Journey to Shirakawa-go

Today was an immersion into the heart of rural Japan, a journey to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Shirakawa-go. It was a day filled with stunning landscapes, unique architecture, and the simple pleasures of countryside living. Leaving the familiar streets of Kanazawa behind, I embarked on a trip that promised a glimpse into a bygone era, a promise that Shirakawa-go wholeheartedly delivered.

The morning began with a hearty breakfast at Umi & Tsuchi. After a satisfying meal, I set out for Omicho Market. The market was a vibrant tapestry of sights, sounds, and smells. Fishmongers called out their wares, the scent of fresh seafood filled the air, and the colorful displays of produce were a feast for the eyes. It's been operating for over 300 years, and you could feel the history. I picked up a few local snacks for the road, eager to taste the flavors of Kanazawa as I ventured into the countryside.

The journey to Shirakawa-go was a scenic delight. The bus wound its way through lush green valleys, alongside crystal-clear rivers, offering panoramic views of the Japanese Alps. The landscape was dotted with traditional farmhouses, their thatched roofs blending seamlessly with the natural surroundings. I could feel the air getting cleaner, crisper, a welcome change from the city.

Arriving in Shirakawa-go felt like stepping into a postcard. The village is nestled in a valley, surrounded by mountains, with the iconic gassho-style farmhouses scattered across the landscape. These unique structures, with their steeply pitched roofs resembling hands clasped in prayer, are perfectly designed to withstand the heavy snowfall of the region. It was easy to see why this place was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The remote mountain villages with their gassho-style houses in Shirakawa-go and Gokayama on the Hida Highlands were registered as UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites in 1995.

I started my exploration with a visit to the Ogimachi Castle Observation Deck. A short but steep climb brought me to the top, and the view was simply breathtaking. From this vantage point, the entire village unfolded before me – a patchwork of rice paddies, farmhouses, and winding streams, all framed by the majestic mountains. I spent a long time up there, just soaking in the beauty and tranquility of the scene.

Wandering through the village itself was like walking through a living museum. Many of the farmhouses are open to the public, offering a glimpse into traditional Japanese life. I visited Wada House, one of the largest and best-preserved examples of gassho-style architecture. Inside, I marveled at the intricate wooden beams and the spacious attic, once used for silkworm cultivation. It was fascinating to learn about the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the people who built and lived in these homes.

Lunch was at Spice Box, and it proved to be an excellent choice. The aromas of curry and spices wafted through the air as I stepped inside, instantly transporting me back to my travels in Southeast Asia. I ordered a spicy chicken curry with naan bread, and it was absolutely delicious. A perfect blend of flavors and a welcome change from the Japanese cuisine I'd been enjoying.

After lunch, I spent some time exploring the local shops, browsing through handcrafted souvenirs and local products. I picked up a few small gifts for Marie and Thomas, wanting to bring back a piece of Shirakawa-go for them to enjoy. I imagined Marie arranging flowers in a new vase, and Thomas displaying a miniature gassho-style house on his desk.

As the afternoon wore on, I found myself reflecting on the simple beauty and peacefulness of Shirakawa-go. It was a place where time seemed to slow down, where the rhythms of nature dictated the pace of life. It was a reminder of the importance of preserving our cultural heritage and cherishing the traditions of the past.

For dinner, I decided to treat myself to a teppanyaki experience at Teppanyaki ‘Icho’. Located on the 29th floor of Hotel Nikko Kanazawa, the restaurant offered stunning views of the city. I watched as the skilled chef prepared a delicious meal of grilled Wagyu beef and fresh seafood right before my eyes. The flavors were exquisite, and the presentation was impeccable. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

As I head back to the APA Hotel Kanazawa Nomachi, I thought about tomorrow's itinerary. Gokayama and the World Heritage Suganuma Gassho-zukuri Village are on the cards. More gassho-style houses, more stunning scenery, and more opportunities to immerse myself in the culture of rural Japan. I'm also planning to check out Bar Spoon in the evening, for a nightcap.

Today was a reminder that sometimes the most rewarding travel experiences are the ones that take you off the beaten path, that allow you to connect with nature and immerse yourself in a different way of life. Shirakawa-go is a true gem, a place that will stay with me long after I leave its tranquil valley. It's a place I hope to return to someday, perhaps with Marie and Thomas, to share its beauty and serenity with the people I love.

I'm grateful for the opportunity to have experienced this special place, and I look forward to sharing more of my adventures in Kanazawa with you soon.

The weather in Shirakawa-go in June is generally mild, with average temperatures ranging from 14°C to 23°C. However, it's also the rainy season, so expect some showers. I was lucky to have a mostly sunny day, with just a few brief drizzles. I was glad I had packed my light jacket and comfortable walking shoes, essential items for exploring the village.
