Reaching New Heights in Chefchaouen

Today was all about challenging myself physically and soaking in the natural beauty surrounding Chefchaouen. Lena and I ventured into Parc National de Talassemtane. It was a day filled with breathtaking views, delicious Moroccan cuisine, and a deeper appreciation for this region's unique charm.

Our day began with breakfast at MIDO'S. It's a cozy spot known for its friendly owner and willingness to veganize almost anything on the menu. I opted for a hearty omelet, while Lena enjoyed a fruit salad with yogurt. Fuelled up, we set off towards Parc National de Talassemtane. The drive itself was scenic, offering glimpses of the Rif Mountains.

Talassemtane National Park is a gem. Established in 2004, it aims to conserve Morocco's threatened fir forests. As we entered the park, the air was noticeably fresher, filled with the scent of pine and earth. The park is home to diverse wildlife, including monkeys, otters and over 100 species of birds. Although we didn't spot any monkeys, we heard their calls echoing through the trees.

The main goal for the day was to hike to the Jebel El-Kelaa Summit. The trail started with a gentle incline, gradually becoming steeper as we ascended. The paths were well-marked, but sturdy hiking boots were definitely a plus. I was glad I'd packed mine, though I did feel a twinge of regret for not bringing my hiking poles from Berlin. The higher we climbed, the more panoramic the views became. We could see Chefchaouen nestled below, its blue buildings standing out against the green landscape.

The views from the summit were simply awe-inspiring, a reward well worth the effort.

Reaching the summit of Jebel El-Kelaa was an incredible feeling. At 1616 meters, the 360-degree views were breathtaking. We could see the Rif Mountains stretching out in all directions, and on a clear day, it’s said you can even see across the Mediterranean to Spain. Lena and I spent a good while at the top, snapping photos and simply soaking in the scenery.

The descent was just as rewarding, offering different perspectives of the region. We chose a different path for the return journey, making it a circular route. Along the way, we encountered some friendly locals and admired the unique vegetation. The whole hike took us about 6-8 hours, a good workout for a software developer like me, who spends most of his days behind a screen.
Restaurant Ali Baba. This place came highly recommended, and it didn't disappoint. I had a vegetarian tagine, packed with fresh vegetables and aromatic spices. Lena opted for the couscous with vegetables, which she described as flavorful and perfectly tender. The restaurant had a charming atmosphere, and the staff were very welcoming.

After lunch, we strolled through the town, taking in the sights and sounds of Chefchaouen. We stopped by a shop selling original Moroccan clothes. Lena, with her keen eye for design, was particularly interested in the colorful textiles and traditional garments. She ended up buying a beautiful scarf, handwoven with intricate patterns. I admired the craftsmanship but resisted the urge to buy anything, sticking to my pragmatic nature.

For dinner, we chose Restaurant Hamsa. This place is known for its Mediterranean and Moroccan cuisine, with plenty of vegan options. I went for the falafel plate, while Lena tried the vegan tagine. Both dishes were delicious, and the rooftop terrace offered stunning views of the Grand Mosque and the town square. The atmosphere was relaxed and the service was excellent.

As the day drew to a close, we reflected on our adventures. The hike to Jebel El-Kelaa was challenging but incredibly rewarding, offering panoramic views of the region. The local cuisine was a delight, and the warmth of the Moroccan people made us feel welcome. It was a day of contrasts, from the physical exertion of the hike to the relaxed atmosphere of the town.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Park Sidi Abdelhamid and Bab Chaouen. I'm looking forward to more leisurely activities after today's vigorous hike. We might even check out The Magic Lamp House of Aladin for a taste of the local nightlife. But for now, it's time to rest and recharge for another day of exploration in this beautiful blue city.

During the day, I realized I missed having a travel adapter for my electronic devices and a portable power bank. It would have been useful during the long hike to keep my camera and phone charged. I'll make sure to buy those tomorrow.

Before falling asleep, Lena and I reminisced about our day. We agreed that the highlight was reaching the summit of Jebel El-Kelaa and taking in the breathtaking views. It was a moment we'll cherish for a long time.
