Lost in the Blue Medina

Today was all about diving deeper into the heart of Chefchaouen. After three days of wandering, Lena and I felt ready to truly immerse ourselves in the local culture. We planned a day of exploration, from vibrant squares to hidden corners, and it turned out to be everything we hoped for and more. It's amazing how a city painted in shades of blue can evoke such a sense of calm and wonder.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Cremeri Elmaataoui. This charming spot offered a taste of local pastries and creamy delights, setting the perfect tone for our adventures. The café was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day with something sweet. Lena opted for a traditional Moroccan pastry, while I enjoyed a refreshing juice. It was the perfect way to fuel up before delving into the blue-washed streets.

After breakfast, we made our way to Place El Haouta. This square is a vibrant hub of activity, surrounded by beautifully maintained blue buildings. The name Hawta, meaning surrounded or walled in, perfectly describes the character of this square. The atmosphere was lively, with street vendors and artisans showcasing their talents. We spent some time admiring the local handicrafts and soaking in the unique ambiance. The square is adorned with blue-tiled buildings featuring classic arches and iron grills, creating a delightful and distinctive atmosphere.

The beauty of Chefchaouen isn't just in its colors, but in the way it invites you to slow down and savor every moment.

Next on our list was a guided tour with Blue Medina Tours. We met our guide, a local who shared fascinating stories about the town’s history and culture. As we meandered through the narrow, winding streets, we learned about the blend of Berber and Spanish influences that shaped Chefchaouen. The tour provided a deeper understanding of the town's unique architecture and the symbolism behind the blue hues.

For lunch, we stopped at Bab Souk. This restaurant offered a taste of traditional Moroccan dishes, and we were eager to try some local specialties. I decided on a flavorful tagine, while Lena chose the aromatic couscous. The warm ambiance and friendly staff made our dining experience even more enjoyable. The restaurant's decor reflected the vibrant culture of Morocco, featuring intricate tile work and traditional furnishings.

After lunch, we continued our exploration of the medina. The streets were filled with vibrant colors, and the air was filled with the scent of spices and local cuisine. We stumbled upon hidden courtyards and charming doorways, each offering a unique photo opportunity. Lena, with her graphic designer's eye, was particularly captivated by the intricate details and the play of light and shadow on the blue walls.

As the afternoon wore on, we decided to find a spot to relax and enjoy the sunset. We had heard about Sunset at Sunset, a bar known for its breathtaking views. We made our way to the bar and secured a spot on the terrace. As the sun began to set, the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors. We sipped on refreshing drinks and watched as the blue hues of Chefchaouen deepened, creating a magical atmosphere. The bar was open from 10 AM to 6:30 PM, providing ample opportunity for guests to enjoy a leisurely afternoon or an early evening visit.

For dinner, we chose BILMOS, a restaurant recommended for its diverse menu and cozy ambiance. We started with traditional Moroccan salads, followed by grilled meats and savory tagines. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. The outdoor seating option allowed us to soak in the lively atmosphere of Place Outa el Hammam.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the natural beauty surrounding Chefchaouen with a visit to Parc National de Talassemtane and a hike to Jebel El-Kelaa Summit. Lena is particularly excited about capturing the landscapes with her camera, and I am looking forward to the physical challenge of the hike.
