Island Contemplations

Today was a day for reflection, a pause amidst the vigorous exploration of Yakushima's forests. I decided to delve into the island's history and culture, and to soak in some coastal scenery. It's amazing how quickly one can feel a connection to a place, even when traveling solo. I'm finding that these quieter days offer a different, but equally rewarding, perspective.

My morning began at Aqua Cafe in Miyanoura for breakfast. The cafe was cozy, with a lovely view of the surrounding area. I ordered a simple breakfast set, which included toast, eggs, and a small salad. The coffee was particularly good, a welcome jolt to start the day. It’s interesting how a simple breakfast can set the tone for the entire day. I overheard some locals chatting about the weather and upcoming festivals, a reminder of the vibrant community that thrives here. I made a mental note to check if there were any local events happening that I could attend.

With a full stomach and a sense of purpose, I drove to the East China Sea Observatory. The drive itself was scenic, winding through lush greenery and offering glimpses of the coastline. When I arrived, the view was breathtaking. The observatory offered a panoramic vista of the East China Sea, and on a clear day, you can apparently see the volcanic islands of Kuchinoerabujima, Kuroshima, Iwojima and Takeshima in the distance. Today, the visibility was good enough to see Kuchinoerabujima, its volcanic peak shrouded in a light haze. The vastness of the ocean was humbling, a reminder of nature’s grandeur. I spent some time simply gazing out at the horizon, lost in thought.

The beauty of Yakushima lies not only in its ancient forests, but also in its ability to inspire introspection and connection.

Next on my itinerary was the Yakushima Museum of History and Folklore. Located near the Miyanoura River, the museum provided a fascinating glimpse into the island’s past. The exhibits showcased artifacts from the Jomon period to the present day, including pottery, textiles, and fishing tools. I was particularly intrigued by the displays on traditional festivals, which featured costumes, masks, and a large rice straw rope used in tug-of-war competitions between villages. It was interesting to learn about the islanders' way of life, their customs, and their deep connection to the natural world. The museum also had a replica of a traditional house from nearby Kuchinoerabu Island, offering a glimpse into the daily lives of the people who lived there before World War II. Although the signs were primarily in Japanese, the English pamphlet helped me understand the exhibits. I learned about the unique subspecies of monkeys and deer native to Yakushima, and the traditional methods used for logging the massive Yakusugi cedar trees. It struck me how much the island's history is intertwined with its natural environment.

For lunch, I decided to try the Yakushima Gallery Restaurant. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere and a menu featuring local specialties. I opted for the flying fish ramen, a local delicacy. The broth was rich and flavorful, and the flying fish added a unique texture and taste. While enjoying my meal, I overheard a couple discussing their hiking plans for the next day. They were planning to tackle the Shiratani Unsuikyo trail, which I had explored a few days earlier. It brought back fond memories of my trek through the moss-covered forest. I smiled, knowing they were in for a treat.

After lunch, I took a leisurely stroll along the Miyanoura River, enjoying the peaceful scenery. The riverbanks were lined with lush vegetation, and the sound of the water flowing was soothing. I spotted a group of children playing near the bridge, their laughter echoing through the air. It was a simple, yet heartwarming scene.

As evening approached, I made my way to Anbo to try SamPotei for dinner. This tavern was recommended as a good place to sample local dishes. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming. I ordered a selection of small plates, including grilled flying fish, venison skewers, and local vegetables. Each dish was prepared with care and bursting with flavor. The grilled flying fish was a particular highlight, its smoky taste enhanced by a squeeze of lemon. I struck up a conversation with a local sitting next to me, and we chatted about the island's history, culture, and natural attractions. He shared some interesting stories about the local wildlife and recommended a few hidden gems to visit before I leave Yakushima.

To cap off the evening, I decided to check out Cafe&Bar RainTree, known for its unique blend of café and karaoke bar. The place was buzzing with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the lively atmosphere. I ordered a local craft beer and listened to the karaoke performances, which ranged from surprisingly good to hilariously off-key. It was a fun and relaxed way to end the day. I even considered taking the stage myself, but decided to save my vocal talents for another time.

As I walked back to my guesthouse, I reflected on the day’s experiences. From the panoramic views at the East China Sea Observatory to the cultural insights at the Yakushima Museum of History and Folklore, it had been a day of discovery and contemplation. I felt a deeper connection to Yakushima, its people, and its history. Tomorrow, I plan to visit Yakushima Shrine and Yahazudake Shrine. I am also hoping to do some shopping at Yakushima BLESS.

This solo journey continues to surprise me, revealing new facets of this magical island each day. I am grateful for the opportunity to explore, learn, and connect with this unique corner of the world.

I am also reminded that I need to call Lena soon. I am sure she would love to hear about my day.
