A River Runs Through It

Today was all about embracing the rhythm of Hoi An, a town that seems to pulse with the gentle flow of the Thu Bồn River. It's amazing how a single waterway can weave itself so deeply into the fabric of a place, shaping its history, culture, and the very soul of its people. I was eager to explore this connection, to see Hoi An from a different perspective, and to capture the essence of this ancient town as the sun dipped below the horizon.

My day began, as it often does, with a hearty breakfast. I found myself at the Red Dragon Restaurant and Cooking Class, a place buzzing with early morning energy [i]. While I didn't partake in the cooking class, the breakfast was fantastic. A simple bowl of *cao lầu*, the local noodle dish, was enough to set me up for the day. It's funny; I remember Marie once tried to recreate *cao lầu* back in Antwerp. It was a valiant effort, but something about the unique water source here in Hoi An makes it impossible to replicate the authentic flavor back home. It's these little nuances that make traveling so rewarding.

With a full stomach, I set out to explore the heart of Hoi An, drawn towards the allure of the Thu Bồn River. The river, often called the “Mother River,” is the lifeblood of this region. Originating from the towering Ngoc Linh Mountain, it has sustained the local fishing community for generations. The area surrounding the river teems with life, a vibrant mix of locals and tourists all drawn to its magnetic charm. I strolled along Bach Dang Street, observing the bustling activity, the colorful boats bobbing gently on the water, and the lively markets nearby. It was a feast for the senses, and I found myself captivated by the energy of the place.

Before lunch, I wanted to find some unique souvenirs to take back home. I stumbled upon Hart Hoi An - Upcycled Home Decor, a charming little shop with a big heart. As an antique restorer, I have a soft spot for businesses that breathe new life into old items. Hart collaborates with ethnic tribes in Vietnam, upcycling natural materials into beautiful and culturally rich items. I ended up buying a few small pieces, each telling its own captivating story. I am always drawn to items with a story.

Lunch beckoned, and I decided to try Little Faifo Restaurant. I opted for another local specialty, *bánh mì*. It was a simple sandwich, but the explosion of flavors was incredible [i]. It reminded me of the simple pleasures in life, much like the ones I experience when I am cycling through the Antwerp port.

The afternoon was dedicated to the river itself. I decided to experience the Thu Bồn River up close with a boat trip. I headed to Bach Dang street quay in the Old Town, where many boats were available for hire. Hopping aboard a traditional wooden boat, I embarked on a leisurely cruise along the Thu Bồn River. The gentle rocking of the boat, the cool breeze on my face, and the stunning scenery all combined to create a sense of serenity. As we glided along the water, I watched the local fishermen casting their nets, the children playing by the riverbanks, and the ancient houses lining the shore. It was like stepping back in time, witnessing a way of life that has remained largely unchanged for centuries.

As the sun began its descent, I made my way to the Sunset View Point. Perched atop a gentle rise, the viewpoint offered a panoramic vista of the surrounding landscape. The sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors, with hues of orange, pink, and purple reflecting off the water. It was a breathtaking sight, and I felt a sense of peace wash over me as I watched the day come to an end. It was a moment of pure tranquility, a reminder of the simple beauty that exists in the world.

With the sun now below the horizon, it was time to experience another Hoi An tradition: the lantern boat ride. As darkness descended, the town transformed into a magical wonderland, with colorful lanterns illuminating the streets and reflecting on the water. I boarded a small wooden boat, adorned with silk lanterns, and set off on a mesmerizing journey along the Hoai River. The gentle rocking of the boat, the soft glow of the lanterns, and the enchanting atmosphere created a truly unforgettable experience.

As we floated along the river, I released a paper lantern into the water, making a silent wish as it drifted away. It’s a tradition that is both beautiful and meaningful, a symbol of hope and good fortune. The experience was incredibly moving, and I felt a deep connection to the town and its people. It reminded me of lighting candles with Marie and Thomas during the holidays, a simple act that brings us closer together.

Dinner was at Lim Dining Room, a restaurant known for its authentic Vietnamese cuisine [i]. I savored every bite, reflecting on the day's adventures. The flavors were bold and vibrant, a testament to the region's rich culinary heritage. I thought about Marie and how she would have loved to try all these new dishes. I made a mental note to bring her back here someday, to share these experiences with her.

As I walked back to my hotel, the Hadana Boutique Resort HoiAn (former Belle Maison Hadana HoiAn), I couldn't help but smile [i]. Today had been a perfect blend of cultural immersion, scenic beauty, and serene moments. I had explored the heart of Hoi An, witnessed its traditions, and connected with its people. It was an experience that I would cherish forever. Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Hoi An Sculpture Promenade, the Memory Statue of Kazimierz Kwiatkowski, and the Quan Cong Temple. I am excited to see what other treasures this town holds.

Before heading to sleep, I realized I forgot my Vietnamese phrasebook and portable phone charger. It's a bit annoying, but I will manage without them.
