Day 9: Farewell Évora: Reflecting on a Journey Through Time
Join Jan and Lena as they conclude their Évora adventure, exploring ancient sites and savoring final tastes of Portugal's Alentejo.
A Fond Farewell to Évora
As our nine-day exploration of Évora draws to a close, Lena and I find ourselves reflecting on the incredible blend of history, culture, and culinary delights that this charming Portuguese city has offered. It’s amazing how a place can feel both ancient and vibrantly alive, all at once. Today was about soaking in the last moments, revisiting some favorite spots, and discovering a few hidden gems we’d missed along the way.
The day began with a leisurely breakfast at Alegrias e Vinho Tinto Botequim. It's a family-run restaurant, and you can feel the warmth and passion they put into their food. The *tapas*-style dishes were made with fresh, local ingredients. Lena enjoyed the honey mustard shrimp, while I couldn't resist the off-menu steak. It was the perfect way to start our final day, fueling up for more exploration. I was particularly impressed by the homemade butter served with the bread.
Our first stop was the Convent of the Carthusians. This serene location offered a peaceful escape from the bustling city center. The convent, with its austere architecture and tranquil atmosphere, provided a glimpse into the lives of the monks who once resided here. Wandering through the grounds, we admired the way the ancient aqueducts were incorporated into the walls. It was a humbling experience, contemplating the dedication and solitude that defined the Carthusian order. Although not all areas were accessible, the visit was a worthwhile experience.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quietest of places.
Next, we strolled through the Jardim Público de Évora. The public garden, recently renovated, was a delightful surprise. It’s a blend of nature, history, and architecture. The gardens were constructed between 1863 and 1867, on grounds that once served as the royal orchard of the Palace and the old Convent of São Francisco. We enjoyed the peacefulness, the beautiful trees, and even stumbled upon the Palácio D. Manuel and the Ruínas Fingidas de Cinatti. Lena was particularly charmed by the whimsical touches and the sense of history embedded in the landscape. We took a moment to relax by one of the small lakes, watching families and locals enjoying the pleasant afternoon.

For lunch, we chose O Antão, a restaurant known for its traditional Portuguese cuisine. The restaurant was cozy, with a modern decor. We shared a plate of *migas*, a traditional Alentejo dish made with bread, garlic, and pork, and some grilled cod. The flavors were rich and satisfying, a true taste of the region. The service was professional, and the prices were reasonable.

After lunch, we wandered to the Giraldo Square Fountain. Praça do Giraldo has been at the heart of city life for centuries. The square was named after Geraldo Sem Pavor (Gerald the Fearless), who conquered Évora from the Moors in 1165. The Renaissance-style monument dates back to 1570. Each spout is decorated with a face – four human and four mythical creatures. The fountain stands as a reminder of Évora's rich and complex past.

Before dinner, we made a stop at Gente da Minha Terra, a charming little shop on Rua 5 de Outubro. I was looking for a special souvenir to remind us of our trip. The shop features a variety of local crafts and artisanal products, from ceramics to textiles. Lena found a beautiful hand-painted tile, while I picked up a small leather-bound journal. The owner was incredibly friendly and helpful, sharing stories about the local artisans and their craft.

Our final dinner in Évora was at Botequim da Mouraria. This tiny restaurant, with only a handful of seats, is a true hidden gem. We arrived early to secure a spot at the counter, where we could watch the chef prepare our meal. We savored a selection of *petiscos* (Portuguese tapas), including local cheeses, cured meats, and grilled sardines. The atmosphere was cozy and convivial, with locals and tourists alike sharing stories and laughter. It was the perfect way to end our culinary journey through Évora.

As we walked back to Mar De AR Aqueduto Hotel, the city was quiet and peaceful. The hotel, with its blend of modern luxury and historic charm, had been the perfect base for our exploration. It was a lovely place to come back to each evening. We packed our bags, reminiscing about the incredible sights, sounds, and flavors we had experienced. From the ancient Roman Temple to the haunting Chapel of Bones, Évora had captivated us with its rich history and unique character. The local cuisine, with its hearty stews and fresh seafood, had tantalized our taste buds. And the warmth and hospitality of the Portuguese people had touched our hearts.

I realized I had forgotten to pack sunscreen before the trip, relying on the fact that Berlin hadn't been sunny for months. I will not make the same mistake again. I also forgot my portable charger, which was not ideal considering how many photos I took each day.
Évora is a city that stays with you long after you leave. It’s a place where the past and present intertwine, creating a magical atmosphere that is both captivating and inspiring. As we prepare to leave for Lisbon tomorrow, we carry with us a treasure trove of memories and a deep appreciation for the beauty and charm of Portugal’s Alentejo region. I’m already looking forward to sharing more of our adventures on Evendo, hoping to inspire others to explore this remarkable corner of the world. Until next time, *adeus*, Évora!
Tomorrow marks the end of our trip, and we'll be heading back to Berlin from Lisbon. It will be good to be back, but we will never forget our time in Évora.
