A Fond Farewell to Chefchaouen

As our journey through the enchanting Chefchaouen region draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the kaleidoscope of experiences that have coloured our days. From the labyrinthine blue streets to the warm smiles of the locals, every moment has been a vibrant tapestry woven into the fabric of our memories. Today, our final day, was a culmination of exploration, reflection, and a deep appreciation for this unique Moroccan gem.

Our final day began, as many others had, with a delightful breakfast at Toda Creperie & Ice Cream. The aroma of freshly made crepes and the promise of artisanal ice cream was the perfect way to start the day. I opted for a classic Nutella crepe, while Jean-Pierre, ever the traditionalist, chose a savory ham and cheese. The vibrant blue hues of Chefchaouen served as a stunning backdrop as we enjoyed our meal outdoors. It was a sweet escape into Moroccan culinary delights.

With our appetites sated, we set out to explore Bab el Hermoun, one of Chefchaouen's significant historical landmarks. As we approached, the gate's intricate designs and weathered stone seemed to whisper tales of centuries past. I couldn't help but imagine the countless travelers who had passed through this very gate, each with their own stories and dreams. The soft morning light cast a warm glow on the gate, enhancing its beauty and creating perfect photo opportunities. Jean-Pierre, with his architect's eye, was particularly fascinated by the blend of Berber and Moorish influences in the architecture.

As we wandered through the narrow streets surrounding Bab el Hermoun, we discovered charming artisan shops and local eateries. The area offered a peaceful retreat from the more crowded tourist spots, making it an ideal location for those seeking a quieter experience. I picked up a few small souvenirs, hand-crafted trinkets that I knew would remind me of this magical place long after we had returned to Montreal. We also chatted with some local artisans, gaining a deeper appreciation for the town's heritage and craftsmanship.

Next on our itinerary was a visit to the intriguing المتحف الحربي لشفشاون (Chefchaouen War Museum). While neither Jean-Pierre nor I are particularly drawn to military history, we were curious to learn more about the region's past. The museum offered a glimpse into the military history of the area, showcasing artifacts and exhibits that told stories of battles and conflicts. It was a sobering reminder of the struggles and sacrifices that have shaped this region.

For lunch, we decided to try BILMOS, a restaurant known for its fusion of Moroccan and Italian cuisines. This seemed like a perfect fit, given my Italian heritage and Jean-Pierre's love for Moroccan flavors. The restaurant had a relaxed atmosphere with a small outdoor seating area, so we enjoyed our meal in the sun. I chose a pasta dish with a Moroccan twist, while Jean-Pierre opted for a traditional tagine. It was a delightful culinary experience, blending the best of both worlds.

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning, you didn't even think to ask.

In the late afternoon, as the sun began to dip below the horizon, we found ourselves at Restaurant Terrasse Djebli. This spot is renowned for its stunning views of the Rif Mountains and its traditional Moroccan dishes. We settled onto the terrace, soaking in the breathtaking panorama as the warm hues of the setting sun painted the sky. The gentle sounds of local music filled the air, adding to the magical ambiance.

For our final dinner in Chefchaouen, we chose Restaurant Morisco, a place known for its local specialties and lively atmosphere. We sat on the terrace, watching the passers-by and enjoying the vibrant energy of Outa El Hammam square. I decided to try the ftour beldi, a local breakfast dish of goat's cheese, eggs, and olive oil, while Jean-Pierre savored a perfectly cooked tagine. The flavors were rich and authentic, a fitting end to our culinary explorations.

As the evening drew to a close, we made our way to Restaurant Terrasse Djebli for a final nightcap. Sipping on mint tea under the starlit sky, we reminisced about our adventures in Chefchaouen. We talked about the kindness of the people, the beauty of the blue-washed streets, and the deliciousness of the food. It was a perfect ending to a perfect trip.

Reflecting on our time here, I am reminded of the importance of embracing new cultures and experiences. Chefchaouen has not only offered us stunning visuals and culinary delights but also a deeper understanding of Moroccan hospitality and traditions. I am grateful for the opportunity to have shared this journey with my beloved Jean-Pierre, whose adventurous spirit and keen eye for detail have enriched every moment.

As we prepare to leave this enchanting blue city, I carry with me a sense of peace and inspiration. The memories we have made here will undoubtedly stay with us for years to come, reminding us of the beauty that exists in the world and the importance of cultural exchange. Until next time, Chefchaouen, goodbye and thank you for the memories.

Tomorrow, we embark on our journey back to Montreal, filled with stories and souvenirs to share with Sofia and our friends. While I am eager to return to the familiar comforts of home, a part of me will always remain in the blue-washed streets of Chefchaouen.

This trip has been a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with Jean-Pierre and to immerse ourselves in a culture that is both different and familiar. As a librarian specializing in Italian-Canadian history, I am always fascinated by the ways in which cultures intersect and influence one another. Chefchaouen, with its blend of Berber, Moorish, and Andalusian influences, is a perfect example of this cultural fusion.

I hope that my blog posts have inspired you to consider visiting Chefchaouen and experiencing its magic for yourself. It is a destination that truly nourishes the soul and awakens the senses. And who knows, perhaps our paths will cross in another corner of the world someday. Until then, arrivederci and au revoir!

As I close this chapter of our Moroccan adventure, I am already dreaming of our next journey. Perhaps we will explore the ancient ruins of Rome, or wander through the lavender fields of Provence. Wherever we go, I know that we will continue to seek out authentic experiences and to share our stories with the world.

Thank you for joining us on this unforgettable journey. Your comments and messages have been a source of inspiration and encouragement. Until next time, happy travels!
