Echoes of the Past in the Valleys of Shikoku

Today was a day of contrasts, from the roaring rapids of a dramatic gorge to the hushed halls of a museum steeped in history. It's amazing how much a single day can reveal about the soul of a place, and Shikoku certainly has a soul all its own. The day was a blend of natural beauty and historical immersion, offering a deeper understanding of this fascinating island.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Ombelico. It was a great way to start the day, fueling up for the adventures that lay ahead. With a good meal under my belt, I set off to explore the famed Ōboke Gorge.

Ōboke Gorge: A Dance with Nature's Fury

The drive to Ōboke Gorge was scenic, winding through lush landscapes that seemed to whisper tales of ancient times. As I approached the gorge, the air grew cooler, and I could hear the distant roar of the Yoshino River. The name Ōboke translates to big dangerous steps, and standing at the edge of the gorge, I could certainly see why. The steep, rocky walls plunged dramatically into the swirling rapids below, a testament to the raw power of nature.

I decided to take a sightseeing boat tour to truly appreciate the gorge's grandeur. Settling into the boat, I was immediately struck by the vibrant colors of the water – a deep, mesmerizing green that seemed to pulse with life. The guide pointed out interesting rock formations, each with its own unique shape and story. I learned that the Yoshino River is a popular spot for whitewater rafting, and I could see why. The rapids looked both exhilarating and intimidating, a challenge for even the most experienced adventurers. Perhaps if Olivia were here, she would have talked me into rafting, but I was content with the boat tour.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found not in conquering nature, but in quietly observing its majesty.

The boat ride was smooth, and I was able to truly appreciate the beauty of the gorge. The fresh air, the sound of the water, and the stunning scenery created a sense of tranquility that washed over me. It was a moment of pure bliss, a reminder of the simple joys of travel. After the boat tour, I spent some time exploring the area around Ōboke Station, a charming, unstaffed station that seemed to be a gateway to another world. I also popped into Shikoku Shop 88, picking up a few local snacks to try later. I couldn't resist a small bottle of local sake, thinking it would be a perfect way to wind down after a day of exploration.

For lunch, I stopped at Eki-mae Shokudo, a local eatery known for its authentic Japanese cuisine. I opted for a set meal featuring regional specialties, savoring each bite as I soaked in the cozy atmosphere. It was a comforting and satisfying meal, a reminder of the simple pleasures of life.

Heike Yashiki Museum: Echoes of a Fallen Clan

With my stomach full and my spirit refreshed, I set off to the Heike Yashiki Museum of Folklore. This museum is dedicated to the Heike clan, a powerful family who played a pivotal role in Japanese history. After their defeat in the Genpei War, some members of the clan sought refuge in the remote Iya Valley, and this museum tells their story.

The museum itself is housed in a traditional thatched-roof house, built in 1867. As I stepped inside, I felt as though I had been transported back in time. The air was thick with history, and the artifacts on display offered a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the Heike warriors and their descendants. I saw traditional clothing, weaponry, and other historical objects, each with its own story to tell. The museum also featured a traditional irori hearth, which the owners still light every morning. I sat beside the hearth, feeling the warmth of the fire and imagining what life must have been like for the Heike people who once lived in this house. It was a truly immersive experience, one that brought history to life in a tangible way.

The Heike Yashiki Museum of Folklore is more than just a museum; it's a portal to the past, a place where the stories of the Heike clan come alive. Walking through the halls, I couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to these long-ago people, their struggles, and their triumphs. It was a humbling and inspiring experience, one that deepened my appreciation for Japanese history and culture. The gardens surrounding the house were lovely, with flowering trees that are said to be around 800 years old. It was a peaceful spot, perfect for reflecting on the history I had just absorbed.

As the day drew to a close, I treated myself to dinner at Restaurant&Cafe Riina. I enjoyed a delicious meal while reflecting on the day's adventures. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly welcoming.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Otsuka Museum of Art and take a ride on the Bizan Ropeway in Tokushima. I'm looking forward to seeing the art museum, and the ropeway promises stunning views of the city. I might even check out BAR OOKUNI for a nightcap.

Shikoku continues to surprise and delight me. It's a place where history and nature intertwine, creating a unique and unforgettable travel experience. I'm grateful for the opportunity to explore this hidden gem of Japan, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
