Kyoto's Calm Embrace

Today was a deep dive into the heart of Kyoto's serene beauty and artistic soul. It’s amazing how a single day can be filled with so much tranquility and inspiration. I felt a sense of calm wash over me as I explored the meticulously designed gardens and admired the intricate craftsmanship that Kyoto is known for. It was a day to remember.

I started the day with breakfast at Kikunoi Roan. Maximilian had told me about this restaurant. It was a very traditional Japanese breakfast. The service was wonderful and the food delicious. I especially enjoyed the miso soup and the perfectly cooked rice. It was a great way to start the day, setting a peaceful tone for what was to come.

First on the itinerary was the Heian Shrine. As I approached the shrine, the massive torii gate immediately commanded my attention. The vibrant vermillion color against the clear sky was striking. Learning that the shrine was built to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of Kyoto as the capital really put its historical significance into perspective. The architecture, reminiscent of the Heian Period's Imperial Palace, transported me back in time. I wandered through the spacious courtyard, admiring the elegant design and the meticulous attention to detail.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its historical landmarks, but in the serene moments of reflection they inspire.

The Shin'en Garden was a highlight. Designed by Ogawa Jihei, the garden is divided into four distinct sections, each offering a unique landscape. Although it's still early March, I could see hints of the spring blossoms to come. I was particularly drawn to the weeping cherry trees, imagining how stunning they would look in full bloom come mid-April. The irises, too, promised a vibrant display in the summer. I spent a good hour simply wandering around the ponds and enjoying the tranquility of the surroundings. It was easy to get lost in the beauty and forget about the hustle and bustle of the city outside.

Next, I headed to the Kyoto Museum of Crafts and Design, located in the Miyakomesse complex. As a librarian, I'm naturally drawn to places that celebrate knowledge and creativity, and this museum was no exception. The museum showcases the 74 categories of Kyoto's traditional crafts, and it was fascinating to see the incredible skill and artistry that goes into each one. From kimonos to pottery, lacquerware to paper crafts, the variety was astounding.

The 74 Crafts Wall was particularly impressive. It's the largest display wall in Japan, exhibiting all the categories of Kyoto traditional crafts. I spent ages looking at the intricate details and reading about the history and techniques behind each craft. I was also lucky enough to catch a craft demonstration, where I watched a skilled artisan at work, creating delicate patterns on a piece of fabric. It was mesmerizing to see the level of precision and dedication required to master these traditional skills. I even considered picking up a small souvenir at the museum shop, perhaps a piece of lacquerware or a handmade paper item, but decided to wait for another day.

After immersing myself in the world of crafts and design, I decided to take a break for lunch. I chose Hanasaki, a restaurant recommended by a local, for a traditional Kyoto lunch. The restaurant was in a beautiful, traditional building, and the atmosphere was serene and inviting. I opted for one of their reasonably priced lunch sets, which included a variety of Kyoto specialties. I sampled tofu, yuba, and several kinds of local vegetables. The flavors were delicate and refined, and I enjoyed the experience of trying new and unique dishes. I really enjoyed the sake as well, which had a very distinct taste.

In the afternoon, I visited the Kyoto Botanical Gardens. Despite it being early March, the gardens were still beautiful. It was interesting to see the variety of plants and trees, even though not everything was in bloom yet. I learned that the gardens are the oldest public botanical garden in Japan, opened in 1924, and they boast an impressive 12,000 varieties of plants. I can only imagine how stunning the gardens will be later in the spring, especially during the cherry blossom season. I made a mental note to return in late March or early April to witness the sakura in full bloom.

As I strolled through the gardens, I found a peaceful spot to sit and reflect on the day. The gardens provided a welcome escape from the city, and I enjoyed the opportunity to connect with nature and appreciate the beauty of the natural world. I was also excited to find out that the gardens hold a special cherry blossom illumination event from March 25th to April 6th, which I'll be sure to attend.

For dinner, I decided to try AIN SOPH. Journey KYOTO, a vegan restaurant. I was curious to see how they would interpret traditional Japanese cuisine using only plant-based ingredients. I must say, I was pleasantly surprised. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. I ordered the crispy soy chicken burger, which was delicious, though a little on the salty side, and some vegan matcha pancakes which were delicious. It was a unique and satisfying culinary experience.

To end the day, I ventured out to Bar Fishbowl. The bar had a quirky and fun atmosphere, and I enjoyed sipping on a Japanese whiskey while watching the colorful fish swim in the aquarium. I struck up a conversation with a local who recommended some other interesting places to visit in Kyoto. It was a great way to unwind and soak in the local atmosphere.

“Travel is not about the destination, but the moments and memories created along the way.”

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Fushimi Inari Taisha, Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum, and Kyoto Tower. I'm particularly excited about seeing the thousands of vermillion torii gates at Fushimi Inari and learning more about sake production at the Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum. I'm also looking forward to seeing Kyoto from above at the Kyoto Tower.

Today was a reminder of why I love Kyoto so much. The city is a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. I am so glad that I was able to experience the beauty of this city with my friends. I am grateful for the opportunity to explore and learn, and I look forward to more adventures in the days to come.

Maximilian will certainly be happy to hear about my day when I speak to him and Astrid later. I know they would have loved to have been here with me today.

Until tomorrow!
