmanship on display. It was a sensory feast – the vibrant colours, the scent of spices, and the sounds of daily life unfolding around us.
The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in how those places change you.
Next on our list was Place El Haouta, a picturesque square known for its unique architecture and charming ambiance. The square is adorned with blue-tiled buildings featuring classic arches and iron grills, creating a delightful and distinctive atmosphere. The beautifully patterned and cobbled floor added to its allure. At the heart of the square, a four-sided fountain provided locals with refreshing drinking water, contributing to the lively and communal spirit.

We found a quiet bench and simply watched the world go by. Locals chatted, children played, and the square buzzed with a gentle energy. Jean-Pierre, ever the social butterfly, struck up a conversation with a local artist who was sketching the scene. I took the opportunity to sketch in my travel journal, trying to capture the essence of the square in ink and watercolour. It’s moments like these, away from the crowds and the guidebooks, that truly make a trip special.
Lunchtime arrived, and we were eager to try MIDO'S, a restaurant recommended for its tasty and friendly service. The owner/waiter was extremely sympathetic and just so nice to talk to. We talked about how they would like to make the milkshakes vegan but that vegan milk is only available to buy too far away. I chose a falafel salad, while Jean-Pierre opted for a Mido’s burger. The food was simple but delicious, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It felt like a true taste of local life, far removed from the tourist traps.

After lunch, we couldn't resist indulging in a bit of shopping at CHAOUEN GIFTS. I was on the hunt for a special memento to bring back to Sofia, while Jean-Pierre was looking for a new scarf to add to his collection. The shop was a treasure trove of local crafts, from colourful ceramics to intricate textiles. I finally settled on a beautiful hand-painted bowl for Sofia, hoping it would remind her of our adventures in Morocco. Jean-Pierre, after much deliberation, chose a vibrant blue scarf that perfectly matched the city’s aesthetic. I'm not much of a shopper usually, but I do love finding little trinkets to bring back home that remind me of our travels.

As the afternoon wore on, we decided to simply wander through the medina, letting our curiosity guide us. We stumbled upon hidden courtyards, vibrant alleyways, and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. I found myself drawn to the intricate details of the architecture, the way the sunlight played on the blue walls, and the sense of history that permeated every corner of the city. Jean-Pierre, with his keen eye for detail, was constantly pointing out interesting architectural features and sharing stories about the city’s past.
For dinner, we chose Restaurant Lalla Messaouda, known for its Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. We decided to try a traditional tagine, filled with tender meat, vegetables, and aromatic spices. It was a culinary masterpiece, a true reflection of the region’s rich culinary heritage. As we savoured each bite, we reflected on the day’s adventures, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience the magic of Chefchaouen together. The restaurant is well-regarded, and we were not disappointed.

As we walked back to Maison D'hôtes Afassi, the city was bathed in the soft glow of the evening lights. The air was cool and crisp, and the sounds of the city had mellowed into a gentle hum. We held hands, feeling a deep sense of connection and contentment. Days like these are what travel is all about – the simple pleasures, the unexpected discoveries, and the shared experiences that create lasting memories. Reflecting on the day, I realized that Chefchaouen wasn't just a place to see; it was a place to feel, to experience, and to connect with on a deeper level.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Place Mohammed V and Bab Chaouen, and perhaps enjoy a drink at The Magic Lamp House of Aladin. I am looking forward to more adventures in this magical blue city. Perhaps we’ll find a few more treasures to bring back to Montreal. For now, though, I’m content to simply soak in the beauty and serenity of Chefchaouen, knowing that these memories will stay with me long after we’ve left.
In the meantime, I need to remember to buy a reusable water bottle and a travel journal. I keep forgetting those essentials!
