Discover the serene beauty of Ngorongoro's crater rim, from cozy campsites to delightful dining and unique souvenir shopping.
A Day of Tranquility and Treasures
Today was a day of gentle exploration and quiet reflection along the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater. It was a welcome change of pace after our thrilling game drives, allowing us to soak in the stunning scenery and appreciate the unique experiences the area has to offer. The day was filled with simple pleasures, from enjoying delicious meals at the lodges to discovering unique souvenirs at a local shop.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge. The lodge is perched on the edge of the crater, offering breathtaking views. The dining room was beautifully designed, with large windows that framed the landscape perfectly. There was a wide variety of options available, from a full English breakfast to continental and Asian choices. I enjoyed some freshly baked bread with jam and a cup of strong, sweet tea. Habibullah opted for the buffet, enjoying some fruit. It was the perfect way to start our day.

After breakfast, we decided to explore some of the campsites in the area. Our first stop was Simba Campsite A. It's a popular spot for those who want to immerse themselves in nature. The campsite was clean and well-maintained, with good facilities. I was impressed by the large, clean bathrooms and dining facilities. We met some fellow travelers who were setting up their tents, eager to spend the night under the stars. It reminded me of our own camping adventures back in Afghanistan, before we moved to Canada. Although I do prefer a comfy bed these days, I still admire those who embrace the simplicity of camping.

Next, we visited Ngorongoro Lions Paw by Karibu Camps & Lodges. The camp is nestled among acacia trees on the eastern rim of the crater. The location was incredible, offering panoramic views of the crater. The staff were very welcoming, and the atmosphere was serene. I could easily imagine spending a relaxing evening here, enjoying the tranquility of the bush. Perhaps next time we could book a stay here.

Our final campsite visit was to Ngorongoro Forest Tented Lodge. This family-friendly lodge is located in the mountains, surrounded by forest. The lodge offers a rooftop terrace, a firepit, and hiking trails. I was intrigued by the idea of staying in a tented room in the middle of the forest. It would be a unique experience, surrounded by nature's sounds and the occasional visit from local wildlife.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest moments, like a quiet meal with a breathtaking view or a chance encounter with fellow travelers.
For lunch, we had the pleasure of dining at The Highlands, Ngorongoro. This unique camp is set on the slopes of the Olmoti Volcano. The architecture was striking, with domed suites inspired by traditional Maasai bomas. The food was exceptional, a blend of international favorites and African-inspired dishes. I savored a delicious vegetarian curry, while Habibullah enjoyed a grilled fish. The service was impeccable, with the staff going out of their way to make us feel welcome.

In the afternoon, we visited the Gift Boutique & Cosmetics. I was hoping to find some unique souvenirs to take back home to Toronto. The boutique offered a variety of clothing, accessories, and cosmetics, all reflecting the vibrant spirit of Tanzania. I purchased a beautiful, hand-woven scarf with intricate patterns, reminiscent of the carpets I used to weave in Bamyan. Farzana will surely love it. Habibullah bought some locally made soap with natural ingredients. It felt good to support local artisans and take home a piece of Tanzanian culture.

I chose a selection of salads and roasted vegetables, while Habibullah enjoyed some grilled meat. The atmosphere was relaxed and comfortable, perfect for winding down after a day of exploration. I liked that the lodge had a gift shop, a bar, and even a swimming pool.

Tomorrow, we are planning to visit the Ngorongoro Wild Camp and experience the Ngorongoro Crater Day Trip. I am looking forward to another day of adventure and discovery.
Before heading to bed, I made sure to jot down my experiences in my travel journal. It's important to document these memories, so that I can relive them again and again. As I drifted off to sleep, I felt a sense of peace and contentment. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area had captured my heart, and I knew that I would never forget this incredible journey.
Tomorrow promises more excitement, with a planned visit to Ngorongoro Wild Camp and a full day excursion into the heart of the Ngorongoro Crater. The beauty of this journey lies not just in the destinations we visit, but in the moments we share and the memories we create together. It's a reminder of the importance of family, culture, and the simple joys of life.
