Whispers of the Past, Echoes of Today

Today was a day of diving deep into Kanazawa's history, a blend of secret fortifications and elegant entertainment districts. It’s funny, isn't it? How cities can hold so many layers, each whispering stories of different times. As an antique restorer, I feel a particular kinship with places like this, where the past isn't just remembered, it's still palpable.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at A_RESTAURANT(ア・レストラン), a place that promised a unique culinary experience. It was a delightful start, fueling me up for the adventures ahead. From there, I set off to unravel the mysteries of Myouryuji, famously known as the Ninja Temple.

The Ninja Temple, or Myouryuji, was nothing like what I expected. Despite its nickname, it has absolutely nothing to do with Ninjas. Instead, it was built as a secret armed outpost in 1643 to protect the city from invaders. As someone who appreciates architecture, I was fascinated by how the temple was designed to look like a two-story building from the outside, but in reality, it's four stories tall with a hidden watchtower. It was built by the Maeda family who ruled the Kaga domain. Our guide led us through a maze of hidden tunnels, secret rooms, and trap doors, each designed to confuse and disorient any potential intruders. The temple's well, rumored to connect to Kanazawa Castle, added another layer of intrigue. It was a marvel of engineering and deception, a testament to the ingenuity of the Edo period.

The Ninja Temple is a reminder that even the most peaceful-looking places can hold hidden depths and untold stories.

After the Ninja Temple, I ventured into the Nishi Chaya District, one of Kanazawa's three geisha districts. This district, established in 1820, offered a glimpse into the world of traditional Japanese entertainment. As I strolled along the main street, lined with two-story wooden chaya houses, I could almost hear the echoes of shamisen music and geisha laughter.

I visited the Kanazawa Nishi-chaya Museum, a building that recreates a traditional chaya house. It provided a fascinating insight into the lives of the geiko (the local name for geisha) who once entertained wealthy patrons here. The museum showcased the well-appointed rooms where geiko entertained their clients.

For lunch, I decided to try Turban Curry Main Store, known for its Kanazawa-style curry. This curry is unique because it is a thick, rich, dark curry sauce served on stainless steel plate, usually topped with a pork cutlet. I opted for the L-set Curry, a generous serving of pork cutlet, hamburger steak, and sausage. It was a hearty and satisfying meal, perfect for refueling after a morning of exploration.

As evening approached, I found myself drawn back to the Nishi Chaya District. In the twilight, the district transformed into something magical. The soft glow of lanterns illuminated the wooden teahouses, and the faint sound of shamisen music filled the air. It was easy to imagine what life must have been like in this district centuries ago, when geishas entertained guests with music, dance, and conversation. The Nishi Chaya district was significantly less crowded than the other Geisha districts, which allowed for a more intimate and personal experience.

Before dinner, I decided to stop by JIGGER BAR St.Louis for a drink. It was a cozy and intimate space, perfect for unwinding after a busy day. I enjoyed a carefully crafted cocktail, savoring the moment and reflecting on all that I had seen and learned.

Dinner was at Kagaya Kanazawa, a restaurant that promised an authentic taste of Kaga cuisine. They use local vegetables and seafood from the Sea of Japan. The meal was a culinary journey through the region's flavors, a perfect end to a day of cultural immersion. I enjoyed the Kaiseki cuisine, a traditional multi-course Japanese dinner.

As I walked back to the APA Hotel Kanazawa Nomachi, I thought about tomorrow's adventure. I'll be venturing further afield to Shirakawa-go, a village known for its traditional gassho-style farmhouses. I am also planning to visit the Ogimachi Castle Observation Deck to capture a panoramic view of the village. But for now, I'm content to rest and dream of ninja temples and twilight geishas.
