Island Echoes

As our final day on Naoshima Island drew to a close, I found myself reflecting on the profound impact this small island has had on me and my family. It’s remarkable how a place so geographically contained can hold such expansive artistic and cultural significance. Today was about soaking in the last drops of Naoshima’s unique atmosphere, revisiting favorite spots, and discovering hidden gems before we bid farewell to this inspiring locale.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Aisunao. Olivia, Thando, and I were eager to start the day, and Aisunao, known for its delicious vegan options and warm hospitality, was the perfect spot. I opted for the traditional Japanese breakfast set, while Olivia enjoyed the vegan curry. Thando, ever the adventurous eater, surprised us by trying (and loving!) the brown rice porridge. The cozy atmosphere and friendly staff made it a delightful start to our final day on the island.

After breakfast, we made our way to the Ando Museum. As a software developer with a keen interest in architecture, I was particularly excited to delve deeper into the work of Tadao Ando, whose designs are so integral to Naoshima’s identity. The museum itself is a work of art, a beautifully renovated traditional Japanese house that seamlessly blends with Ando’s signature concrete style.

Inside, we explored exhibits showcasing Ando’s architectural philosophy and his projects on Naoshima. The way he juxtaposes traditional wooden structures with modern concrete elements is fascinating, creating spaces that feel both intimate and expansive. Thando, surprisingly engaged, peppered me with questions about the models and sketches, showing a budding interest in design. Olivia appreciated the thoughtful curation of the museum, noting how it provided a deeper understanding of Ando’s vision for the island.

Art is not about what you see, but what you make others see.

Leaving the Ando Museum, we decided to take a leisurely stroll towards Kasaneiwa. This natural rock formation on Shodoshima Island, visible from Naoshima, has always intrigued me. The walk itself was a peaceful experience, with the gentle sea breeze and the sound of waves accompanying us. Along the way, we passed charming local houses and small gardens, each adding to the island's unique character. I snapped a few photos, trying to capture the essence of this tranquil setting. I am so glad we did not forget the camera, as I would have been kicking myself had I left it at My Lodge Naoshima.

Upon reaching the area overlooking Kasaneiwa, we were struck by the beauty of the stacked rocks and the surrounding landscape. The mystery surrounding the formation – how these rocks came to be stacked so perfectly – added to its allure. Thando, with his boundless energy, was fascinated by the rocks, imagining all sorts of stories about how they were formed. Olivia and I simply enjoyed the serene view, taking a moment to appreciate the natural beauty that complements the art so well on these islands.

For lunch, we headed to Yuunagi, a local eatery known for its fresh seafood. This spot came highly recommended, and it did not disappoint. I decided to try their fried flounder, which was perfectly crispy and flavorful. Olivia opted for the sashimi, while Thando, sticking to his favorites, chose the karage (fried chicken). The friendly service and the cozy atmosphere made it a memorable meal.

After lunch, with the afternoon sun casting a golden glow over the island, we decided to indulge in a bit of souvenir shopping. Our destination was the 7-Eleven Naoshima Shop. Yes, a 7-Eleven might seem like an odd choice for souvenir shopping, but this particular one is a vital part of the island’s infrastructure, offering a mix of everyday essentials and local snacks. We picked up some local sweets and small trinkets to take back home, tokens to remind us of our time on Naoshima. I also used the ATM to withdraw some cash, as I recalled reading that not all establishments on the island accept credit cards.

As the day wound down, we chose to have dinner at Chikurin. This cozy izakaya offered a perfect setting for our farewell meal. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with locals and tourists mingling and sharing stories. The owner was incredibly friendly, making us feel right at home. We ordered a variety of dishes, including grilled fish, karaage, and sake. Thando was particularly fond of the karaage, declaring it the best he had ever tasted.

The evening was filled with laughter, reminiscing about our favorite moments on the island. Olivia spoke about the profound impact of the Chichu Art Museum, while Thando recounted his adventures exploring the outdoor sculptures at Benesse House. For me, the highlight was the overall experience of discovering how art, nature, and community could come together to create such a unique and inspiring place.

As we walked back to My Lodge Naoshima under the starlit sky, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for this incredible journey. Naoshima had exceeded all my expectations, offering a blend of artistic discovery, cultural immersion, and family bonding that I will cherish forever. Even though I had forgotten the travel adapter and an extra memory card for the camera, these minor inconveniences paled in comparison to the wealth of experiences we had gained.

Reflecting on our time here, I am reminded of a quote by the renowned architect Tadao Ando:

To plant a tree is to believe in tomorrow.

This quote encapsulates the spirit of Naoshima, a place where art and nature coexist in harmony, inspiring hope and creativity for generations to come. The island's commitment to art and sustainable development reflects a belief in a brighter future, one where culture and community thrive together.

Tomorrow, we will be making our way back to Kelowna, filled with memories of our family art adventure on Naoshima Island. While I am eager to return to my familiar routine, a part of me will always remain on this enchanting island, wandering through its art museums and soaking in its serene landscapes. I am already looking forward to the day when we can return and rediscover the magic of Naoshima.

As we prepare to leave, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences we’ve shared and the memories we’ve created. Naoshima has not only enriched our understanding of art but has also strengthened our bond as a family. It’s a place that will forever hold a special place in our hearts.

Until next time, Naoshima. Thank you for the art, the beauty, and the inspiration. Goodbye, for now, from the Dlamini family.

P.S. If you ever find yourself planning a trip to Japan, make sure to include Naoshima on your itinerary. You won’t regret it. Just remember to book your accommodations and museum tickets in advance, and don’t forget your camera!
