Embracing the Wild

Today, the sixth day of our family adventure in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, was all about immersing ourselves in the raw, unfiltered beauty of Tanzania. We traded the familiar comforts of lodges for a night of Nomad Camping, a decision that promised an intimate connection with the African wilderness. It was an experience that resonated deeply with my soul, reminding me of my roots and the untamed spirit of the land.

Our day started with a hearty breakfast at the Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge, perched high on the crater rim. The lodge, designed to resemble traditional African houses, offered a magnificent view. Habibullah and I enjoyed our tea while Farzana took photos of the crater as the sun began to rise, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink. I remember similar sunrises in Bamyan, Afghanistan, where the mountains would glow with the same ethereal light. It’s moments like these that remind me how connected we all are, no matter where we come from.

After breakfast, we packed our essentials and set off for our nomad camping adventure. The drive itself was a game drive, as the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is teeming with wildlife. We spotted zebras grazing peacefully, wildebeest meandering across the plains, and even a glimpse of a rhino in the distance. Farzana was particularly excited, snapping photos and marveling at the animals in their natural habitat. It's a stark contrast to the city life we lead in Toronto, and I'm grateful for these opportunities to reconnect with nature.

Our nomad camping experience took us to a secluded spot, away from the usual tourist trails. The silence was profound, broken only by the occasional call of a bird or the distant roar of a lion. It was a humbling experience, being surrounded by the vastness of the African bush. As someone who grew up in a bustling city, Habibullah found the quiet unnerving at first, but he soon grew to appreciate the tranquility.

We spent the afternoon exploring the area around our campsite, accompanied by a local guide who shared his knowledge of the flora and fauna. He showed us how to identify different animal tracks, explained the medicinal properties of various plants, and told us stories about the Maasai people who call this land home. It was fascinating to learn about their traditions and their deep connection to the land.

The wilderness holds answers to questions we have not yet learned to ask.

As the sun began to set, we helped set up our tents and prepare our evening meal. It was a simple affair – grilled vegetables and some naan bread we had brought with us. But the flavors were enhanced by the open fire and the crisp evening air. Farzana, who usually shies away from cooking, surprised us all by taking charge of the grilling. I think she’s finally embracing her adventurous side!

After dinner, we sat around the campfire, sharing stories and gazing at the stars. The sky was ablaze with constellations I had never seen before, a dazzling display of cosmic beauty. The guide pointed out the Southern Cross and other celestial landmarks, sharing ancient tales and legends associated with them. It was a magical experience, feeling so small yet so connected to the universe.

Before retiring to our tents, we made sure to take all necessary precautions to protect ourselves from wildlife. Our guide had warned us about the presence of hyenas and other nocturnal creatures, so we secured our food supplies and kept a watchful eye on our surroundings. Sleeping in a tent in the middle of the African bush was definitely a new experience for us, but we felt safe and secure knowing that we were in good hands.

Earlier in the day, we enjoyed a delightful lunch at andBeyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge. The lodge, with its handcrafted mud-and-thatch suites, evoked a romantic, bygone era. The meal was a gourmet feast, served in one of the most unique settings in Africa. We enjoyed a private picnic spot on the Crater floor, with tables set with snowy tablecloths and sparkling silver cutlery. Butlers attended to our every wish as we indulged in mouth-watering dishes, all against the backdrop of zebras strolling along the Crater floor. Habibullah was particularly impressed with the wine selection, while Farzana couldn't get enough of the desserts.

For dinner, we found ourselves at the Ngorongoro Lodge, a member of the Meliá Collection. The lodge offered a fusion of traditional African cuisine with Asian influences, a delightful culinary experience. The views of the crater were spectacular, adding to the ambiance of the evening. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home.

Before heading to our nomad campsite, we made a stop at the Ngorongoro Rhino Lodge. Though not on the crater rim, the lodge offered a nice view of the conservation area, especially the sunset. The wood-burning stove generated warmth, a welcome respite from the chilly evening air. We enjoyed a drink at the well-stocked bar, chatting with fellow travelers and exchanging stories of our adventures.

Surrounded by lush greenery, the park offered a refreshing ambiance. We enjoyed some local brews and mingled with fellow travelers, sharing stories about our adventures in Tanzania. It was a great way to soak in the local culture and relax after a day of exploring.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area has won Africa's Leading Tourist Attraction 2025. It is easy to see why. It is a breathtaking wonder, renowned for its rich biodiversity and spectacular landscapes. The crater itself is home to over 25,000 animals, including the Big Five. It is truly one of the best places to see wildlife in Africa.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Simba Campsite A, another popular camping spot in the area. We also hope to see the Ngorongoro Lions Paw by Karibu Camps & Lodges and the Ngorongoro Forest Tented Lodge. Breakfast will be at the Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge, lunch at The Highlands, Ngorongoro, and dinner back at the Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge. We might even squeeze in some shopping at the Gift Boutique & Cosmetics.

Our nomad camping experience in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area was a journey into the heart of Africa that touched our souls and deepened our connection with each other. It was a reminder that the greatest luxuries in life are not material possessions, but rather the simple joys of nature, family, and shared experiences. It's experiences like these that make me appreciate my homeland even more, and I'm glad to be sharing it with my family.
