Yakushima's Hidden Gems: History, Hot Springs, and Heartwarming Encounters
Today was a day of contrasts, blending the introspective atmosphere of a local museum with the invigorating embrace of a seaside onsen. It was a chance to connect with the island's heritage and unwind in a truly unique setting. The day unfolded with a sense of discovery, offering glimpses into Yakushima's past and moments of pure relaxation.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Michikusa. Nestled in a cozy corner, this spot is known for its local flavors and charming atmosphere. I savored a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and perfectly steamed rice. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration.

After breakfast, I set out to explore the Yakushima Museum of History and Folklore. The museum isn't very large, but it's packed with artifacts and exhibits that tell the story of Yakushima's people, traditions, and natural environment. It was fascinating to learn about the island's early inhabitants, their traditional ways of life, and the unique cultural practices that have shaped Yakushima over centuries.

The past is never dead. It's not even past.
One of the most interesting exhibits was a real-scale replica of a traditional house that was built before World War II on nearby Kuchinoerabu Island. The bamboo structure was based on old photographs and could be entered and viewed from the inside. It offered a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the island's residents in the past.
The museum also featured exhibits on Yakushima's native monkeys and deer, sub-species of their larger cousins on the main islands. There was even a wooden monkey trap on display. Of particular interest were the exhibits relating to festivals on the island, including costumes and a rice straw rope used in a tug-of-war festival between different villages.
After immersing myself in the island's history, it was time for a change of pace. I made my way to Hirauchi Kaichu Onsen, a unique seaside hot spring located in the southern part of the island. This onsen is only accessible during low tide, making it a truly special experience. The water flows up from the bottom of the sea into natural rock pools, creating a one-of-a-kind bathing experience.

As I soaked in the warm waters, I gazed out at the ocean, listening to the soothing sound of the waves. It was incredibly relaxing, and I felt a deep connection to nature. The locals have been using this onsen for centuries, and it's easy to see why. It's a place of healing and rejuvenation, a place to escape the stresses of everyday life.
After my onsen experience, I was ready for lunch. I decided to try Subarashi Indian Restaurant, a local favorite known for its authentic Indian flavors. I ordered a vegetarian curry, specifying no butter or ghee to make it vegan. The curry was delicious, and the service was friendly and quick. It was a delightful change of pace from the Japanese cuisine I had been enjoying.

In the late afternoon, with the sun beginning to dip lower in the sky, I decided to find a spot where I could simply sit and reflect on the day's adventures. I ended up near the coast, watching the waves crash against the rocks. The air was fresh and clean, carrying with it the scent of the sea and the forest. It was a moment of perfect tranquility, a reminder of why I had come to Yakushima in the first place.
As evening approached, my thoughts drifted back to my wife, Olivia, and my son, Thando. I imagined them back home in Kelowna, Olivia likely finishing up a shift at the hospital, and Thando probably engrossed in one of his many Lego projects. I made a mental note to pick up a small souvenir for them tomorrow, something that would capture the essence of Yakushima and remind them of my adventure.
For dinner, I treated myself to a meal at Il Mare, an Italian restaurant located near the airport. I had heard great things about their Neapolitan-style pizzas, and I was not disappointed. The pizza was delicious, with fresh, local ingredients and a perfectly crispy crust. The restaurant itself was charming, with a cozy atmosphere and friendly staff.

Before calling it a night, I decided to check out Ganta, a local bar known for its lively atmosphere and local spirits. It was a great place to unwind after a long day of exploring. I enjoyed a local brew and chatted with some of the other patrons, who were a mix of locals and tourists. It was a fun and memorable experience.

As I walked back to my guesthouse, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences I had today. Yakushima had once again exceeded my expectations, offering a perfect blend of culture, relaxation, and natural beauty. I thought about tomorrow's itinerary, which includes a hike up Mt. Miyanoura and a visit to Fureai Park Yakushima. The prospect of conquering the island's highest peak filled me with a sense of excitement and anticipation.
I also thought about the essentials I had forgotten to pack – insect repellent and sunscreen. The mosquitos had been quite persistent, and the sun was stronger than I had anticipated. I made a mental note to purchase these items tomorrow before embarking on my hike. It was a small oversight, but one that could make a big difference in my comfort and enjoyment of the day.
Back at my guesthouse, I took a few moments to jot down some notes in my journal, capturing the highlights of the day and reflecting on the lessons I had learned. As a software developer, I often find myself lost in the digital world, surrounded by lines of code and complex algorithms. But here in Yakushima, I was reminded of the importance of connecting with nature, of immersing myself in different cultures, and of appreciating the simple things in life.
Tomorrow, I plan to conquer Mt. Miyanoura, the highest peak in Yakushima. I'm looking forward to the challenge and the stunning views from the summit. Wish me luck!
As I drifted off to sleep, I felt a sense of contentment and gratitude. Yakushima had captured my heart, and I knew that this solo adventure would be one that I would cherish for years to come. The island's ancient forests, pristine waters, and warm-hearted people had left an indelible mark on my soul, reminding me of the beauty and wonder that exists in the world.
Tomorrow promises more adventure as I tackle Mt. Miyanoura and explore Fureai Park. I'm also planning to visit YAWARACA “The Scent of Yakushima LAB” to find a unique scent that captures the essence of this magical island. Good night from Yakushima!
