Savoring the Alentejo: Wine, Food, and History in Évora

Today was a day dedicated to indulgence and exploration, perfectly encapsulating the charm of Évora. Lena and I set out to discover more of the Alentejo region’s renowned wines and savor its authentic cuisine, while also soaking in the historical ambiance that makes this area so special. It was a day of sensory delights, from the rolling vineyards to the cozy corners of traditional restaurants.

Our day began, as many delightful days do, with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante A Bruxa D'Évora. The name, which translates to The Witch of Évora, intrigued us, and the promise of traditional Portuguese fare sealed the deal. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a rustic charm that made us feel right at home. I opted for the *Sopa do dia*, while Lena chose the *Ovos com farinheira*. Both were delicious and gave us the perfect start to a day of exploring. The service was excellent, and the staff were incredibly friendly, making us feel welcome.

With our appetites sated, we ventured out to Cartuxa - Quinta de Valbom - Fundação Eugénio de Almeida. This winery is steeped in history, dating back to the 16th century when it served as a retreat for Jesuit Brothers. The Eugénio de Almeida family purchased it in the 19th century, preserving its architectural integrity while expanding its wine production. We took a guided tour, learning about the foundation's social initiatives and the meticulous winemaking process. The wines of Cartuxa are produced within the Alentejo sub-region of Évora and have long been legendary within Portugal. I was particularly impressed by their dedication to quality and tradition. We enjoyed a tasting of several wines, including the Cartuxa White 2022, which had a bright and lemony color with a fresh fragrance of citrus and tropical fruit. It was a memorable experience that deepened our appreciation for Portuguese wines.

Next on our itinerary was Quinta do Carmo, another esteemed winery in the Alentejo region. This estate, located in Estremoz, spans 1000 hectares, encompassing vineyards, olive groves, and cork oaks. The winery itself is a state-of-the-art facility where they produce some of the region's best wines. We took a guided tour of the winery and the Jardim das Montanhas Mágicas, a garden that blends contemporary art with the natural beauty of the Alentejo cork oak forest. The fusion of art and nature was truly inspiring. We also enjoyed a premium wine tasting, sampling four different wines paired with olive oil produced on the estate. The Quinta do Carmo White 2023 was particularly delightful, with its elegant straw yellow color, fresh acidity, and smoky notes. Lena and I both appreciated the care and craftsmanship that goes into each bottle.

Our final winery visit for the day was to Fitapreta Vinhos, a place where culture and modernization blend seamlessly. The winery is housed in a stunning 14th-century palace, offering a picturesque backdrop for wine tasting. We learned about their commitment to sustainable practices and minimal spraying, ensuring the health of their vineyards. The vineyards have textures that are rich in shale and minerals. We sampled a variety of wines, including red, white, rosé, and sparkling, each reflecting the unique character of the Alentejo region. I found their approach to winemaking—giving equal importance to winemakers and wine growers—particularly admirable.

By late afternoon, we were ready for a late lunch and chose Cavalariça Évora, nestled in the historic Palace of the Dukes of Cadaval. The restaurant's interior, designed by Jacques Grange, was stunning, with hand-painted ceilings and vibrant mosaics. The Andalusian-style courtyard, designed by Louis Benech, added to the ambiance with lush greenery and Moorish elements. The menu was inventive, with a focus on vegetables and fermentation. We shared several dishes, including empanadas filled with local lamb and a creatively reinvented pork shoulder. The flavors were unique and unforgettable. The restaurant is influenced by its location, both in terms of ingredients and in terms of ideas.

As evening approached, we strolled through Évora's charming streets, eventually finding ourselves at Bar Culpa Tua. This bar is known for its relaxed atmosphere and excellent drinks. The location of Bar Culpa Tua makes it easy to reach by any transport. We enjoyed a couple of gin and tonics while soaking in the local vibe. It was the perfect spot to unwind after a day of wine tasting and exploration. The cheerful staff welcomed visitors all year round.

For dinner, we decided on A Choupana, a rustic restaurant known for its traditional Alentejo cuisine. The restaurant was small and cozy, adorned with agricultural objects and regional tableware. The menu changes daily, offering amazing meals at great value. I opted for the *Carne de Porco à Alentejana*, while Lena chose the *Cozido à Portuguesa*. Both dishes were hearty and flavorful, providing a perfect end to our culinary journey. A Choupana is one of my favorite restaurants in Évora.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much Évora has to offer. From its historical sites to its world-class wineries and authentic cuisine, there’s something for every traveler. I am already looking forward to tomorrow, our final day in Évora. We plan to visit the Convent of the Carthusians, explore the Jardim Público de Évora, and admire the Giraldo Square Fountain. I also want to pick up a few souvenirs at Gente da Minha Terra before we depart. I am sure it will be another day filled with unforgettable memories.

Lena and I agreed that this trip was exactly what we needed—a perfect blend of history, culture, and relaxation.
