Island Echoes: A Fond Farewell to Naoshima

As my ten-day solo journey through Naoshima Island draws to a close, I find myself filled with a mix of gratitude and melancholy. This island, with its seamless blend of art, nature, and tranquility, has left an indelible mark on my soul. Today was about soaking in the last moments, embracing the unexpected, and savoring the unique experiences Naoshima had to offer.

My final morning began with a delightful breakfast at Nagomi. The traditional Japanese fare, with its delicate flavors and artful presentation, was the perfect way to start the day. I savored each bite, reflecting on the culinary adventures I’d had throughout my stay. From the savory okonomiyaki to the freshest seafood, Naoshima’s food scene has been a delightful complement to its artistic offerings.

After breakfast, I decided to revisit some of my favorite spots on the island. I strolled along the coastline, letting the gentle sea breeze wash over me. The vibrant blue of the Seto Inland Sea, dotted with small islands, was a sight I knew I would miss dearly. I paused at the iconic Yellow Pumpkin, taking one last photo to capture its whimsical charm against the backdrop of the sea.

As I wandered, I stumbled upon a hidden gem – La forêt des murmures. This enchanting forest was a welcome escape from the midday sun. The air was filled with the sound of rustling leaves and chirping birds, creating a serene atmosphere that invited contemplation. I spent some time simply sitting on a moss-covered rock, listening to the whispers of the wind through the trees. It was a perfect reminder that art isn't just confined to museums; it exists in the natural world around us.

For lunch, I headed to Kinosaki Udon Naoshima, a local favorite known for its hearty and flavorful udon noodles. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to enjoy a comforting bowl of noodles. I ordered the Kake Udon, a simple yet satisfying dish that warmed me from the inside out. As I ate, I struck up a conversation with a friendly couple from Osaka, who were visiting Naoshima for the first time. They were captivated by the island’s art scene and were eager to explore all that it had to offer. It was heartwarming to share my experiences with them and to see their excitement for the island.

In the afternoon, I decided to explore the Chōshi valley Monkey Kingdom Natural Zoo. While it wasn't initially on my list, I had heard intriguing stories about the playful monkeys that inhabited the area. The zoo was a bit off the beaten path, requiring a scenic hike through lush greenery. The hike itself was a rewarding experience, offering stunning views of the island and the sea beyond.

Upon reaching the Monkey Kingdom, I was greeted by a lively troop of Japanese macaques. These adorable creatures were full of energy, swinging from trees, grooming each other, and generally causing mischief. I watched them for hours, marveling at their antics and their complex social dynamics. It was a delightful reminder of the simple joys of nature and the importance of preserving these precious creatures.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to the Kankakei Ropeway. I wanted to get a panoramic view of the island before I departed. The ropeway journey was breathtaking, offering stunning vistas of Naoshima's rugged coastline, verdant hills, and sparkling sea. From the top, I could see the various art installations scattered across the island, each one a testament to Naoshima's unique artistic vision.

For my final dinner on Naoshima, I chose Gumbo Hut Shioya. I wanted to savor one last taste of the island's culinary delights. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. I ordered the seafood gumbo, a rich and flavorful stew that was packed with fresh, local ingredients. As I ate, I reflected on my journey through Naoshima. I thought about the incredible art I had seen, the delicious food I had tasted, and the wonderful people I had met. I realized that this trip had been more than just a vacation; it had been a transformative experience that had enriched my life in countless ways. I even considered how Maximilian and Astrid would have loved this place.

Before heading back to My Lodge Naoshima, I decided to make a final stop at Little Plum, a cozy bar I'd discovered earlier in the week. I ordered a glass of local sake and savored the smooth, subtle flavors. The bar was quiet and peaceful, a perfect setting for reflection. I raised my glass in a toast to Naoshima, to its art, its people, and its enduring beauty.

Tomorrow marks the end of my Naoshima adventure. I'll be heading back to Uno Port, then taking the train to Osaka for my flight back to Hannover. While I'm eager to return home to Maximilian and Astrid, I know that a part of me will always remain on this enchanting island. The memories and experiences I've gained here will stay with me forever, inspiring me to seek out beauty, creativity, and connection in all aspects of my life.

Naoshima, thank you for the art, the inspiration, and the unforgettable memories. Until we meet again.
