Kyoto's Spiritual and Culinary Delights

Today was a day of deep dives into Kyoto's soul, a blend of ancient spirituality and modern-day pleasures. From the vermilion pathways of Fushimi Inari to the serene gardens of Tofuku-ji, and finally, the geisha district of Gion, it was a sensory feast that left me both humbled and exhilarated. I even managed to find some culinary gems that I'm eager to share.

My day began with an early start to beat the crowds at Fushimi Inari Taisha. I'd heard tales of its mesmerizing tunnels of thousands of vermilion torii gates winding up the mountain, and I wasn't disappointed. The train ride there was straightforward, and as I stepped out of the station, the imposing entrance to the shrine was right before me. Even though it's March, there was a slight nip in the air, so I was glad I had my lightweight jacket with me. I really should have remembered my umbrella though, the skies looked ominous.

The sheer scale of Fushimi Inari is breathtaking. Each torii gate has been donated by a business or individual, their names inscribed on the pillars. As I walked through the seemingly endless path, the bright vermilion color popped against the green forest, creating a surreal and awe-inspiring experience. The further I hiked, the fewer people I encountered, and the more profound the sense of tranquility became. It was a meditative experience, a world away from the hustle and bustle of Kelowna. I took my time, stopping frequently to capture the beauty with my camera. I find that photography really helps me to connect with a place.

The journey through Kyoto is a reminder that the most profound experiences often lie in the blend of tradition and personal discovery.

After descending Fushimi Inari, my stomach was rumbling. I hopped on the train to Tofuku-ji Temple, eager to explore another of Kyoto's famed landmarks. Before heading to Tofuku-ji I stopped for a quick bite at Mezopotamia Kebab House for breakfast. I know, I know, kebabs in Japan, but I was intrigued. It was a great choice! The kebab roll was delicious, filled with fresh ingredients and flavorful meat. It was a welcome change from the more traditional Japanese fare I had been eating. I made a mental note to bring Olivia here next time; she loves Middle Eastern food.

Tofuku-ji Temple was a stark contrast to the vibrant energy of Fushimi Inari. It is renowned for its Zen gardens and the Tsutenkyo Bridge, a wooden structure offering stunning views of the maple trees below. Although the autumn colors are long gone, the gardens still possessed a serene beauty, and I could only imagine how spectacular it must be in November. The temple complex itself was impressive, with its ancient gates and halls whispering tales of centuries past. I spent a couple of hours wandering the grounds, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere.

For lunch, I ventured to Oryori Menami, a restaurant recommended for its Obanzai cuisine. Obanzai, I learned, is a traditional style of Kyoto home cooking, emphasizing seasonal ingredients and simple preparations. The restaurant was a bit tricky to find, tucked away in a quiet street, but it was well worth the effort. The meal was a delightful assortment of small dishes, each bursting with flavor and showcasing the freshness of the local produce. The gentle flavors were a welcome change of pace, and I savored every bite. It reminded me a bit of Olivia's cooking back home – simple, wholesome, and delicious. I really must remember to bring her here.

As evening approached, I made my way to Gion, Kyoto's geisha district. The narrow streets were atmospheric, with traditional wooden machiya houses lining the way. Although spotting a geisha is never guaranteed, I enjoyed simply wandering the area, imagining what life must have been like here centuries ago. The lantern-lit streets and the gentle murmur of conversation created a magical ambiance. I even caught a glimpse of a Maiko hurrying to an appointment. It was a fleeting moment, but it added to the allure of Gion.

Dinner was at Kobe Beef Steak Restaurant MOURIYA GION, and it was an experience to remember. The restaurant specializes in Kobe beef, and I decided to splurge on a sirloin steak. The chef cooked the steak teppanyaki-style right in front of me, and it was fascinating to watch his skill and precision. The steak itself was melt-in-your-mouth tender, with a rich, buttery flavor that was simply divine. It was without a doubt the best steak I've ever had. I'm not usually one for fancy dining, but this was worth every penny. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration.

To cap off the evening, I decided to check out Bar Fishbowl. The bar had a unique atmosphere, with fish tanks built into the walls. I ordered a Japanese whiskey and relaxed, watching the colorful fish swim by. It was a quirky and enjoyable way to unwind after a long day. It reminded me of some of the more eccentric bars back in the UK.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Philosopher's Path, Nanzen-ji Temple, and Heian Shrine. I'm also hoping to do some shopping at Kyoto Shinkyogoku Shopping Street. I'm looking forward to another day of discovery in this fascinating city.

It’s funny, you know, travelling solo has its perks. I can go wherever I want, whenever I want, and linger as long as I please. But there are moments, like tonight, when I wish Olivia were here to share these incredible experiences with me. I know she would love Kyoto as much as I do. I guess that just means we'll have to come back together someday.

Until tomorrow,

James.
