A Farewell to Luxor

As my Luxor sojourn draws to a close, I found myself reflecting on the incredible journey through time I've experienced. Today was about soaking in the last moments, revisiting familiar paths, and letting the spirit of this ancient city seep into my soul. It was a day of simple pleasures, of wandering without a strict agenda, and allowing Luxor to reveal its final secrets to me.

My day began, as most days here have, with a delightful breakfast at the Sonesta St George Hotel Luxor. I savored the familiar flavors, knowing it would be my last morning indulging in their hospitality. Fuelled up, I decided to dedicate the morning to the Avenue of the Rams.

It felt fitting to bookend my trip with a return to this magnificent pathway, allowing the grandeur of the sphinxes to leave a lasting impression.

The Avenue of the Rams, connecting Luxor Temple and Karnak Temple, is a powerful testament to the ambition and artistry of the ancient Egyptians. Walking along the 2.7-kilometer road, I was struck once again by the sheer scale of the project and the meticulous detail of each ram-headed sphinx. It's easy to imagine the processions that once took place here, the priests and pharaohs making their way between the temples in a spectacle of religious fervor. The avenue which has existed for almost 3,600 years, was once buried under layers of sand that accumulated over the centuries since it was first constructed sometime as early as the year 1570 BC during the era of the New Kingdom.

To walk the Avenue of the Rams is to walk through the heart of ancient Egypt, feeling the pulse of a civilization that continues to captivate us millennia later.

I took my time, photographing the sphinxes from every angle, trying to capture their stoic beauty against the backdrop of the modern city. It's a strange juxtaposition, the ancient and the contemporary, but it's one that defines Luxor. As an antique restorer, I couldn't help but marvel at the craftsmanship and the enduring quality of the stone. These statues have stood for thousands of years, weathering storms and the passage of time, and they still exude an aura of power and majesty.

After immersing myself in the Avenue of the Rams, I felt drawn to the Luxor corniche.

The corniche, a waterfront promenade that runs along the east bank of the Nile River, is a vibrant hub of activity, a place where locals and tourists mingle, and where the rhythm of daily life unfolds against the backdrop of the river. I strolled along the palm-lined pathway, taking in the sights and sounds. Feluccas glided across the water, their white sails billowing in the breeze. Families gathered for picnics, their laughter echoing along the bank. Vendors hawked their wares, offering everything from souvenirs to freshly squeezed juice. The area is particularly lively in the evenings, when the local vendors set up their stalls and street performers entertain passersby. The Corniche is also the departure point for many Nile River cruises and boat tours. Visitors can take a traditional felucca boat ride on the Nile, which is a great way to experience the river and see the city from a different perspective.

I paused to watch a group of children playing football, their energy infectious. It reminded me of Thomas, my son, and the simple joys of childhood. I made a mental note to bring him back here someday, to share the wonders of Luxor with him. Marie, my wife, would also adore this place, I am sure. Her librarian's heart would be thrilled by the ancient history. Maybe next time, we can all come together.

For lunch, I ventured to Sofra, a restaurant recommended for its authentic Egyptian cuisine.

The restaurant had a charming Middle Eastern style vibe. I had to book several days in advance to secure a table. I was pleasantly surprised that there were only two other tables with dining customers on the rooftop terrace where I was seated, which contributed towards an exquisite service from the waiters throughout my experience. I savored a Tagin Lahma Bil Kawerma, a tagine-style veal and pearl onion dish in a spicy tomato sauce with red peppers and garlic was absolutely amazing. The tomato sauce was not too spicy and the flavors of the onions, peppers, garlic and tomato all stewed together in the pot created a beautiful sauce for the veal, which was so tender and flavorful; an absolute winner. Each bite was a burst of flavor, a testament to the rich culinary heritage of Egypt. It was the perfect way to refuel after a morning of exploration.

As the afternoon waned, I found myself seeking a quiet spot to reflect on my journey. I settled into a cozy cafe overlooking the Nile, nursing a cup of strong Egyptian coffee. The sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the water. The sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant hues, from fiery orange to soft lavender. It was a breathtaking sight, a fitting farewell to Luxor.

Dinner was at Freedom restaurant, a local favorite known for its friendly atmosphere and traditional dishes.

The service was great and the staff was very friendly. The prices were fair and the atmosphere was nice. I enjoyed a hearty meal of grilled meats and fresh salads, savoring the simple flavors and the warmth of the Egyptian hospitality.

My final evening in Luxor concluded with a visit to the VIP CLUB LUXOR.

I decided to treat myself to a nightcap before heading back to the hotel. The club offered a relaxed atmosphere and a chance to unwind after a day of sightseeing. I sipped on a refreshing drink, listening to the music and soaking in the ambiance. It was a pleasant way to end my trip, a final toast to the wonders of Luxor.

As I packed my bags, I felt a sense of gratitude for the experiences I've had here. Luxor has exceeded all my expectations, offering a glimpse into a world of ancient history, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality. I've learned so much, not just about the pharaohs and temples, but about the resilience and spirit of the Egyptian people. I will take these memories with me, cherishing them as I return to my life in Antwerp.

Tomorrow, I'll be heading to the airport, ready to embark on the journey back home. While I'm eager to see Marie and Thomas again, a part of me will remain in Luxor, forever captivated by its timeless beauty.

This solo trip has been a profound experience, allowing me to connect with history on a personal level. As I prepare to leave, I carry with me not just photographs and souvenirs, but a renewed sense of wonder and a deeper appreciation for the stories that the past can tell. Luxor, you have been unforgettable.

Until next time, may the spirit of ancient Egypt continue to inspire us all.
