First Impressions of Fes El Bali

The initial day of our Moroccan adventure was nothing short of a complete immersion into the heart of Fes El Bali. Imagine stepping into a world where every corner turned reveals a new tapestry of sights, sounds, and scents. Today was a day of exploration, discovery, and a healthy dose of getting utterly lost in the labyrinthine alleyways of Fes El Bali.

Our journey began as soon as our flight touched down. The Munich to Fes flight was thankfully uneventful, and the taxi ride to our riad was a blur of new impressions. The architecture shifted dramatically from what I'm used to seeing in Munich; the air was thick with the aroma of spices, and the calls to prayer echoed through the streets. I already knew I'd be needing that adapter I forgot! I made a mental note to pick one up tomorrow.

First things first, breakfast at Cafe Clock! I had heard so much about this place, a cultural hub that seemed to blend tradition with a modern, bohemian vibe. It was easy to locate next to the Bou Inania Madrasa. The cafe was buzzing with a mix of tourists and locals, the atmosphere lively and welcoming. I opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast –beghrir (pancakes) with honey andamlou(a spread made from almonds, argan oil, and honey), a delightful start to the day.

Fuelled up, we dove headfirst into the Medina, Fes El Bali. It's easy to get lost, but that's part of the charm, isn't it? The donkey-filled alleyways, the vibrant colours of the spices, and the intricate metalwork on every door were mesmerizing. It’s a sensory overload in the best possible way. I felt like I had stepped back in time, a sentiment I know Maximilian would have appreciated. I made a mental note to tell him all about it when I called tonight.

The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in how those places change you.

Our first official stop was the Bou Inania Madrasa, a stunning example of Marinid architecture. The intricate carvings, the detailed zellij tilework, and the peaceful courtyard were a welcome respite from the bustling streets outside. The Madrasa was founded in the 14th century and features a main hall supported by 260 columns and a stunning Mihrab. It was easy to see why it is considered one of the most beautiful in Morocco. Astrid would have loved the colours and patterns; I can already imagine her trying to recreate them in her drawings.

Next on the list was the Nejjarine Museum of Wooden Arts & Crafts, housed in an exquisitely restored 18th-century fondouk. The museum showcases the rich heritage of Moroccan woodworking, with exhibits ranging from ancient tools to intricately carved doors and musical instruments. The scent of cedarwood filled the air, and the craftsmanship was simply breathtaking. The rooftop terrace offered panoramic views of the medina, a perfect spot to take a break and soak in the atmosphere. I could have spent hours just wandering through the exhibits, admiring the skill and artistry of the Moroccan artisans.

Lunch was at The Ruined Garden, a hidden gem tucked away in the heart of the Medina. The setting was magical – a lush garden filled with orange and lemon trees, jasmine and roses, all set within the ruins of an old courtyard house. The climate of Fes seems to be a gardener's paradise, and the garden was a verdant oasis. The food was delicious, a mix of traditional Moroccan dishes and modern interpretations. I opted for a tagine with seasonal vegetables, a flavorful and satisfying meal. We enjoyed street foods and daily dishes, soaking in the unique atmosphere.

After lunch, we ventured into Coin Berbere Carpets & Antiques, a shop I had read about before arriving. It has existed for about 60 years and was one of the first carpet stores in Fes. The shop was a treasure trove of carpets, textiles, and antiques. I found myself drawn to a beautiful Berber rug, its intricate designs and vibrant colours telling a story of the tribes who created it. The owner, a friendly and knowledgeable man, shared the history and significance of the rug, making the purchase even more meaningful. I bargained a bit, of course, it is part of the culture, and left with a unique piece of Moroccan craftsmanship to bring back home.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Restaurant Dar Hatim for dinner. This family-run restaurant, nestled in a beautifully tiled home in the Medina, offered a truly authentic Moroccan dining experience. The food was incredible; I tried Pastilla, the specialty of Fez, and couscous. The service was warm and welcoming, and the atmosphere was intimate and inviting.

Reflecting on the day, I am struck by the sheer intensity of Fes. It is a city that assaults the senses, challenges expectations, and rewards exploration. I’m also struck by the crowds. With Easter just around the corner, and Ramadan having just ended, Fes is a popular destination! I am excited to see what tomorrow brings, with plans to visit the Chouara Tannery, Al Attarine Madrasa, and the Mausoleum of Moulay Idriss II. I am also looking forward to experiencing the Mezzanine bar in the evening. I am sure I will sleep well tonight, dreaming of the colours, sounds, and smells of Fes.
