Gates of Wonder and Culinary Delights

Today was all about soaking in the last moments of Chefchaouen’s unique charm. With only one day left, Jean-Pierre and I set out to explore more of what this blue city had to offer, focusing on its historic gates and the delightful experiences tucked away in its vibrant streets. It’s hard to believe our journey here is almost at an end, but we're determined to make the most of every moment.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Patisserie Pain Chaouen. The aroma of freshly baked croissants and the promise of strong coffee was the perfect start. This charming patisserie, recommended by several locals, didn't disappoint. The croissants were flaky and buttery, and the coffee was just what we needed to kickstart our explorations. We sat outside, watching the town slowly wake up, a truly peaceful way to begin the day.

“Sometimes, the most memorable experiences are found in the simple moments, like a shared meal or a quiet walk through a historic gateway.”

After breakfast, we decided to explore two of Chefchaouen's notable gates: Bab El Hammar and Bab el Mahrouk. These gates, remnants of the city's historic fortifications, offered a glimpse into its past. As we walked towards Bab El Hammar, the blue-washed buildings seemed to glow in the morning light. Bab El Hammar itself was a simple yet striking structure, a reminder of the city's history and resilience. We paused there, imagining the countless people who had passed through it over the centuries.

Next, we made our way to Bab el Mahrouk. This gate, with its distinctive arch, was equally impressive. I couldn't help but think of the stories these walls could tell. Jean-Pierre, ever the architect, was fascinated by the intricate details of the stonework. These gates are not just entryways; they are historical landmarks that frame the city's rich heritage. We took our time, appreciating the architecture and the sense of stepping back in time.

For lunch, we chose Restaurant Triana, enticed by its reputation for blending Italian and Mediterranean cuisines. As someone with Italian roots, I was eager to see how Moroccan chefs interpreted these familiar flavors. The restaurant had a lovely ambiance, with colorful mosaics and a relaxed atmosphere. Jean-Pierre opted for the seafood salad, while I decided on the lamb tagine, a Moroccan staple. Both dishes were delicious, a testament to the restaurant's commitment to quality and flavor. The lamb was tender and aromatic, and Jean-Pierre raved about the freshness of his seafood. We lingered over our meal, enjoying the views and the gentle breeze.

In the afternoon, with our bellies full and our spirits high, we ventured into Jabir shop chefchaouen. I was on the hunt for some unique souvenirs to bring back home. This shop was a treasure trove of locally crafted items, from woven textiles to intricate ceramics. The owner was incredibly welcoming, sharing stories about the artisans and their craft. I found a beautiful hand-painted bowl that I knew would look perfect in our Montreal kitchen, a little piece of Chefchaouen to remind us of our travels. Jean-Pierre, meanwhile, picked out a vibrant scarf made of silk for Sofia.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Chez Hicham for dinner. This restaurant, known for its Moroccan cuisine, offered a cozy setting for our final evening meal in Chefchaouen. We started with Moroccan salads, a colorful mix of fresh vegetables and aromatic herbs. For our main courses, Jean-Pierre chose the grilled lamb, while I opted for the chicken tagine with lemon. The flavors were rich and authentic, a perfect representation of Moroccan culinary traditions. The atmosphere was relaxed and convivial, and we felt a sense of contentment as we savored each bite.

Reflecting on our day, I realized how much we had absorbed in such a short time. Chefchaouen is more than just a pretty blue town; it’s a place with a vibrant culture, a rich history, and incredibly warm people. As we prepare to leave tomorrow, I know we will carry these memories with us, a reminder of the beauty and diversity of our world. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Bab el Hermoun and المتحف الحربي لشفشاون before heading back to Tangier. I am looking forward to our last day in this amazing country.

“Travel is not just about seeing new places, but about experiencing new cultures and connecting with the people who call them home.”

As I sit here, writing this, I can’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for this incredible experience. Chefchaouen has captured a piece of my heart, and I know I will carry its blue hues and warm spirit with me always.
