Explore the remote Iya Valley: Walk ancient vine bridges, savor local cuisine, and discover hidden gems in Shikoku's stunning landscape.
Through the Vines of Time
Today was all about immersing myself in the heart of Shikoku's Iya Valley, a place where history and nature intertwine to create an unforgettable experience. It’s a region that whispers tales of samurai, hidden refuges, and ancient traditions, all set against a backdrop of breathtaking mountain scenery. I was eager to explore the valley's famed vine bridges and sample the local flavors, hoping to capture the essence of this remote and beautiful corner of Japan.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Yoronotaki Gomenten. Fuelled up, I set off to explore the legendary Iya Valley. The journey itself was an adventure, the winding roads carving through the landscape offering tantalizing glimpses of the valley's beauty. I could see why this place was once a haven for the defeated Taira clan; it’s remote, rugged, and feels a world away from the bustling cities I'm more accustomed to.
The first major stop was the famed Vine Bridge, or Iya Kazurabashi. As I approached, the sheer ingenuity of this ancient structure struck me. Constructed from woven vines, it swayed gently above the Iya River, a testament to the resourcefulness of those who built it centuries ago. Legend has it that these bridges were first created by the Taira clan, offering a means of escape should they be pursued. While reinforced with steel cables these days for safety, crossing the bridge was still a thrilling experience, the gaps between the wooden slats providing a vertiginous view of the water below. I took my time, savoring the moment and imagining what it must have been like to cross this bridge centuries ago, with no safety net.

The Iya Valley is a place where time seems to slow down, allowing you to connect with nature and history in a profound way.
After conquering the Vine Bridge, I was ready for a bite to eat. I headed to Inonakanokawazu for lunch, eager to try some of the local cuisine. The restaurant was a charming spot, and I opted for a traditional Iya soba dish. The noodles were delicious, and the broth was rich and flavorful, providing a perfect energy boost for the afternoon's adventures. I made a mental note to try and recreate this dish back in Kelowna; it would be a welcome change from my usual brewery tour snacks.

With renewed vigor, I decided to visit the Mountain Bookshop. It was a unique experience browsing through the selection of books, each one seemingly hand-picked to reflect the spirit of the valley. I picked up a few titles on local history and folklore, hoping to delve deeper into the mysteries of Iya. It’s always a pleasure to find a place that celebrates both literature and the landscape it inhabits.

As the day drew to a close, I found myself at Dining Room Hibari for dinner. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the menu featured a range of local specialties. I decided to try a dish featuring Awa beef, known for its exquisite marbling and flavor. It was a culinary delight, the tender beef melting in my mouth with each bite. Paired with a local sake, it was the perfect way to end a day of exploration.

Reflecting on the day, I realized that the Iya Valley is more than just a scenic destination; it’s a place steeped in history and tradition. The vine bridges, the local cuisine, and the warm hospitality of the people all contribute to its unique charm. As I prepare to head to Matsuyama tomorrow, I know that the memories of Iya Valley will stay with me long after I leave.
Tomorrow, I'm off to Matsuyama, where the agenda includes a visit to the Dogo Onsen Main Building and Matsuyama Castle. I’m particularly excited about the onsen, as I’ve heard it’s one of the oldest and most beautiful in Japan. And perhaps I'll find a local craft beer at the Irish Pub Amontillado to wind down the day.
The sun has now set over Iya Valley. Goodnight!
Iya Valley has certainly earned a special place in my travel memories. It's a reminder that sometimes the most rewarding experiences are found in the most unexpected and remote corners of the world. I would recommend this trip to anyone!
