Adieu, Blue Pearl!

As my Moroccan journey draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences Chefchaouen has offered. Today was a day of contrasts, blending the serenity of nature with the vibrant energy of the town's cultural heart. It's hard to believe our eleven days here are already up; it feels like just yesterday Klaus and I were marveling at the blue-washed streets for the first time.

Our final day began, as many others had, with a delightful breakfast at Toda Creperie & Ice Cream. I savored one last Nutella crepe, while Klaus enjoyed his usual coffee. It's become a comforting ritual, starting our day amidst the sweet aromas and friendly chatter of this charming spot. Toda Creperie is known for its tasty dishes and offers a range of options from savory and sweet crepes to artisanal ice creams. Fueled up, we were ready to embrace the natural beauty just outside the city.

Jebel Bouhachem Nature Reserve was our first destination, and what a breathtaking experience it was! The reserve is known for its rich biodiversity and picturesque landscapes. We decided to drive with the group, enjoying the scenic views along the way. As we entered the reserve, the air grew crisp and clean, a welcome change from the bustling medina. The reserve spans a vast area of greenery and rugged terrain, offering stunning vistas of rolling hills, dense forests and dramatic cliffs.

We chose a moderate hiking trail, wanting to soak in as much of the scenery as possible. The trails offer breathtaking viewpoints that showcase the reserve's natural beauty. Towering oak and pine trees lined our path, and the only sounds were the rustling of leaves and the occasional birdsong. I even managed to spot a few interesting birds, though Klaus, with his archeological focus, was more interested in the rock formations. I made a mental note to bring my forgotten travel guidebook next time, as it would have been useful to identify the various flora and fauna we encountered. I really should have remembered my portable charger too, as I was trying to conserve my phone battery!

In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.

After our invigorating hike, we drove back towards Chefchaouen, our stomachs rumbling with anticipation for lunch. Restaurant Bab Ssour was our chosen spot, drawn in by its reputation for traditional Moroccan cuisine. We were not disappointed! The restaurant had a lovely environment and friendly staff. I opted for the Moroccan Chicken Tajin, a flavorful stew of chicken, lemon, and olives. Klaus, ever the adventurous one, tried the Moroccan Lamb Tajin. We also shared a Moroccan salad, which was fresh and flavorful. The warm atmosphere and delicious food made it a perfect midday treat.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we ventured into El Mellah, the old Jewish quarter of Chefchaouen. This historic neighborhood, once home to a thriving Jewish community, tells a story of cultural convergence and religious tolerance. As we walked through the narrow streets, I couldn't help but reflect on the layers of history embedded in these blue walls.

The Mellah is considered an institution with residential, economic and social functions and has always been an integral part of the ancient medinas. The Jewish families who lived here were known for their craftsmanship, particularly in jewelry making, sewing, and fabric trading. Though most of the Jewish population has since emigrated, their legacy remains in the architecture and the stories whispered through the alleyways. I learned that the Mellah contributed to the urban expansion of the city, generating social and economic development and making the city a reference in terms of urban planning, convergence, cultural mixing and respect for religious and ethnic differences.

Our final stop for the day was the Full Moon shop, a place recommended by several locals for its unique selection of souvenirs. I was on the hunt for a special memento to remind me of Chefchaouen, something beyond the typical tourist trinkets. The shop was a treasure trove of handcrafted items: woven blankets, leather goods, and locally made soaps and oils. I finally settled on a beautiful hand-painted bowl, its intricate design capturing the essence of the Blue Pearl.

As the sun began to set, casting a warm glow over the blue city, we made our way to MIDO'S for our farewell dinner. While it might be known as a fast-food spot, I was intrigued by its blend of Moroccan flavors with quick service. We indulged in some tasty sandwiches and flavorful fries, a casual end to our culinary journey in Chefchaouen.

Tomorrow, we bid adieu to this enchanting town. It's hard to believe our Moroccan adventure is coming to an end. While I'm eager to return to Heidelberg and share my stories with my librarian colleagues, a part of me will forever remain in the blue-washed streets of Chefchaouen. This trip has been more than just a vacation; it's been an immersion into a culture rich in history, beauty, and warmth. I am already looking forward to planning our next adventure, perhaps somewhere with even more hiking! Until then, I'll cherish the memories made in this magical place.

I'm so grateful to have shared this experience with my friends. Their laughter and companionship have made this trip truly unforgettable. As we prepare to leave, I know that the bonds we've strengthened here will last a lifetime.

Chefchaouen, you've captured my heart with your charm and tranquility. Thank you for the memories!
